HENRY S WOODS GENERAL DESCRIPTION Up until the 18th Century the village of Garnant was originally part of the Amman Valley with just a few farms and rough mountain roads. The first mine was worked in circa 1760 and small coal workings proliferated in the first half of the 19th Century. The arrival of the railways accelerated this and circa 1840 a station at Garnant secured the town s own identity. After the closure of the mines the area reverted to dairy and beef farming and this woodland has been created through the conversion of farmland to forestry. This wood benefits from income under both the Glastir Maintenance Grant and Woodland Creation Premium as well as being eligible for the government Basic Payment Scheme (BPS). Both of these lots will allow the prospective purchasers to develop a woodland that will produce an attractive amenity environment, opportunities for more commercially focused management and a developing haven for animals, invertebrates and insects. This area has been identified as a habitat for red kites, skylarks and lapwings. LOT 1: BRYNCETHEN WOOD 6.87 hectares / 16.98 acres Accessed directly from Bryncethen Road via a gateway on its north-west boundary, this wood has a large wide grassy ride winding towards the eastern boundary. A small block building sits to the south of this track and despite being unused for several years still benefits from intact walls and a roof. The crops within the wood were established in 2016 and comprise a mix of alder, oak, sycamore and birch. These crops have established successfully with the pioneer species (alder and birch) progressing well. With a pleasant lack of footpaths or public access, this wood sustains an easily accessible location with a definite feeling of privacy and solitude. The design of the planting scheme is such that given another two or three growing seasons the faster establishing crops will break up the lines of the site across the wood and the paths will become more enclosed. This will develop into an attractive woodland and provide opportunities to engage with the management and practise silvicultural skills. Rights of Way Access is taken directly from the public highway, point A on the sale plan. The wood is sold subject to a right of way in favour of Lot 2 over the route shown AB. OFFERS AROUND 54,000 ARE INVITED FOR LOT 1 LOT 2: CWMGORS WOOD 14.12 hectares / 34.90 acres Access to this second larger lot is from the east via a public footpath from Gwaun-Cae-Gurwen. The path is made up and easily walked providing access into the southern compartments of Cwmgors Wood, point C on the sale plan. The history of this land is clearly visible with several smaller fields and their historic boundaries easily identified on the ground. These provide pleasant individual blocks of woodland with mature hedges and tree lined boundaries. The larger blocks of woodland provide wide ranging views to the east and north whilst not being overlooked themselves. This secluded feel adds a sense of tranquillity to this urban bordered woodland. The planting once again consists of a mix of alder, birch, oak and sycamore and given their recent establishment in 2016 these are performing reasonably. The alder is in some cases approaching 6 feet in height and combined with other more mature trees provides interesting small copse areas. These are excellent opportunities to be engaged with the progress of this wood both through day-to-day management and long term planning with even some potential to harvest firewood (subject to felling licence). Rights of Way Access may be taken from the east at the point marked C on the sale plan via a public footpath. The current owner has taken vehicular access across Lot 1 on the route AB and over the dismantled tramway.
