Notable artists including Nirvana, Fleetwood Mac, Neil Young and others recorded albums at this location. The period of significance begins in 1969 when Sound City was established and ends in 2011, when the studio ceased open commercial operations and its famous soundboard was sold. The building was designed to resemble a French farmhouse in an attempt to recreate some of the atmosphere experienced by American soldiers during World War I. The building is located on the Van Nuys Airport property and retains objects that highlight its military theme.
