Racinowski, editor/manager Alderman s Corner October was a hectic month with the kick off of budget season, and the final infrastructure projects beginning as construction season comes to a close. Holiday season officially begins as we transition into November. November is a time for giving thanks for family, friends, and food. I am thankful for all of the projects that have been completed in various locations throughout the Ward. As we transition into November, I am happy to be working with the Chicago Department of Transportation (CDOT) to complete the final projects included in my 2016 Aldermanic menu money. As I decide what projects to allocate monies for, I work to ensure that the money is equally distributed throughout the entire Ward. I am proud to say that for 2015 and 2016 we were able to have the following completed: 25 Alleys Resurfaced 11 HD Pod Cameras 8 Speed Humps 28 Street Resurfacing Projects 15 Curb and Gutter Repairs 23 Sidewalk Reconstruction For a map of this work, please visit my website (www.ward11.org) or stop in to obtain a copy. As a continued effort to bring more events to our community, the first ever college football game will be held tonight at Guaranteed Rate Field, home of the Chicago White Sox. Kicking off at 7:00pm, the Northern Illinois Huskies, will take on the Toledo Rockets. In September, I introduced an ordinance that amended the Chicago Municipal Code so that Residential Ball Game Parking is also in effect during all events that take place at Guaranteed Rate Field. Please make sure if you live in the Residential Ball Game Zone, you have your White Sox stickers and passes displayed two hours prior to the start of the game. I want to thank those of you who were able to make it out to Armour Park last week to learn and ask questions about the City s 2017 Budget. October was a busy month for my colleagues of the City Council and me. I attended every Budget Hearing and listened to each Department provide the details of their budget. I joined my colleagues by asking tough questions and challenging department heads on their decisions. The final vote on the City of Chicago 2017 Budget will be cast at the Council meeting on November 16th. I appreciate everyone s support and help during this Budget season. If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact our office at 773-254- 6677. On behalf of myself and my family, I want to wish you all a Happy Thanksgiving and look forward to seeing you soon. 11th Ward Alderman Patrick D. Thompson St. Jerome Girls Night Out Hey Ladies! WEDNESDAY NOVEMBER 9th, 2016 Athlete of the Month Maria Santana Maria Santana, 25 has been chosen as this month s Bridgeport News Southland Athlete of the Month. Maria began her Special Olympics career at Ray Graham Training Center where she competed in various sports and activities. She has been an athlete with the McGuane Park Special Olympics program for the last three years. Maria competes in Basketball, bocce, bowling, floor hockey, flag football, gymnastics, snowshoe, softball skills, track & field, and volleyball. But her favorite sport to compete in is soccer. Maria is a one-of-a kind girl with a BIG personality! She loves to participate in Special Olympics and train for upcoming competitions. Special Olympics means the world to Maria. Every month Maria checks the monthly calendar at McGuane to make sure her name is listed for the next upcoming competition. She is always ecstatic to see her name and always says, Hotel! Maria knows that if she receives a gold medal, she will advance to the State Competition, which usually involves an overnight hotel trip with her friends. This is Maria s favorite part of the Special Olympics Chicago program! If Maria is having a bad day, usually a reminder about an upcoming hotel trip can bring her spirits back up in no time. Maria is the youngest member of her family and lives with her mother and older brother. When Maria is not competing, she loves to sing, clean her room, and talk on the phone with her friends and her boyfriend, Eddie. When Maria was told she was going to be the next Bridgeport News Athlete of the Month, and that she would be appearing in the newspaper, she became so excited she yelled out: ARE YOU SERIOUS???!!!! She then proceeded to run around the room to tell all of her friends the big news. Maria is a hilarious and such a fun person to be around, says her coach at McGuane Park, Kate McIntosh. She loves to act silly to get a good laugh from her peers and Park coaches. Special Olympics is a huge part of Maria s life. She trains for upcoming competitions four days a week and is constantly asking about what sport or event will be next. Maria has learned a lot of new sports since coming to McGuane three years ago. She is willing to try anything new and is always looking to earn that gold medal. Maria adds a bright and fun component to the Magic team and reminds people never to forget the number one most important element of Special Olympics-to have fun! It is wonderful to have someone around to remind us the importance of having fun while we learn. I cannot tell you how proud I am of Maria and how much I have enjoyed working with her over the past three years. She has a close friendship with her peers and staff and we are so happy for Maria and all her accomplishments. This opportunity of winning athlete of the month is something I know she will never forget! Congrats Maria! The holidays are right around the corner, and there are a number of Special Olympics Chicago items that make great gifts for that hard-to-buy-for person.visit www.sochicago.org for a number of great gift items, including baseball hats, bags and more. By doing so, you will be helping to support the activities and events enjoyed by Special Olympics Chicago athletes like Maria. And, mark your calendars! Registration for the coolest fundraiser of the year, the Chicago Polar Plunge, will open November 29. The Chicago Polar Plunge will take place at North Avenue Beach on March 5, and you never know what celebrities will take part this year! The Special Olympics mission is to provide year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities, giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy, and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills and friendship with their families, other Special Olympics athletes and the community. The Special Olympics Chicago program is the largest in the state of Illinois, and operates through the Chicago Park District and the Chicago Public Schools. For more information on the Special Olympics Chicago program, to donate or to get involved, please visit www.sochicago.org. Commissioner Daley Introduces Resolution Establishing POW/MIA Chair of Honor in the Cook County Board Room At the Wednesday, October 26, 2016 meeting of the Cook County Board of Commissioners, Commissioner John P. Daley introduced a resolution with the support of Commissioners Luis Arroyo Jr., Jeffrey R. Tobolski and Larry Suffredin to establish a POW/MIA Chair of Honor in the Cook County Board Room. The resolution is aimed at recognizing the 83,000 US men and women in the US Armed Services who are currently unaccounted for according to the Pentagon s Defense Prisoner of War/Missing Personnel Office. The establishment of a POW/MIA chair will properly acknowledge the past and recognize current and future veterans in Cook County. Left to Right: Com. Arroyo, Former Alderman Balcer, Com. Daley, Dominick Ruggerio, Com. Suffredin and Bill Browne. The Commissioners were joined by Dominick Ruggerio of Rolling Thunder which works to publicize POW-MIA issues and will assist the Board of Commissioners in establishing a permanent POW/MIA Chair of Honor in the Board Room in near future. Former 11th Ward Alderman James Balcer and Bill Browne of the Cook County Veterans Affairs Department also joined the ceremony. During the Board meeting Commissioner Daley stated we owe an incredible debt to those who have served, including the more than 720,000 veterans who live in Illinois and I hope the presence of this chair inspires us to continue to work for solutions for problems that plague our veteran community here in Cook County. Fore the Girls Golf Outing Raises over $75,000 Queen of Peace High School hosted their Fore the Girls golf outing and auction on October 3rd at the Cog Hill Country Club in Lemont, Illinois. The event raised over $75,000 for the Queen of Peace Scholarship Fund. The funds will be used to help make a Queen of Peace education affordable for current and incoming families. A great number of our students benefit from the Queen of Peace Scholarship Fund so participation in an event like our golf outing is really providing a student with the support they need to attend Queen of Peace. We are so grateful to everyone who helped support this event including our sponsors, donors, golfers, friends, current families and alumnae and we look forward to building on this success in the years to come, said Anne O Malley, president of Queen of Peace. A shotgun start kicked off the day for golfers followed by a dinner that included both a live and silent auction. Some of the most popular auction items included tickets to Hamilton, a week long stay at a luxurious Beaver Creek, Colorado condominium and the opportunity to be on the field with the Chicago Bears during an upcoming home game. Guests at the luncheon were greeted by the Peace Ambassadors, a group of students who visit local school & community events to share their experience at Peace. In addition, dinner tables were lined with note cards from current students that shared personal stories about how the Queen of Peace Scholarship has affected their lives. Although this event is over the impact that these funds will have on Queen of Peace will be felt throughout this year and the years ahead. Plato THE MAN WHO ADVERTISES HIS BUSINESS HAS ONE Lipinski Invites Veterans to Share Their Stories for Library of Congress Veterans History Project Congressman Dan Lipinski (IL-3) is asking veterans in the Third District to share their stories so they can be preserved in the Library of Congress Veterans History Project (VHP). For any veteran that is interested, the Congressman s office will set up a recorded interview at a local site. The VHP collects, preserves, and makes accessible the personal accounts of veterans so that current and future generations can better understand the contributions and sacrifices they made. All veterans are invited to call Lipinski s Chicago office at 773-948-6223 for more information or to schedule an interview.at the conclusion of the recorded interview, participants will receive a copy and one will be sent to the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C. I encourage all veterans to take advantage of this unique opportunity, Rep. Lipinski said. Our history is the story of every person who has contributed in some way to our great nation, and that means every veteran, including those that served during the Cold War. Our heroes are not just those we read about in the history books, but every man and woman who has served our nation in uniform. All recorded interviews will be housed in the permanent collections of the Library of Congress. They will be available to researchers, scholars, students, authors, filmmakers, and anyone else visiting the library. For more information, go online to lipinski.house.gov. Lipinski Accepting Service Academy Applications Congressman Dan Lipinski (IL-3) is currently accepting nomination request letters from young men and women in the Third Congressional District who want to enter one of the U.S. Service Academies in 2017. One of my congressional duties that I enjoy the most is helping young men and women pursue their goal of serving our nation by entering one of our military service academies, Rep. Lipinski said. It is an honor and privilege to be able to nominate outstanding leaders who want to help others. I encourage those who are interested to begin a process that could change their lives and provide a great service for our country. The service academies include: Air Force Academy, Colorado Springs, CO; Naval Academy, Annapolis, MD; West Point Military Academy, West Point, NY; and Merchant Marine Academy, Kings Point, NY. Coast Guard Academy admissions are based on a nationwide competition with no Congressional nominations. Potential candidates must have reached their 17th birthday and not passed their 23rd birthday on July 1st of the year they would enter the academy, be a United States citizen, have graduated from high school, be unmarried, have taken the ACT and/or SAT, and have met the stringent entrance requirements of their preferred academy. The selection of nominees is based upon a whole person evaluation. Although nominations will not be made until January of 2017, all interested persons are encouraged to submit their written requests as soon as possible. The deadline for completed files is November 28, 2016. Please be advised that a congressional nomination does not guarantee acceptance into the academy. Nomination requests should be submitted to Rep. Lipinski s office at 6245 S. Archer Ave., Chicago, IL, 60638. The phone number is 773-948-6223. How Often Do Smoke Alarms Need to be Replaced? A national survey shows most Americans don t know the importanceof replacing smoke alarms every 10 years How often should the smoke alarms in your home be replaced? If you don t know, you re not alone. A national survey conducted by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) shows that nine out of 10 Americans don t know how often smoke alarms need to be replaced. The correct answer: every10 years. While the public generally knows that smoke alarms play an important role in home fire safety, some smoke alarm messages are not as well understood, says Lorraine Carli, vice president of Outreach and Advocacy for NFPA. Not knowing how often smoke alarms need to be replaced - or that they even have an expiration date - are among them. According to Carli, that lack of awareness means some U.S. homes may have smoke alarms that have outlasted their full functionality, putting people at increased risk in the event of a home fire. NFPA statistics show that three out of five U.S. home fire deaths occur in homes with no smoke alarms or no working alarms. Key Survey Findings: Half of Americans (50 percent) have three or more smoke alarms in their current home; Almost one in five Americans who have smoke alarms (19 percent) say the oldest smoke alarm they currently have in their home is 10+ years old; Nearly one in five Americans who have smoke alarms (18 percent) are not at all sure how old the oldest smoke alarm they currently have in their home is; When asked how often they should replace smoke alarms, nine in 10 Americans (90 percent) did not select the correct answer, which is once every 10 years. Working smoke alarms reduce the risk of dying in a home fire in half, said Carli. That s why it s so important to make sure they re working properly. A smoke alarm s age can be determined by looking on the back or side of the smoke alarm, where the date of manufacture can be found. Smoke alarms should be replaced 10 years from that date (not the date of purchase or installation). In addition, smoke alarms should be tested monthly, and batteries should be replaced when they begin to chirp, signaling that they re running low. For more information on smoke alarms visit www. firepreventionweek.org. Recently, a group of 8th grade students got to compete for a grant to improve the health and wellness of our students at school. Students had to come up with ways to make their schools healthier places. The students of Santa Lucia, with help from mentors and entrepeneurs, came up with a veggie-trend to ensure students could have access to healthy snacks while at school. To make this idea come to life at Santa Lucia School, the children created a plan to build a garden in an outdoor area of the school. In addition to the help they received with their plans, they were also awarded a $1,000 grant to implement the plan at Santa Lucia School. Congratualtions to this group of children with such ingenious ideas! Pictured from left to right are: John Tracy, Jacalyn burrows, victoria Gonzalez and Teresa ursetta. We don t choose between expereinces, we choose between memories of experiences. Even when we think about the future, we don t think of our future normally as experiences. We think of our future as anticipated memories. Daniel Kahneman Sisters are different flowers from the same garden. Author Unknown WedNeSday, November 9th, 2016 EDitorial DEaDlinE is FriDaY at noon
