March 14-20, 2015 Page 3 BE student loses belongings in fire, appeals for help By Our Staff Reporter M. Rajeswari, a final year BE student, whose textbooks, study materials and other belongings were destroyed in a fire in her house, has appealed for help. She said that her parents income is just enough to meet the day-today expenses and they cannot afford to buy her new books. My father is a worker in a printing press and my mother is a sweeper in a private hospital, she said Two thatched houses sharing a compound wall in the terrace of a building in Pudhu Street (Kodambakkam) were gutted in a fire early on the morning of March 12. The fire was caused by a spark in a stove which lit the dried fronds in the roof and then quickly spread, engulfing the whole roof. The occupants raced out and with the help of neighbours tried to put out the fire by pouring water. Meanwhile, a LPG cylinder kept inside one of the houses exploded, adding to the fire. Personnel from T. Nagar and Ashok Nagar Fire & Rescue Stations, who rushed to the spot, put out the fire after an hour s battle. The fire and the blast destroyed the entire belongings of the residents of both the houses. Rajeswari said that the family has so far received Rs. 5000 from the Corporation fund and S. Preethi (Founder, Sri Sri Shiridi Sai Baba Trust, Kodambakkam) donated Rs. 5000 to buy vessels and other essentials. Those who are interested in helping Rajeswari may contact her at 99441 05046. Page 4 March 14-20, 2015 TAMIL CINEMA 75 - A LOOK BACK By RANDOR GUY G. RAMANATHAN - 27 One of the big hits of G. Ramanathan, the Tamil movie music maestro, inthe late1950s was Chakravarthi Thirumagal (1957) in which many of his compositions became hits, some of them still being remembered after more than half a century - the hallmark of success, popularityand intrinsic value in movie music. Interestingly, the Indian movie icon and multitalented starm. G. Ramachandran was just making his way to reach the top and become a cult figure of recent Indian history. In one single year1957, he acted in as many as four movies - Chakravarthi Thirumagal, Mahadevi, Raja Rajan and Pudumaipithan. Chakravarthi Thirumagal was directed by Pa. Neelakantan who soon became close to MGR and directed him in more than 17 films with many of them becoming hits. Written by the first star writer of Tamil cinema, Elangovan, based on a story by the forgotten screenwriter P. A. Kumar, this film had Anjali Devi as the female lead, supported by S. Varalakshmi, P. S. Veerappa, N. S. Krishnan, T. A. Mathuram, K. A. Thangavelu, T. P. Muthulakshmi, Lakshmi Prabha and veteran character actor E. R. Sahadevan. G. Ramanathan s tune-rich music was well supported by the lyrics of a galaxy of poets - Thanjai Ramaiah Das, Pattukottai Kalyanasundaram, K. D. Santhanam, Subramania Bharathiyar, Ku. Sa. Krishnamurthy, Ku. Ma. Balasubramaniam, and Clown Sundaram. The film had intimate scenes between MGR and Anjali Devi, which thrilled the moviegoers of the day. A folklore about kings, queens and princesses, the film was produced by RM. Ramanathan Chettiar, one of the investors in the then active Newtone Studio, in Kilpauk. Madras. Promoted by the well-known art director-filmmaker F. Nagoorand supported by his professional colleagues, noted audiographer Dinshaw K.Tehraniand cinematographer Jiten Bannerjee, this studio was financially supported by the superstar and legend of Tamil Cinema, M. K. Thyagaraja Bhagavathar. Ramanathan Chettiar, a close friend of MKT, was one of the financiers. A rich Naattukottai Nagarathhar from Chettinad, he was interested in sound recording and sat at the sound mixer, recording the sound and mixing the tracks. In some movies, his name was credited as the audiographer. Besides, he produced movies like this one under his banner Uma Pictures. In this movie, a king arranges three competitions for young men seeking the hand of his lovely princess (Anjali Devi) and a prince (MGR)wins the competitions and weds her. Earlier, the princess and her companion (Varalakshmi) go horse ridingand, by sheer chance, they happen to meet the hero. The princess, who does not reveal her identity, falls for him, and so does her friend. The friend is ambitious and plays many evil games to get her dream man. However, her designs are exposed and after many interesting events, the couple are united in happy wedded bliss. The film had as many as 12 songs, some of which became popular. A song and dance sequence Aadavaanga annaathey asanji nikiira annaathey, ange ingeyy paakirathey ennaathey! sung off-screen by Sirkazhi Govindarajan, Jikki and P. Leela became popular. It had words like gummaalu and the song became a hit. MGR danced well and did some stunts while the villain (Veerappa) tried to trap him during the song and dance sequence. E.V. Saroja, slim and shapely, and G. Sakunthala, buxom and attractive, were the dancers and Saroja s movements were excellent. One song by S. Varalakshmi expressing her disappointment over her failure in love for the hero (MGR), Emmatram thanaa en vazhviley in the rare classical Carnatic raga Kurinji, too became a big hit. Sohanlal and Thangaraj choreographed the dances by E. V. Saroja and G. Sakunthala. The cinematography was by noted lensman V. Ramamurthi. One of his assistants was Karnan who later rose to become a successful cinematographer and producerdirector, making curry westerns featuring Jai Shankar such as Ganga and Jambu. One of the assistant directors credited as Mohan rose to become a successful filmmaker under the name Mohan Gandhi Raman. He was also active in the south Indian film workers movement and hailed from a family of Congress Party loyalists. The film was successful at the box-office. More hit movies for the music maestro were to follow. (To be continued) Single Teacher Schools (Silver Park Apartments, No.24, Thankachalam Road, T. LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Sir, What looks like an abandoned Tata Indica V2 car bearing registration number TN22/CX5648 is parked close to Kovai Pazhamudhir Nilayam (South West Boag Road, T. Nagar, near Madurai Veeran Koil) for more than a year. Stickers of a call taxi Abandoned cab blocks road margin company Friends Track are pasted on its windows. But according to the company s officials, the car is not registered with the company. It creates traffic jams during peak hours. I appeal to the traffic department to take suitable action to trace the owner and remove the vehicle from the spot. M.S. Vembu, South West Boag Road, T. Nagar Volunteers at risk during traffic awareness campaigns Sir, I am a 77-year-old retired pilot of Indian Air Force and a qualified and experienced flight safety officer and aircraft accident investigator. It has become common nowadays for private organisations, NGOs and schools to conduct traffic awareness campaigns at busy junctions in the city. Though such initiatives are welcome, volunteers need to take special care to ensure their safety. I am referring to the photo of Thozhan volunteers conducting such a campaign published in Mambalam Times in its edition dated March 7-15. The picture taken at a traffic signal shows a youngster in a squatting position pasting a black sticker on the headlight of a vehicle in the middle of the road and a group of young women standing in front of vehicles and displaying placards. There are inherent dangers in such practices. The drivers tend to accelerate as soon as the signal changes to green and the volunteers may not have enough time to move out of the way. Even if one driver loses control, it can lead to a major accident. It is a safer practice for the volunteers to stand to the sides and hold placards. Similarly vehicles should be driven to the road margin and switched off before pasting stickers. The volunteers should wear reflective clothing so that drivers can see them from afar. It is also better if the volunteers work in conjunction with traffic personnel during such campaigns. I appeal to the organisers of such campaigns to ensure safety norms during such campaigns. I also appeal to the traffic department to prescribe and ensure implementation of safety norms before giving sanction to such campaigns. Commander E.A. Murthy (Retd.), Thanikachalam Road, T.
