Descendants of Silas Coe Our goal is to research the pioneers that came into the Walla Walla Valley Area, as a starter for those doing their family genealogy; we are not related. Researcher: Sarah Olsen and Linda Kracke October 15, 2010 Generation No. 1 1. Silas 1 Coe was born 28 Jun 1814 in Pennsylvania, and died 28 Feb 1901 in Milton, Umatilla, OR. He married Catherine Walter 26 Feb 1835 in WayneCounty, Ohio. She was born 19 May 1809 in,westmoreland County, PA, and died 24 Oct 1903 in Milton, Umatilla, OR. Notes for Silas Coe: Some information is from Family Research, IGI. Submitters: Jeanette Elaine Seamons, 824 Canyon View Raod, Bozeman, MT 59715 Robert W. Parsell, PO Box 82, Whitlash, MT 59545 Thomas W. Burns, 7705 Ensley Drive, Huntsville, AL 35802-2845 ========================== Milton Eagle Vol.111 No.46 December 6th, 1889 - A Rich Ledge... During the past summer, while visiting relatives in Butter Creek, in the S.W. part of this county, Uncle Silas Coe discovered a well-defined gold quartz ledge at the head of the stream, in what is known 'as the Pot'. Samples of the float rock were sent to New York City for assay, and the result showed $100 to the ton. The ore is free working. The ledge is 12 feet wide and can be traced for a distance of one mile. A short distance from this new dicovered ledge is the "Yellow Jacket" mine operated by one man with an Arasta, who makes from $8 to $10 per day. On Sunday last, Mr Coe departed from Milton for his claim, and while there will arrange for its development. The famous "Cracker Creek" mine in Baker County yields $60 per ton, the quartz being similar to this newly discovered ledge.

She came to Milton in November, 1867, with her parents, the late Mr. and Mrs. William S. Frazier, who farmed the land on which Milton now stands.

Her mother was Rachel Paulina Williams of Alabama; her father was born in North Carolina. The two were married in Tennessee, moved to Arkansas, and then to Texas, where Mrs. Coe was born in Jackson City on April 20, 1857. The Fraziers and another family started for the Willamette valley by mule teams in April of 1867, and arrived in the Grande Ronde valley that fall. The Fraziers decided to stay in the Walla Walla district, living for a year on the Ingle place near Stateline and then moving to Milton. They farmed land which is now the south end of Milton along the river. Her father plotted the original town of Milton there. At the age of 15 she was married to Samuel Kester Coe, who had come to the district shortly after the Fraziers. They had 12 children, of whom seven survive. They are Mrs. C. H. Harris, Pendleton, Mrs. W. R. Craig, Portland, Arthur, Elmo and Harold Frazier all of Milton, Ernest Frazier of Portland, and Frank Frazier of Pendleton. She is also survived by a brother, William H. Frazier of Milton, 17 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, and one great-greatgrandchild. In 1875 Mrs. Coe joined the newly-established Methodist church in Milton, an she was also a member of the G.A. R. ladies. She was chosen as queenmother of the fiftieth anniversary meeting of the Umatilla County Pioneer association in 1942. ******** Walla Walla Union Bulletin (Walla Walla, Washington) > 1946 > December > 29, page 13 Five Generations As these lines are written, Susan Frazier Coe lies gravely ill at her home in Milton. Since this page a few weeks ago noted that Mrs. Coe had reached the nineties bracket in her life, further distinction has come to her. Since Susan K. Anderson was born in Surf, Calif., a few days ago, Mrs. Coe has become a great-great-grandmother though now too ill to properly appreciate the distinction.

The family tree which involves this five-generation group is: Mrs. Coe; Margaret Coe Campbell; Veril Campbell of Lompoc, Calif.; Phillis Campbell Anderson, Surf, Susan K. Anderson, Surf. ******* Walla Walla Union Bulletin (Walla Walla, Washington) > 1947 > January > 1, page 12 Coe Funeral Rites Held MILTON-FREEWATER The funeral of Mrs. Susan Coe was held Monday afternoon at the Methodist church. Music was furnished by Oral Garner of Pendleton and during the service Mrs. Oral Garner and Mrs. Rolly Garner sang several selections. Honorary pallbearers were Sam Adkins, Charles Spence, Charles Winn, Charles McKensie, John Ross, and C. D. Hobbs. Active pallbearers were the five sons of the deceased, Arthur, Elmo, Harold, Ernest and Frank and her son-in-law Clyde Harris. The ladies of the G.A.R. of which Mrs. Coe was a member attended in a body. Mr. and Mrs. M.H. Sent: Friday, June 24, 2005 7:36 AM Subject: Request for Campbell Research Dear Diane, I really appreciate your assistance in finding any information about Joseph Frankling Campbell (aka Sheriff Joe) that is available to you. I am particularly interested to know if you have anything that lists names of his parents, siblings, or other relatives. I would love a copy of the photograph of him that you have--even a picture of the bullet and a short paragraph about it would be very interesting. Joseph's great-grandson has quite a lot of family history information about the Coe line already, but nearly nothing about the Campbell line--that is mainly where his interest lies, so ANYTHING you have have be greatly appreciated. Supposedly Joe's father's name was Franklin Campbell and his mother's name was Sarah Clark--both of the parents, and Joe were from Ohio. Perhaps this will help. My mailing address is: Jennifer Livingston 360 W. 4800 N. Provo, UT 84604 801.244.2726

Please let me know the cost for any photocopies you may make--including what it costs to make a good copy of the photograph you have of Joe. Also, please send me contact information in order to send a donation for your research efforts. The Valley Herald, Wednesday, July 1, 1987 PICNIC IN 'HER' PARK HONORS MARY HARRIS There was a picnic at Harris Park, Sunday, along the swift flowing South Fork of the Walla Walla River. Sunday's picnic wasn't too surprising. Area residents have been escaping up the Walla Walla for decades to enjoy the cooling stream, soft breezes, outdoor dining and fishing. The picnic was organized by the Umatilla County Park and county commissioners. Star of the affair was Mary Harris, widow of Clyde Harris, who helped make the park possible through a contribution of land several decades ago. More recently the family's Harris Foundation made a significant contribution to a planned upgrading of the facility, and she was invited to the picnic to view the progress. She saw the inproved caretaker facility, a newly completed picnic shelter built around a stone chimney more that 60 years old, areas cleared of brush and a start on 12 planned R.V. pads. "The park commissioners have done a truly outstanding job of scrounging and scavenging to improve this facility through gifts, grants and contributions and no county general-fund tax dollars." County Commissioner Bill Hansell told the gathering, adding "They are a truly dedicated group."

Hansell noted that the existence of the planned R.V. pads will make the park eliglble for additional state funds. "I'm very happy to be here and thank you" said Mary Harris after being presented a cake in recognition of her contribution and that of her late husband to the recreational facility. "My husband and I spent many lovely times here along the Walla Walla and I hope that you and other residents of Umatilla County will have many enjoyable times at Harris Park, too." she added. PENDLETON - Clyde Harris, 78, who gave a multi-million dollar business to the Seventh-day Adventist Church, died in his home here Thursday morning. Friends of the family said Harris had complained of a minor discomfort and collapsed while his wife was getting an aspirin for him. Services are tentatively set for Monday at the Adventist Church here, with Burns Funeral Home handling arrangements. Harris, who started his business career in 1913 when he and his brother, C.B. Harris, opened a litthe box factory in Milton, Ore., believed that "the Lord will do all right by you if you do all right by him." BASIC TENET "To me and my wife," he often said, "Tithing has always been a basic tenet of the Christian faith." And the two paid much more than lip service to this credo. "It's worked, every step of the way," Harris once remarked. "Believe it or not, as we added fruit farms and orchards to our holdings, the devourer was rebuked and we invariably had good crops." Outlining his business success, he recalled that in 39 years of continuous operation, his company showed a profit every year but one. Talking of his early business days, with the Milton box factory, Harris once said: "We had two bosses and one employe." He and his wife soon joined the Adventist church, and began to expand their business in 1916 when a sawmill and a few more employes were added, and named Harris Pine Mills Inc. Later, Clyde Harris bought out his brother's interest in the firm which was moved to Pendleton in 1939. Although the business mushroomed into a multimillion dollar operation over the years, Harris followed the Adventist sabbath teaching and refused to operate on Saturday. "Some of those orchard men would get mighty upset," he recalled, "but I'd tell them we just couldn't work on Saturday. They'd threaten to stop buying

from us but they never did, and our business went right on booming. You see, we did right by the Lord and He did right by us." The mill also employed scores of students from Walla Walla College in College Place, an Adventist institution. Over the years Harris had been a major benefactor of the college. In 1952 he gave his huge business holdings to the Adventist Church, but remained president until his retirement in 1957. By this time the mill had a 6 branch assembly operations scattered throughout the U.S. Retirement did not halt Harris' gifts to his church. Several valuable properties also went to the church in 1960, shortly before he began a world tour to inspect Adventist missions and operations. In August 1967 he was awarded an honorary Doctor of Law degree from Walla Walla College. Shortly after, he gave an additional $50,000 to the institution, plus the present varillon in the college chapel.
