50 IIID INITIATIVES CHAPTER NEWS DELHI Yarns Unravelled IIID DRC s event focussed on textiles ranging from acting to the design of handicrafts, textiles and children s books, used, the idea of textile as a metaphor, which she explored using her magnificent collection of slides. In a poetic rendition, she illustrated the subtle, supple and ephemeral quality of textiles, starting, with clothing, protecting the body, to tents sheltering the same body. Cloth and fabric become textile when they absorb and extend meaning from experiencing life; surroundings becoming memory and recall. They are movable and impermanent, as they are not built forms. History tells us that we could find artifacts of terracotta, metal or stone in Mohenjo- Daro but only textile, could be surmised from the patterns engraved on the artifacts. She concluded her talk with a short excerpt from a Balinese film Opera Jawa, a requiem, based on the abduction of Sita, from the Ramayana, leaving the audiences enthralled, with the recall of continuous red flowing fabric! 1. Mr. Rajeev Lochan MD Somfy receiving membership certificate 2. Managing committee members with speakers and MD of Somfy Textiles hold a special place in the world of interiors. History tells us about the varied use of fabrics as shelter, roof and door coverings and the flexibility they give to a space which they temporarily enclose. Yarns Unravelled, the event, focussed specifically on textiles, presented by the Institute of Indian Interior Designers, Delhi Regional Chapter, on Sunday, the 31st August, at India International Centre in New Delhi. The evening exposed the varied dimensions of fabrics to a packed audience, tracing its history and studying its meaning while understanding the need for its preservation and conservation. The first speaker, Amba Sanyal, whose interests spread over a vast canvas, Mayank Mansingh Kaul, a graduate of the National Institute of Design, design curator and writer, took the audience on a historical journey of textiles. He started his presentation with pictures, showing tents, used by nomads, and went on to show tents used for weddings, and eventually luxury hotels, that have made tents a fashion statement today. Tents were shown in a variety of forms, the expression of the interiors changing, from populist to classy, depending on their use. Mughal paintings brought alive, the beautiful tents and fabric coverings of courtyards, at Fathepur Sikri and the Diwani Khas. Moving to modern India, a black and white photograph of the residence of interior designer, Shona Ray, from the 1970s, showed the beginnings of cultural revival in design. Shona was among the first few designers, along with contemporaries like Riten Majumdar and

Ratna Fabri who brought back the vogue of using Indian handcraft in urban interiors, at a time, when references to such design were mainly European. Mayank finished his presentation with slides that showcased his textile designs at the Lebua Devi Ratn Resorts at Jaipur and BageechaBistra for Wrap Designs. Passing the knowledge of textiles from one generation to another, still exists in our society. The work of darners is a living tradition. While darning as a skill, is intended to be invisible on cloth, it is for the darners themselves to determine, if their skills should also remain anonymous, the words of the third speaker, Priya Ravish Mehra, who has been working on a project with rafoogars or darners, for the past 14 years. A Delhi based textile artist, weaver, researcher and designer, Priya s presentation started with showcasing the small town of Najibabad, the home of the rafoogars. Old shawls, darned with meticulous precision, made up of stitches, merging with the designs, showed how this dying craft actually preserved traditional skills. Memory and recall that Amba had beautifully expressed, at the start of the evening, were indeed meshed in these fabrics. Preserving old textiles holds an important place in the context of retrofitting of heritage buildings, thus emphasising, the relevance of the skill in interior architecture. This unique tradition of darning was well researched and brought to public eye by Priya. She also spoke about the workshops, held in Australia and Scotland, with rafoogars. At the venues, people belonging to the town, bring their grandmothers shawls and other old fabrics, to be mended. So strong is their association, with the past, that their happiness knows no bounds on knowing the shawls can be used again. Museums came forward with their frayed pieces and these were given a new lease of life. A poignant moment was the darning of a torn Eureka flag, restoring its place in the museum, and giving the whole town cause for celebration. Priya ended her talk with maps of Najibabad, works of art in embroidery, and patchwork designed by her and executed by the rafoogars. The Naksha served as symbolic cartography, inscribing the town and its people, including the rafoogars who were once essential to the town s prosperity, but now are a vulnerable sociological entity, like many other traditional artisan communities in India. The evening was supported by Somfy, the corporate members of IIID. They also gave a short presentation of their product range including automated blinds, rolling shutters, awnings, home automation, bollards, barriers and parking solutions. MD, Mr Rajeev Lochan, was presented the membership certificate by Ms Tanuja Kanvinde, Chairperson, IIID Delhi. The evening ended with cocktails and dinner, and members were able to successfully network and discuss the nuances of the presentations. INSITE NOVEMBER 2014 51
