HOWARD H. MACKEY SR. PAPERS Collection 172-1 to 172-17 Prepared by: Helen Rutt January 1995

Scope Note The papers of Howard H. Mackey Sr. (1901-1987), architect and educator, span the period from 1925 to 1975, and measure approximately six linear feet. This collection documents Mackey's careers, both as a practicing architect and an architectural educator. In 1975 Mackey donated the papers to Moorland-Spingarn. In 1924 Mackey joined the Architecture faculty at Howard University. Between 1930 and 1971 he also served as department head. In 1950, under Mackey's leadership, the department became the first predominantly black school of architecture to be accredited. Twenty years later, the department separated from the School of Engineering & Architecture, and became the School of Architecture and Planning. Reports, articles, and correspondence throughout the collection document the growth of architectural education at Howard. Between 1954 and 1957 Mackey took a leave of absence to serve as an adviser to the governments of British Guiana and Surinam. While abroad, Mackey participated in the Aided-Self-Help Housing Program, teaching teams of local draftsmen architectural and planning techniques. The teams developed drawings for more than 4000 housing units. Mackey also served on the preparatory committee for the 1956 Conference on Town & Country Development Planning in Trinidad. Both these efforts are well-documented. In addition to providing public service, Mackey built his

3 private architecture practice. He designed numerous homes, as well as churches and other public buildings. Mackey also oversaw Howard University's building expansion program of the early 1960s. The collection includes photographs and files documenting Mackey's works.
