Prof Christopher K Y Leung Head of Department of Civil & Envivonmental Engineering The Hong Kong Unversity of Science and Technology I n the past 20 years, under the leadership of our former Heads, Prof C.K. Shen, Prof Wilson Tang and Prof Moe Cheung, the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at HKUST has developed into one of the best in the region. Our faculty members have received numerous teaching and research awards, taken up highly visible positions in international professional associations and learner s societies, served as editors/associate editors of top journals, delivered keynote lectures at major international conferences and actively involved in technology transfer activities. Many of our alumni have excelled in their career in both the industry and the academics. Some have been promoted to directors or senior associates of companies, while others have become university professors or directors of research institutions. Our students have received awards from professional organizations, winning international competitions, organized activities to promote civil and environmental engineering, and participating in voluntary work such The next decade will present us with new challenges and opportunities. With the transition to 4-year undergraduate curriculum and implementation of outcome-based education, the Department is working very hard to develop a new curriculum and courses that are more inspiring and providing better training in both engineering and general skills. Already proven as top researchers in their own fields, faculty members are now collaborating on challenging problems involving multi-disciplinary expertise. Our growing alumni body is an invaluable asset of the Department, and we will endeavour to strengthen the cohesion. In addition, with our alumni becoming increasingly prominent in the profession, I am hoping that they can serve as our liaison to the industry. By bringing our attention to industrial challenges which often require innovative solutions, they can facilitate the transfer of university research to professional practice. With all of us working together and striving for continued excellence, I am sure the Department will go from strength to strength in the years to come. as the construction of bridges for backward villages in China. 6
