PROFESSORS EMERITI Eight professors selected for 2017 emeriti award John Chapin, Ph.D. Deceased Dr. Chapin began his St. Petersburg College career in 1977 as a founding Science faculty member on the Tarpon Springs Campus. He led the expansion of the Science laboratory on that campus and introduced biotechnology laboratory exercises to the Biology/Human Anatomy and Physiology curriculums collegewide. He left St. Petersburg College in 1995 to serve in administrative roles at four other colleges, but returned in 2012 to serve as Dean of Natural Sciences. Upon his return, he led faculty teams that revised Science curriculums and developed two new Associate in Science programs Biotechnology Laboratory Technology and Biomedical Engineering Technology. He also took the lead in development, planning, and construction oversite for the STEM Learning Center at Bay Pines. The Science laboratories on that site are named for him. Dr. Chapin retired in September 2016. He passed away in February 2017. Sandra Cohen, M.A. Mrs. Cohen began her career as a high school Mathematics teacher in New York. She joined the St. Petersburg College faculty as a Mathematics instructor on the Tarpon Springs Campus in 2004. She was part of a collegewide committee that designed the Exploration of Math and Quantitative Reasoning course, and she helped reconstruct the College s Mathematics curriculum. She authored a CETL grant that began a Faculty Seminar Series on the Tarpon Springs Campus and established a Memorial Scholarship with the SPC Foundation in memory of her beloved husband, Bobby Cohen. Colleagues say she enriched the lives of her students with her special talent for ensuring success in sometimes difficult Math courses. Mrs. Cohen retired in April. She lives in North Carolina. 3

PROFESSORS EMERITI Eight professors selected for 2017 emeriti award Thomas Derzypolski, M.S. Mr. Derzypolski came to St. Petersburg College in 1997 as an Ethics instructor on the St. Petersburg/Gibbs Campus. He later moved to the Clearwater Campus, which is where students twice named him Faculty Member of the Year. His bachelor s and master s degrees are from Florida State University. A gifted and inspirational instructor, he used his communication and technology skills to adapt the department s Applied Ethics course material to online and blended learning environments. He created and tended to the department website creating an online history of the Applied Ethics program and adapted technology for the benefit of students with disabilities. He served as advisor to the Clearwater Campus Ethics Club for many years and often coached the College s Ethics Bowl Team. An Army veteran, Mr. Derzypolski served in Vietnam and was shot down from a guard tower on Christmas Eve 1969. Later, he received two Army commendation medals. He retired from SPC in January 2015 and currently lives in Tallahassee. Beverly Grundset, D.P.M. Dr. Grundset came to St. Petersburg College in August 1990 as an adjunct teaching Anatomy and Physiology courses on the St. Petersburg/Gibbs Campus. She became a full-time instructor a year later and eventually added courses in Biology and Microbiology to her teaching schedule. She has a Bachelor of Arts degree in Biology from Southern Adventist University in Tennessee and a Bachelor of Science degree and a Doctor of Podiatric Medicine degree from the Illinois College of Podiatric Medicine. She was very active in faculty organizations while teaching at SPC. She represented the St. Petersburg/Gibbs Campus on FGO for three years and served for 10 years as a college representative to the Florida Association of Community Colleges where she held numerous offices including state vice president on two occasions. Colleagues say her focus was always on her students and noted that she prepared many of them for successful careers in medical fields. Dr. Grundset was a Department Chairwoman when she retired in August 2016. She lives in Largo and remains active in the ministry of her church. 4

Leslie Honig, M.S.N. Mrs. Honig came to St. Petersburg College in 2001 to work parttime as a clinical instructor in the Nursing Department. A short time later, she earned a full-time position teaching Theory, Pharmacology, Pediatric Nursing, and clinical instruction. She has a Bachelor of Arts in Social Science from the State University of New York in Binghamton, and R.N. and M.S.N. degrees from Pace University. In addition, she is certified as a Family Nurse Practitioner. As a nurse at Morton Plant Hospital and other medical facilities, she cared for the most vulnerable patients and their families in Pediatrics and Neonatal Intensive Care, later sharing these experiences and lessons learned with her SPC nursing students. Her SPC mission was always student success and she spent countless hours of out-of-class time tutoring and supporting her students. In addition, she served tirelessly on the college s Curriculum Committee ensuring the Nursing curriculum was in alignment with accreditation standards. Mrs. Honig retired in September 2016 and lives in Safety Harbor. Mark Lulek, D.O.M. Dr. Mark Lulek began his St. Petersburg College career in 1988 as an adjunct instructor on the Tarpon Springs Campus. He became a full-time Communications instructor in 1990, eventually adding Humanities classes to his schedule. He was named Program Chairman of Fine Arts and Humanities in 2008. He has a B.S. degree in Education from Wayne State University and a master s degree in Rhetoric and Composition from Michigan State University. His doctorate in Oriental Medicine is from the Florida Institute of Traditional Chinese Medicine. He pursued that degree following a faculty exchange program with Baoji College in China, which he said, forever changed my life. He was part of a collegewide team that delved into the college s Critical Thinking Initiative in 2007 and later spoke on that topic at national conferences. He piloted the development of an International Center for Hellenic Studies on the Tarpon Springs Campus and expanded course offerings to include dance and music. Working with the Leepa-Rattner Museum, he developed internship opportunities for students at area art galleries and museums. Dr. Lulek retired in 2014 and lives in Dunedin. 5

PROFESSORS EMERITI Eight professors selected for 2017 emeriti award Maria Osterhoudt, M.S. Deceased Ms. Osterhoudt was an Associate Professor in Business Technologies at St. Petersburg College, beginning in August 2001 and lasting until her untimely death on Feb. 25, 2012. She is remembered as a caring and loving teacher who always put her students interests first and as a gifted artist who shared with her students not only the theory and knowledge of Computer Technology and Web Design, but also the application of those topics through creative projects delivered with excellence. She redesigned the Tarpon Springs Campus website and the initial website for the Veterans Legacies section of the Bilirakis Archives on that campus. Colleagues say they will always remember her kind and gentle ways and her endearing smile. A garden on the Tarpon Springs Campus was established and named for her. Vernon Taranto, Jr., D.M.A. Dr. Taranto became the full-time director of Choral Music programs at St. Petersburg College in 1996. He immediately began to develop innovative, independent-study courses in Music Composition, which were unique for our College and the state college system then and now. He directed the SPC Chorus, the Community Chorus and the Madrigalians. He founded the Tampa Bay Composer s Forum and his students were always a part of that group. He nurtured and encouraged the musicianship and compositional skills of many creative students over the years. He has many published compositions that have been performed by orchestras at Carnegie Hall and other venues worldwide. He has received numerous composition awards from the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers. His musical arrangement for the SPC Alma Mater is performed at each College graduation. His bachelor s, master s and doctoral degrees are from Louisiana State University. He is an Air Force veteran who played trombone and euphonium in the Air Force Band. He retired in December 2016 and lives in St. Petersburg. 6

LEAGUE FOR INNOVATION TEACHING EXCELLENCE Six selected for the 2016 League for Innovation Teaching Excellence Awards Congratulations to those chosen to receive the 2016 John & Suanne Roueche Excellence Awards from the League for Innovation in the Community College. The League is an international, non-profit organization dedicated to catalyzing the community college movement. It hosts conferences and institutes, develops Web resources, conducts research, produces publications, provides services, and leads projects and initiatives with member colleges, corporate partners, and other agencies in a continuing effort to make a positive difference for students and communities. The awards were presented at the 2017 conference in San Francisco. The 2016 St. Petersburg College award winners are: Patrick Booth Director, Online Student Services Excellence in Student Services Patrick Booth began his post-secondary studies at St. Petersburg College but struggled, needed help and eventually dropped out. He returned a year later with an inspired outlook that helped him focus and progress. He acquired his A.S. degree and then his B.A.S. degree in Information Technology, graduating with honors. Later, he earned a M.Ed. with a focus on Instructional Technology from the University of South Florida. His first job at SPC was as a Cyber Recruiter. At the same time, he volunteered as an Academic Advisor on the Tarpon Springs Campus and became the college s Director of Sports Information, a position he still holds. In 2010, he became Coordinator of Enrollment Management Services. He was promoted to his current position in 2016. Throughout his years at SPC, he has created and expanded programs that have upgraded student services including the development of the Online Advisement Center that handles more than 33,000 calls each year. His focus continues to be on enhancing a student s online experience. Kimberly Jackson, Esq. Social Sciences, Academic Chair Outstanding Student Engagement (on-campus or blended) Kimberly Jackson lives by the standard we stand on the shoulders of those who come before us and is an active community volunteer and leader. Her B.A. in Political Science is from Spellman College. Her juris doctorate with a concentration in International Relations is from Stetson University College of Law. She came to SPC as an adjunct professor in 2012 teaching Civil Trial Litigation and Introduction to Law in the Paralegal program. In 2015, she became the Academic Department Chair for Social and Behavioral Sciences at the Downtown and Midtown campuses. She currently teaches American Government and The College Experience. In the summer of 2016, she served as one of the lead professors for the Study Abroad Program to Vietnam. She has participated in programs with the Institute for Strategic Policy Solutions and serves on the college s Quality Enhancement Committee. In her spare time, she enjoys reading, politics, traveling, and spending time with her husband and children. 7

LEAGUE FOR INNOVATION TEACHING EXCELLENCE Six selected for the 2016 League for Innovation Teaching Excellence Awards Chad Mairn Seminole Campus Librarian Innovation in the Use of Technology Chad Mairn is a librarian, teacher, and author who frequently shares his enthusiasm for technology topics at technology conferences. At St. Petersburg College, he serves as an Information Services librarian, assistant professor, and manages the Innovation Lab. He is a SPC graduate, later earning a B.A. in Humanities and a master s degree in Library and Information Science from the University of South Florida. His recent interests have focused on mobile and emerging technologies. In 2015, the Innovation Lab received a Curiosity Creates grant from Walt Disney to expand the Maker Boot Camp series that promotes exploration and discovery for children 6 to 14. Imagination, originality, flexibility, decision-making, communication and self-expression, collaboration and motivation are the critical components of creativity that the Maker Boot Camp integrates into a curriculum. In addition, he plays drums in two bands and each year organizes the Seminole Campus Pinellas Comic and Maker Con. Laura Malave College of Computer & Information Technology, Academic Chair Innovation in the Use of Technology Laura Malave, a Tampa native, has B.S. and M.S. degrees in Computer Science from the University of South Florida. Cyber Security is a special interest. She has more than 13 years of college and university teaching experience at St. Petersburg College, Hillsborough Community College, and Keiser University-Tampa Campus. She has extensive experience in course development and technical training and holds more than 40 industry certifications including CompTIA A+, Network+, Security+, CSA+, CIW Web Design Professional, MTA, and MOS Master Specialist. She is very active with local Cyber Security industry associations including the (SC) 2 Tampa Bay Chapter, volunteering as a planning committee member for local conferences. At SPC, she teaches all things computer-related including Computer Engineering Technology, Computer Science and Information Systems, and Information Systems Management. 8

David Monroe Ethics, Academic Chair Outstanding Student Engagement (on-campus or blended) David Monroe is the co-editor and a participating author of SPC s ethics textbook, Ethics Applied. He also has edited two volumes in Wiley-Blackwell s Philosophy for Everyone series. He is the co-founder and former president of the Lighthearted Philosophers Society, a group of philosophers meeting annually to discuss humor seriously and laugh at the seriousness of philosophy. His bachelor s degree in Philosophy is from the University of West Florida and his master s degree in Philosophy is from Western Michigan University. He is currently studying Continental Philosophy at Staffordshire University in England. He has said he believes philosophical reflection is the key to freedom, an expanded mind, and a vital factor in a good life. In his spare time, Dave is an avid runner and loves creating culinary experiments for his wife and their friends. Anne Ryan College of Education, Lead Instructor Innovation in the Use of Technology Anne Ryan is a St. Petersburg College alum. Her A.S. degree is in Early Childhood Education. She also has a B.A. degree from Eckerd College in Human Development, and an M.A. in Education from the University of South Florida. In addition, she has a background in Nursing (R.N.), and Child and Family Counseling (L.M.H.C.). She has worked as a Pediatric Hospice Counselor and Early Intervention Specialist. She was an SPC adjunct faculty member for many years while working as a preschool teacher. She has been a full-time faculty member since 2004 and currently teaches Early Childhood Education courses in the A.S. degree program. She is a volunteer on multiple community committees involved in early childhood care and education. 9

2017 CETL DISTINGUISHED FACULTY AND DISTINGUISHED FACULTY IN CIVIC LEADERSHIP AWARDEES The CETL Distinguished Faculty Award is an annual award presented for excellence in one or all of the following areas: Enthusiasm for SPC s mission, culture and values Innovation and effective use of student success strategies Demonstration of best practices in student engagement Distinguished Faculty in Civic Leadership NEW THIS YEAR! This award recognizes faculty who have demonstrated commitment and service to the needs of our students and community. There were five awards collegewide for the 2016-17 academic year. Nominated by their academic dean, program director, or colleague, each recipient will receive an additional $1,500 for their professional development opportunities. This year s recipients are: Susan Blanchard College of Education Distinguished Faculty Nominated for her dedication to student engagement by establishing a mentoring and advising program at the Douglas L. Jamerson, Jr. Midtown Center, with a particular emphasis on minority teacher recruitment to help students impact the local community. Dr. Blanchard epitomizes student focus, academic excellence and a culture of inquiry through her creative teaching and service. - Kimberly Hartman Lynn Grinnell College of Business Distinguished Faculty Nominated for her dedication to student success and ability to engage students through active learning in her courses through WebEx, as well as her commitment as a club advisor with the Net Impact chapter. Lynn engages students by sharing her own passion for sustainability. Marilyn Michael Humanities & Fine Arts Distinguished Faculty Nominated for her dedication to SPC s mission and values through the arts and engagement. She developed several programs that provided opportunities for students to connect with the community Marilyn s personal commitment to musical growth is an inspiration to students. - David Manson Kim Molinaro Social Science Distinguished Faculty in Civic Leadership Nominated for her commitment to the sustainable direction of the Safe Harbor project. Her mentorship with Safe Harbor has led students to become ambassadors of change to spread SPC s culture and values to those in need in the community for more than five years. Kim s project has been heralded as an SPC Best Practice in student engagement and has been offered at state conferences as a project to learn from. SPC students and those they serve grow both professionally and personally. - Tara Newsom Melanie Paden Communications Distinguished Faculty Nominated for her innovative teaching strategies and her involvement in collegewide projects. She varies classroom activities to increase student engagement and accommodate differing learning strategies. She is a dedicated leader within the Communications Career and Academic Services Triad leadership teams, the QEP project, and through involvement with many committees. Actually, there is not really a committee where you don t see the impact that Melanie has had on the group. 2016-2017 SPC FOUNDATION INNOVATION GRANTS RECIPIENTS The St. Petersburg College Foundation s Innovation Grants Initiative provides financial resources to implement programs that deepen the college experience and improve student achievement. NEW FACULTY & ACADEMIC CHAIRS Aaron DeSpain Faculty, College of Business EpiCenter Aaron DeSpain moved from Washington to Florida in 2000 and earned his M.B.A. from USF in 2005. He worked in the financial services industry for 17 years, primarily in private banking. He currently holds Series 7 and 63 investment licenses and the ChFC financial planning designation. John Duff, Chair Faculty, College of Computer and Information Technology St. Petersburg/Gibbs John Duff earned his Ph.D. in Management Information Systems from Kent State University. He has prior experience in electronic commerce. At Eckerd College, he developed the Management Information Systems concentration and served as the college s Director of Information Technology Services. David Fitzgerald, Chair Faculty, Communications Downtown Center David Fitzgerald has been an educator for nearly 30 years. He holds degrees from Tulsa Community College, Tabor College and Wichita State University. His doctorate in Management is from the University of Phoenix. His published dissertation is entitled Nonacademic Socialization of International Baccalaureate Students. He has been a full-time assistant professor since 2008. 17

NEW FACULTY & ACADEMIC CHAIRS Joanna Maza Faculty, Veterinary Technology Veterinary Technology Center Joanna Maza received her B.S. degree from DePaul University and her D.V.M. degree from Tufts Veterinary School. She is a member of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons and a Veterinary Medical Officer for the National Animal Health Emergency Response Corps. She works as a small animal veterinarian in Sarasota and has been an instructor at SPC since 2013. Janet Modrakovic Faculty, Veterinary Technology Veterinary Technology Center Janet Modrakovic earned her B.A.S. in Veterinary Technology at SPC. She has been a Certified Veterinary Technician for 29 years and an adjunct instructor at SPC for 17 years. She is a member of the Florida Veterinary Technician Association and is the faculty advisor for the Veterinary Technology Society. Robin Nousiainen Faculty, Dental Hygiene Health Education Center Robin Nousiainen has a M.Ed. in Instructional Design from WGU, B.S. in Biology from USF, and a degree in Dental Hygiene from SPC. She is a member of the American Dental Hygienists Association and The American Dental Education Association. She is a Pinellas County School District volunteer and serves as a Quality Matters peer reviewer for online courses. 18

Alanna Olah Faculty, College of Business EpiCenter Alanna Olah has a master s degree in Hospitality & Tourism Management and a bachelor s in Psychology from the University of Central Florida. She is a Servsafe Instructor/Proctor, Certified TIPS Trainer, and Court of Master Sommeliers Level One Sommelier. She has been a TIPS National Trainer of the Month and was Professor of the Year at Valencia College. Scott Pelletier Faculty, Emergency Medical Services Health Education Center Scott Pelletier earned his Paramedic certificate, Associate in Science EMS, and A.A. degrees from SPC. He has been with the College since 2013 working in the Emergency Medical Service program as the EMS Program Support Coordinator. Prior to his position at SPC, he served in the U.S. Air Force, retiring in 2013 with 22 years of service. Jane (Mumbi) Pennock Faculty, College of Nursing Health Education Center Jane Mumbi Pennock earned her master s and bachelor s degrees in Nursing Education from California State University, Los Angeles. She is a member of the American Nurses Association, Sigma Theta Tau International, and the American Association of Critical Nurses. She has served at SPC as an adjunct Nursing instructor for two years. 19

He has taught Political Science and International Studies courses for six years. He is a member of the American Political Science Association and author of the book U.S. Foreign Policy in the Middle East: The Case for Continuity. Marta Przyborowski, Chair Faculty, College of Business Clearwater Marta Przyborowski earned her master s in Business Administration from Long Island University in partnership with Franklin College in Lugano, Switzerland, and her bachelor s in Marketing from USF. She is a graduate of Leadership St. Pete and most recently served on the 2017 Leadership St. Pete Planning Committee. Robert Weston Williams Faculty, Humanities and Fine Arts St. Petersburg/Gibbs Robert Weston Williams earned his B.A. degree in Music Arts from Stillman College, a master s in Vocal Performance, and a doctoral degree in Choral Conducting from the University of South Carolina. He has 29 years of experience in higher education having previously served at Fayetteville State University, Barber-Scotia College, and Benedict College. 20

LEADERSHIP SPC PARTICIPANTS Leadership SPC is a six-month internal program aimed at training current and emerging leaders on industry best practices, core competencies for community college leaders, and knowledge of college operations.
