With this experience, I believe we should: 1. Fully engage the community Thanks to our past presidents, the HKIA enhances public appreciation of architecture, heritage, culture and art, and ensures effective communication among stakeholders. However, all of us and not just an active core group must wield our influence appropriately to the ultimate benefit of the community. 2. Substantially review professional development I believe that: professional examination fees are too high HKIA should not keep a big reserve there is virtually no local experience jobs for our candidates. Our examinations should be overhauled accordingly. We currently discourage niche designers and creative talents while design excellence is Hong Kong architects only sustainable advantage. Our Buildings Ordinance is outdated. I advocate design orientation as one key aspect of architectural practice and development of exportable skills. 3. Facilitate members practices Local architectural firms are squeezed not only by the proliferation of international firms but also by HKIA regulations that unfairly tip the balance in these firms favor. Hong Kong firms can reap little benefit unless international firms are mandated to enter into genuine partnerships with them. I also urge for the expeditious facilitation of local architectural firms to open in Mainland China, following CEPA and the mutual recognition of professional qualifications. The difficulties our profession faces have not been sufficiently addressed. We must take proactive steps to resolve them.

Practicum Associate Professor, School of Architecture, University of Hawaii, Manoa (from 2004) Candidate s Personal Statement The Hong Kong lnstitute of Architects has achieved a lot for its Members in the past 50 years and I believe that together with the Council and the six Boards, I can serve our Members well as president for the next term. In steering the course, I will always refer to the Objects of HKIA in our Ordinance and to ensure that the Council and the Boards will all work closely towards our objectives. I would like to promote what we are passionate about which is excellence in Architecture; improvement in our built environment for a healthy and sustainable livelihood both in Hong Kong as well as Internationally where many of our members are working beyond the boundaries of Hong Kong. To do this well, we must gain Knowledge through broad education for it is Knowledge as well as Passion that drive Design. Knowledge is best gained through articulating CPD Programmes and related events in a structured, thematic approach.
The key themes I would ask the Council and the Boards to concentrate on include : - Professional practice - Integrity & honesty - Procurement of projects - Quality design & innovation - Sustainable development - Advocacy - Community - HKIA s Value (resources for all the above) There is a lot to do and I encourage all members especially young members to join one of the six Boards and Committees of their choice to contribute and be part of a team to create a great lnstitute for all members.
