Architecture + the 21 st Century Paradigm Shift (abridged) Ann Sussman, AIA geneticsofdesign.com
With biometrics, like eye-tracking, we can measure how: People ignore blank facades. How buildings make people feel + behave. How specific elements impact the overall design.

With biometrics, we can ask basic questions like: What are people built to look at?

Architecture + the 21 st Century Paradigm Shift Boston City Hall and Plaza fail to attract the public because the building and surrounding spaces don t provide the FIXATION POINTS in the first 3-5 seconds the brain needs to see (that s during pre-attentive processing, before the conscious brain can get into the act), to most easily regulate, feel at its best, and effortlessly move us forward. https://geneticsofdesign.com/2018/02/04/if-you-want-to-see-why-people-shun-boston-city-hall-eye-track-it/

Architecture + the 21 st Century Paradigm Shift What are people built to look at? People! Man is man's greatest joy. - 12 th century Icelandic poet
The 21 st Century Paradigm Shift: Our ancient brain architecture sets limits for our modern built architecture. It can t be any other way. Ever.
How did modern architecture happen? Why did buildings become so blank + Face-less?
Who were the fathers of Modern Architecture? 1926 1928-31 1919 Mies van der Rohe Walter Gropius Le Corbusier 1886-1969 1883-1969 1887-1965
The fathers of Modern Architecture had brain damage from years of service in WW1 German Army 1883-1969 c. 1938 Walter Gropius and Mies van der Rohe couldn t see the world normally; They had PTSD, brain damage from war. It left them unable to take in or respond to visual stimuli neuro-typically.
What about Le Corbusier?
Le Corbusier was autistic (ASD).* Face-avoidant. Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a lifelong neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by restricted repetitive behaviors and impaired communication and social interactions (American Psychiatric Association, 2013). * Anthony Daniels, MD Michael Fitzgerald, MD Mohammed Arshad, MD Nicholas Fox Weber (2008) A strong systems-thinker
How did modern architecture happen?..relationally-compromised people with atypical fixations and emotional regulation came up with the architectural approach, abetted by a wounded world rushing to bury the past and an economic power structure all-too-willing to profit from it. http://commonedge.org/the-mental-disorders-that-gave-us-modern-architecture/ Ann Sussman w Katie Chen, Martin Pedersen, editor
CONCLUSION How does The 21st Century Paradigm Shift reframe Architecture?
CONCLUSION from the New Age of Biology The broader one's understanding of the human experience, the better design we will have.. - Steve Jobs
Architecture + the 21 st Century Paradigm Shift CONCLUSION With biometrics, we see evolution at work, reframing the history of modern architecture + our understanding of how buildings impact us. We learn how we see the world like an animal because we are one- and how we re built to regulate by seeing faces Our evolutionary history directs & sets limits for our experience of architecture. Natura non facit saltus - Charles Darwin
