Mon. 10 am 6 pm, Ünal, Neukölln, 2009, from the series: beyond, 2008 2010, (*1972) takes chances and the time for discoveries. Exploration and women artists are both high on the Berlinische Galerie s agenda. Ulrich Domröse, Head of Department Photography, has been engaged in a dialogue with Nemes for some time. Berlin s museum of modern art, photography and architecture already has 23 works by the German art photographer with Romanian roots. Her first major personal show in an art museum also fulfils an important wish for Nemes. After she moved to Berlin from Aachen in 2001, she first visited the Berlinische Galerie in 2004 and she knew at once: I want to exhibit here. Initially studied mathematics and German. Then in Berlin she opted for a radical new departure: a career as an independent photographer. Cartier-Bresson, Friedlander, Sugimoto and Frauke Eigen were important inspirations for the autodidact. By now there have been numerous gallery exhibitions and publications on Nemes, whose works are already found in a variety of collections: the Folkwang Museum in Essen, the Deutsches Historisches Museum, the Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe in Hamburg, the DZ Bank Kunstsammlung in Frankfurt and the Cleveland Clinic Art Collection. On display are six photocycles from the last ten years of Nemes s output. Three were only finished recently, and these will premiere at the Berlinische Galerie: beyond (2008-10, male Turkish and Arab domains in Berlin), Blossom Time (2012, portrait experiment with young people), The Presentation (2014, Carnival, masks, models) and the premieres: Greed (2014 17, tangled flying bodies), 23197 (2017 18, permutations of fear), Ocna: Closer Scrutiny (2017 18, morbidly sensual body fragments). The exhibition contains about 120 photographic and lyrical works. It centres on human portraits, the poetry and surrealism of everyday life. has focussed for a long time on social themes like identity and personality, which are highly political today. Drawing on the techniques of colour and black-and-white photography, focus and and abstraction, her pictures often reflect her viewers insecurities, lack of knowledge and fears. 1

Nemes s advantage and driving force is her experience of three different cultural backgrounds: Romania, her country of birth, Iran, where she spent a period of her childhood, and Germany. Every new beginning in life intensifies our sensitivity, openness and curiosity. Wherever her artistic work appears, it leaves traces. Like an encounter, photography contains magical, indescribable, unique elements. What is certain is our visual memory, which feeds into so many things. Both in creation and in contemplation, we draw on this pool of images, sorting, varying and, if possible, making something new. But how that happens is best left unsaid, because words cannot do justice to this seeking and finding on so many levels. () Exhibition catalogue: 128 pages, German and English, approx. 70 illustrations, ISBN 978-3-96070-018-0, 24,80. . Greed Fear Love. Photographs 2008 2018 EXHIBITION TEXTS Introduction made her name primarily with portrait photography. Ever since her first series Behind the Curtain (2001), the Berlin-based artist has focused on themes around identity, individuals and their vulnerabilities. At the same time, these works were an opportunity to test photographic techniques that could aptly express a pictorial idea. In 2014, in the series Greed, her visual idiom began changing in unexpected ways, and she has repeatedly turned to abstract forms. Most recently, in 23197 and Ocna: Closer Scrutiny, she also embraced colour photography. Visualising the threat The flickering horizontal layers of colour in the series 23197 (2017 2018), which at first glance evoke paintings by the American artist Mark Rothko, are trucks shot out of focus and head on. With the aid of this abstract device, the photographer imagines that traumatic moment when a person faces a life-threatening danger. In the instant of fear, the nerve cells react and trigger a range of sudden, unconscious reflexes. wrote her own texts to accompany the photographs, verbally capturing individual and social dimensions of the threat. On perceiving the other The sequence beyond (2008 2010) is about the seemingly mysterious male world of Turkish and Arab cafés and culture clubs in the Berlin districts of Kreuzberg, Neukölln and Wedding. Initially, only took pictures of the exteriors with their falling curtains and impervious doors. In a second phase, she portrayed the men through the windows. The seemingly strange conditions in which these pictures were taken understandably resulted in sketchy images, and actual identities are inevitably left unclear. If the aesthetic impact of these blurred portraits can sometimes be provocative, this says less about the sitters themselves than about widespread projections and fears. The body as fragment At first the photographs in the series Ocna: Closer Scrutiny (2017 18) merely reveal an assortment of male body parts floating like driftwood on the glassy, almost black surface of the water. Evidently these fragments all belong to the same body. Although the owner is a person familiar to the photographer, she has visually dissected this body with detached curiosity and precision, investigating its peculiarities and traces of experience. In contrast to the rather sober stock-taking, the poetic texts written as an accompanyment express a great intimacy with the person depicted. Unbridled greed The series Greed (2014 17) is about unbridled appetite, a desire both humans and animals can feel. Through these entangled bodies of seagulls, describes an affective outburst of creaturely energy as an archaic, affirmative life force. The formations are symbolic and bizarre, sometimes resembling abstract or graphic ciphers. 5

Role and identity: on the margins of a Rhenish carnival The Performance (2014) is a group of pictures taken during Carnival in the Rhineland. The artist asked costumed revellers to step out of the hurly-burly of processions, pubs and taverns so that she could photograph them against a neutral background. For a moment, the sitters were thrown back upon themselves, creating an exceptional situation. Only now they had donned their fancy dress and slipped into a chosen role, playing with wishful thinking, unfulfilled ambitions and inverted social models. This difference between illusion and everyday life is likewise a metaphor for the promise that photography seems to make about depicting authentic reality and managing to capture and convey the essence of an individual. Images of adolescence In her series Blossom Time (2012) addressed the stressful process of growing up and the radical changes it entails. At this time, with its insecurities and soul-searching, social life is crucially geared to friendships, so group portraits seemed to offer a fitting subject. As she was unable to maintain an even tension throughout the group, she photographed everyone separately and then merged the pictures into a tableau. This accounts for the uncommon intensity emanating from these portraits. The images tell us not only something about feelings and forging an identity, but above all about sticking together and the emotional relations between these young people. 6

. Greed Fear Love. Photographs 2008 2018 Art depends on good friends: The friends of the Berlinische Galerie helped to finance the exhibition The Förderverein der Berlinischen Galerie e.v. is an association of friends of the museum. It made an important contribution to financing the major solo show for photographer Loredana Nemes by donating 60,000. We are delighted to play a key part in supporting this exciting and highly topical exhibition. We have set ourselves the aim of using association funds to facilitate at least one special exhibition a year. We are looking to recruit a lot of new friends for the museum so that we can continue our work and build on this commitment, says Jens-Rainer Jänig, who chairs the Förderverein. As the museum has no exhibition budget of its own, the help of our friends is vital to implementing the multi-faceted programme we offer, adds Thomas Köhler, director of the Berlinische Galerie. We want both to strengthen civic commitment through the association as a patron of the arts and to inspire new friends to support art and our museum. Apart from corporate members and benefactors, we are keen to reach out to a younger generation of supporters. Age and income don t matter. Young art lovers can show commitment in their own ways. We have an excellent example: Jung und Artig the young friends of the Berlinische Galerie. For a membership fee of 30 a year, people under 30 can join one of the biggest existing networks of dedicated friends of the arts. To thank them for their support, we invite them to special events and occasions, and they can also take part in the regular programme of events organised by our association. (Jens-Rainer Jänig) Happy birthday, Jung und Artig! The young friends are celebrating their 10th anniversary this year. There will be a chance for a congratulatory drink on 5 July between 6 and 10 pm at the Art After Work event with. After an Artist Talk with the photographer and the exhibition curator Ulrich Domröse, we will get together on our museum terrace for a sundowner with music. Online tickets at: www.berlinischegalerie/onlinetickets Benefits for friends For over 40 years now, the Förderverein Berlinische Galerie e.v. has been helping the city s public art museum to fund exhibition projects and publications. Friends enjoy special insights, sharing memorable experiences with artists and curators. Members are invited to openings, exclusive previews, guided tours with curators, studio visits, art holidays and day excursions. Every year they can also purchase a catalogue at the reduced price of just 10. This year s bargain offer for friends is the exhibition catalogue Greed Fear Love. Tour and brunch with At 10.30 am on 19 August, the friends of the museum will host a guided tour with Loredana Nemes and the exhibition s curator Ulrich Domröse. A good opportunity to meet the photographer in person and find out more about her show Greed Fear Love. Afterwards there will be a chance to exchange impressions while brunching together in Café Dix.
