Overview of Greave s Collection Digitize, index, catalog and create public access to more than 100 oral history recordings. The recordings from the late-1980s and early-1990s all relate to post-war Seattle history and cover a diverse array of topics -- transportation, race relations, housing, city planning and labor -- narrated by an equally diverse group.

Interviews This project covers decades of work, started by Greaves in 1987. The recordings were intended to inform a book he was researching. His unexpected and untimely death in 2009 at the age of 57 stalled the project. Gary Greaves. Courtesy of Frances McCue.

Challenge Recordings are not Oral Histories, per se. Greaves did not follow best practices for recording interviews (no date/time/names noted on the recordings). Have to trust Gary s handwritten notes that are often crossed out and confusing. Hazel Wolf. Activist and environmentalist who live in the Seattle area most of her live. Died in 2000 at age 101. Digitization and Indexing Converted more than 100 cassettes to WAV files. Sony tape deck. Software = Logic Pro A/D Converter = Apogee Duet Converted to 24 bit/48khz. WAV files archived by UW. Ripped to MP3 for public access.

Repurposing Recordings Interviews were initially intended to inform a book. We had to contact narrators or their heirs to get permission to post them on line. Brewster Denny. Descendent of Arthur Denny, who was leader of the Denny party and credited with founding Seattle in 1851. Passed last year at age 88. From: HistoryLink
