D ear Delegates, I m Flaminia Jesi and I m the Secretary General of IMUN 2018. I have been collaborating with United Network since 2014 and this is my fourth year as staffer. Everything started five years ago, when I was a delegate exactly like you. I was representing Greece in UNICEF committee, I was so nervous and scared to speak in front of other 60 people. My first speech was a nightmare, I was afraid of talking in another language and I thought I wasn t good enough to make a reasonable speech. Then, when I got up to the podium and I started to read, my anxiety disappeared and I to my great surprise gained confidence in myself. I was so proud of my work: all of my insecurities were gone! It was in that moment, when I realised that this thing, IMUN, was something I wanted to make room for in my life. When I decided to become a staffer and joined United Network, I never would have imagined how interesting and challenging this experience would have been. I became part of a family full of interesting people to work with that eventually became some of the friends I spend time with in my life. Today the UN Family counts over 200 staffers and I would like to thank every single person for their contribution in making IMUN possible. IMUN is a great opportunity for high school students to learn and deal with their peers the same age in order to have discussions about very pressing topics and learn the value of compromising and cooperation. Every year IMUN is becoming bigger and more international than ever before and I would like to remind you that it s not all about work but also the opportunity to make friendships with Italian people from other cities or even people from all over the world. Always keep in mind that this will be your stage, so delegates take all your passion and courage and be the best delegate. Wishing you the best luck for IMUN, Flaminia Jesi Secretary-General IMUN 2018 sg.roma@unitednetwork.it

D ear Delegates, our names are Giulia Cappella and Chiara Magliocca, and we are the Directors-General for IMUN Rome 2018! It s a great pleasure for us to welcome you to this new, marvellous adventure which, if you let it, is going to change your life like it did ours. We both have been doing Model United Nations (MUN) for several years, and we agree on the fact that we both would be very different people if we hadn t raised our placard that first time, or made our little speech on the first day. MUN has taught us a phenomenal amount of skills, such as working in a group, collaborating with other people, looking at issues from a thousand different perspectives, and appreciating and accepting other cultures and beliefs. These skills have proved themselves to be fundamental in shaping the people we are today, and we are enormously proud of the progress we have both seen from our first day. Maybe the most important thing we learned is to believe in ourselves, to have the confidence to start something new, to try something that scares us. On our first day in committee, neither of us wanted to speak, we were afraid of people s judgement and we were scared of making a mistake. Overcoming the fear of speaking in public has brought with it so many beautiful things, that little moment has made ourselves and our lives better forever. Seven years later, we have spoken in front of thousands of people with ease, we have walked to the podium in the real United Nations General Assembly Hall, and accomplished confidence in ourselves. It s normal to be scared, to be afraid, to feel intimidated by what is happening around you, don t let this stop you! The message we want to convey to you all is: give it a try! Throw yourself into a new experience, regardless of your fears and anxieties. We guarantee that you will feel so much better after you do, you will be proud of yourselves and happy of your progress. We wish you the best of luck for this edition of IMUN, and we are extremely excited to see how well you will do during these five days together! Do your best, enjoy this experience, and let yourself learn as much as you can while having fun! Love and good luck, Giulia Cappella & Chiara Magliocca Directors-General IMUN 2018 dg.roma@unitednetwork.it 3
