The Pan American Round Tables of Texas McAllen, Texas USA Message From Director Sarah Jane Wise 2013 Spring Edition Volume 37 no. 3 The Past two years have flown! Your enthusiasm and dedication to our founder Florence Terry Griswold s vision was and is infectious. As I traveled to each Table I saw her vision come alive as you welcomed new members, gave roll call reports on OAS countries, gave informative programs, informed your communities about PART activities, interacted with community projects, developed web sites and awarded scholarships. This list is not complete, however; to learn more about your sister Tables, I encourage you to attend the 56 th Biennial Pan American Round Tables of Texas Convention to be held in Eagle Pass, March 21-24 th. I wish to thank my Board, Advisory Board, Table Directors and all PARTT members for your dedication and hard work that continues to make PARTT what it is today. I look forward to seeing you in Eagle Pass in March where Yee Haw meets Ole. One for All and All for One. Registration fees of $200 are due before February 25 and you are reminded to call in to reserve your room at one of the conference hotels. Everyone is sure to have a great time visiting with dear friends, getting acquainted with this unique border city and taking a must trip to the local casino.

2012 Alliance Convention Update Page 2 Zone I members presented The Great American Past Time skit at the Alliance Convention in Buenos Aires, Argentina. The group sang :Take Me Out To The Ballgame, while miming the sport and throwing out popcorn, candy and crackerjacks to the audience. First of all, I would like to thank the members of the Texas Pan American Round Tables for their support and involvement in my being elected as your Director General for the biennium 2012-2014. I pledge to fulfill my responsibilities to you and our organization with dedication, commitment and enthusiasm. I firmly believe that by working as a team we can achieve all our goals. The theme for these next two years is Connecting the Women of the Americas through Education. Our mission is to initiate, communicate, educate, facilitate and participate at the ground level at each of our Tables and their membership. Connecting the women of the Americas through education enables us to see the future with optimism and remember that accomplishments automatically result in change. Change is the law of life and those who look only to the past or the present are certain to miss the future! Our movement has gone through many changes and we have Survived. The meeting of minds and hearts from all the Americas is an enriching experience which we are privileged to share. Share your knowledge. Reach out beyond yourselves and gain understanding until, we are: One for All, All for One Una Paraa Todas, Todas Para Una Elsie Perez Dr. Gladys Carreaga de Valda was named Pan American Woman of the Year at the Alliance Convention in Buenos Aires in October. She has been a member of the Sucre, Bolivia Pan American Round Table for 43 years and has held many positions, including that of Table Director during four different terms. She has also served on the local, national and alliance levels in many capacities. Mrs. Carreaga de Valda has also been responsible for the formation of many tables and youth groups in Bolivia. She served as a medical surgeon in her profession, with specialty in Oncology and Radiation Therapy.

Wearing vintage outfits and hats reminiscent of days gone by, guests and members of the Brownsville I Table celebrated their 80th anniversary at La Cantera in early November. Rio Grande City/Roma & McAllen Table representatives joined in the activities, along with honorary guests: State Director Sarah Jane Wise, New Alliance Director General Elsie Perez, Area C Director & Alliance Corresponding Secretary Margo Arevalo Gonzalez, and Alliance Parliamentarian Carmen Guerra. A delicious dinner was served on tables elegantly decorated in pink. Obituaries Page 4 Antonia "Toni" Becker Toni Becker passed away on June 26, 2011at the age of 91. Mrs. Becker was a founding member of the Pan American Round Table of Eagle Pass. The Eagle Pass Table is very proud that she was one of sixteen local ladies who held the first meeting in Eagle Pass in 1953. Toni was also very proud of the fact that Mrs. F.T. Griswold was a native of Eagle Pass and was raised there, as she was. Toni was an active member of P.A.R.T. until the time of her death. She was always eager to guide in observing protocol and was very knowledgeable about the Constitution and By- Laws, as well as the history of Pan American Round Table. Toni is survived by her daughter, Table member Gricelda Becker-Pérez and her family. Toni was loved and respected and will be greatly missed. Estela G. Chapa Austin Table member Estela G. Chapa, 84 passed away on Monday, October 1, 2012. Estela joined the Rio Grande City/Roma Table in 1959. In 1967 she and her family moved to Austin where she joined the Austin Table. Throughout her life she was very active in the community and in the Pan American Round Table. Estela started teaching in her hometown before the family moved to Austin in 1967. She continued her teaching career in the Austin ISD and retired after 33 wonderful years in the profession. She was also a volunteer with the Fiesta de Independencia Foundation (which awards college scholarships to Hispanic youth) and the Catholic Daughters organization. Odessa Table Celebrates 35th Birthday Insert Page 5 Sixteen members were present at the recent celebration of the Odessa Table in honor of their 35th anniversary. The party was held at the home of Margaret Carpenter, where she and Jeanene Taylor served as hostesses. The program was given by Jeanene Taylor, who presented the history of the Table. Members attending, left to right, are: Yollie Wilkins, Margaret Carpenter, Betty Dale, Eddie Spence, Knoxine Clack, Nancy Minor, Sonya Haynie, Jeanene Taylor, Joy Cowan, Sheilagh Bassett, Earlene Smith, Barbara Graff, Gladys Simpson, Helen Grewell, June Boutin and Edith Libson-Hardy, Photographer. Margaret Carpenter displays her beautiful table setting at their anniversary party Jeanene Taylor and Margaret Carpenter served as hostesses for the Odessa Table s celebration. The annual Mother/Daughter Christmas luncheon was held on December 4th at the McAllen Country Club. UTPA Vice President Veronica Gonzales, reported on the great advances being made at UTPA and Josie Cappadona, UTPA Development Committee member, inspired the group to offer greater support for the university. Several members from the Brownsville I Table were also present. Entertainment was provided by the Milam Elementary School of McAllen, with appropriate Christmas Carols. Insert Page 6 McAllen Installs New Members The McAllen Table is proud to present four new members. They are, l-r: Nancy Cosby, Dr. Farzaneh Razzaghi and Mariella Gorena, who were installed in June. Carola Chapa was inducted in November. Laredo Table Director, Ana Flores welcomes Director General Elsie Pérez and Corresponding Secretary Margo A. Gonzalez to their regular meeting of Nov. 14th, as one of their first official visits as elected Alliance officials for 2012-2014. Letter from the Editor: Having served as State Publications Chairman during the past biennium has been a real privilege. The task served me as a creative & learning experience and also provided me with the opportunity to get acquainted with many of my Pan American sisters throughout the State. Thanks to all for being so cooperative in submitting material in a timely manner. Your submissions display great enthusiasm in pursuit of our PART objectives. Thanks, also, to State Director Sarah Jane Wise for her suggestion to increase the number of pages in the newsletter in digital format. This great idea has provided the means whereby all photos and information submitted by the Tables can be included, yet allows us to stay within the budget. My best wishes to our new and upcoming Publications Chairman and A big congratulations to our beloved Elsie Pérez in her new role as Alliance Director General! El Paso On the Move! Marilyn Maloney, Ann Brown & Sally Broaduss Director Ellen Speights chose the theme for the year to be The Year of the Arts for the El Paso Table. The theme chosen for the first meeting, held on October 16th, was El Paso Opera and Opera Antics, highlighting several performers from the El Paso Opera. Eleven new members were introduced. L-R. Rod Chavez, director of the Conroe ISD s Anti-Dropout Program, shares ideas for inspiring children to stay in school during November 13 meeting. Liz Rubio was chosen from 16 applicants to receive the Conroe Table s 2012-13 scholarship. Rubio, mother of two, a full-time court coordinator and a pre-law student, attended the January 8, 2013, meeting to express her appreciation.
