Abstract: Larry Scott was a professor of Scandinavian Studies at Augustana College in Rock Island, Illinois from 1981-2013. He earned his Ph.D. in Scandinavian languages and literature at the University of Washington in 1973. Dr. Scott led the Augustana Summer School in Sweden (ASSIS) program as well as Augustana s annual Sankta Lucia celebration. Most of these files relate to Dr. Scott s teaching and extracurricular activities while associated with the Scandinavian Studies department at Augustana College in Rock Island, Illinois.

Administrative/Biographical History: CONTENT AND STRUCTURE Larry Lars Emil Scott was a professor of Scandinavian Studies at Augustana College in Rock Island, Illinois from 1981-2013. Larry Scott was born July 3, 1947 in Oak Park, Illinois to William W. and Hilda Melin Scott. He earned his Ph.D. in Scandinavian languages and literature at the University of Washington in 1973, where he had completed his undergraduate and master s degrees. He joined the faculty at Augustana College in 1981, and retired as professor of Scandinavian Studies in 2013. While at Augustana, Dr. Scott built up the college s Scandinavian program, the oldest such program in North America. He led many international study programs, including the Augustana Summer School in Sweden (ASSIS) in partnership with the folkhögskola in Grebbestad, and Vienna term. He led Augustana s annual Sankta Lucia celebration and advised the Scandinavian Club. He was a member of the Society for the Advancement of Scandinavian Study, the Modern Language Association, the American Scandinavian Association, the Swedish-American Historical Society, and Phi Beta Kappa. He was a past president of the Augustana Historical Society. His 1990 book, The Swedish Texans, is considered the definitive study of Swedish immigrants in Texas. In 1996, Dr. Scott was made a Knight in the Order of the Polar Star (Riddare av Nordstjärneorden) by King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden. He had earlier been awarded the King Carl XVI Gustaf Royal Gold Medal while teaching at the University of Texas. Dr. Scott passed away on November 16, 2013. He is remembered for his humor, wit, and teaching prowess. Scope and Content: Most of these files relate to Dr. Scott s teaching and extracurricular activities while associated with the Scandinavian Studies department at Augustana College in Rock Island, Illinois. Some of these files Dr. Scott inherited when joining the Scandinavian Studies department in 1981. The bulk of the files are related to the Augustana Summer School in Sweden, Sankta Lucia program, Augustana Swedish Institute, slides of Swedish art, and two of Dr. Scott s manuscripts.
