AMERICAN INSTITUTE OF ARCHITECTS TENNESSEE SOCIETY RECORDS 1919-1962 Processed by: Gregory T. Yates Accession Number: 92-083 Date Completed: 10-13-92 Location: XIV-F-3,4,5 Microfilm Accession Number: 1363 Microfilmed

INTRODUCTION The American Institute of Architects (1919-1962) consists of items relating to the operation of the Institute. The American Institute of Architects Papers are a gift of H. Clinton Parrent Jr., Nashville, Tennessee. The collection occupies 5.88 cubic feet of shelf space and numbers approximately 4,000 items. Single photocopies of unpublished writings in the American Institute of Architects Papers may be made for purposes of scholarly research. SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE The American Institute of Architects Papers span the period 1919-1962. The collection consists of account books, accounts, blue prints, bonds, bulletins, by-laws, charter, constitution, correspondence, fee schedules, financial documents, legislation, lists, maps, membership files, minutes, National convention files, news releases, newspaper clippings, notes, petition, printed material, programs, regional conference files, reports, and subject files. The American Institute of Architects, Tennessee Society, was formed for the purpose of promoting the profession of architecture in the state of Tennessee. Application to the society was made through the American Institute of Architects, National Society, then assigned to the state of residence of the new member. Annual membership dues had to be paid to both the National Society and the Tennessee Society, and were used to promote the profession of architecture for current and potential architects. The Tennessee Society met annually in different parts of the state, with committees on specific topics that met more often as needed. The American Institute of Architects, Tennessee Society, was incorporated on January 28, 1936. The collection deals with the daily operation of the Society, offering an interesting view into its function. The collection arrived in good order and was left very close to the original order, with only a few modifications. Included in the collection is a vast amount of membership information that can be very valuable for research purposes. Also of interest is the information concerning the various conferences and conventions attended by the members.
