the urban environment, and for achieving sustainability at the broadest level. This year the CTBUH Board of Trustees awarded the Lynn S. Beedle Lifetime Achievement Award to Henry Cobb, founding partner of Pei Cobb Freed & Partners. His list of tall-building achievements includes Hancock Place in Boston and the Library (US Bank) Tower in Los Angeles. Past winners of the Lynn S. Beedle Award, include Helmut Jahn, Lord Norman Foster, Cesar Pelli, William Pedersen and Adrian Smith. Henry Cobb has demonstrated phenomenal leadership throughout his career, particularly on Hancock Place, said CTBUH chairman Timothy Johnson. Cobb s leadership in smoothing out the difficulties around Hancock Place set the standard for future retrofits and advocated for positive changes to building codes around tall buildings. The Fazlur R. Khan Lifetime Achievement Medal went to Clyde Baker, senior principal engineer at AECOM, who has performed geotechnical engineering for seven of the 16 tallest buildings in the world, and a major portion of the highrise buildings built in downtown Chicago over the past 50 years, including nine with deep basements and slurry walls. Clyde has contributed so much to our industry, said Bill Maibusch, CTBUH Trustee. He has touched a lot of projects and been instrumental in making those projects successful. Winners and finalists are featured in the annual CTBUH Awards Book, which is published in conjunction with a major global publisher and distributed internationally each year. CTBUH AWARDS 2013 Supplemental Information: Winners and Finalists Americas: Winner The Bow, Calgary, Canada The Bow is a 237-meter curved commercial tower in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. Its form was shaped by both environmental and organizational analysis. The tower faces south, curving towards the sun to take advantage of daylight and heat, while the resulting bow-shaped plan that gives the tower its name maximizes views of the Rocky Mountains. The fact that The Bow is stunning as a form, but functions well from an environmental and urbanistic standpoint in a harsh climate makes it a standout project, said juror Antony Wood, Executive Director, CTBUH. Nigel Young Finalists Devon Energy Center, Oklahoma City, USA Tree House Residence Hall, Boston, USA Simon Hurst Peter Vanderwarker
Asia & Australasia: Winner CCTV, Beijing, China The unmistakable twisted form of the state television headquarters in Beijing may seem whimsical at first glance, but is actually the resolution of complex programmatic, planning and seismic requirements, forming a design response to the complex dynamism of modern China. The CCTV building is the type of building that may not happen again, said Jeanne Gang, awards jury chair and principal of Studio Gang Architects. It is an incredible achievement. In terms of structural engineering and iconography; in some ways it is like the Eiffel Tower of our time. Philippe Ruault Finalists C&D International PARKROYAL on Pearl River Tower, Sliced Porosity Block, Tower, Xiamen, China Gravity Partnership Pickering, Singapore Patrick Bingham-Hall Guangzhou, China Pearl River Properties Co. Chengdu, China Shu He
Europe: Winner The Shard, London, UK The Shard is a mixed-use vertical city, with office space on 25 floors, three floors of restaurants, a 17-story hotel, 13 floors of apartments, and four observation floors. The steel-framed pinnacle, clad with shards of glass is designed to blend into the sky. It stands next to London Bridge Station, one of London s busiest transport hubs, at the heart of a revived commercial area, amidst 2,000 years of history. The Shard is an amazing accomplishment for integrating a tall building in a historic city center, said juror Rick Fox, principal of CookFox Architects. Sellar Property Group Finalists ADAC Headquarters, New Babylon Towers, Tour Total, Berlin, Munich, Germany The Hague, The Netherlands Germany Jan Bitter MVSA Architects Johannes Foerster
Middle East & Africa: Winner Sowwah Square, Abu Dhabi, UAE Surrounding the Abu Dhabi Securities Exchange with four office towers and threading the complex with a two-story retail podium, Sowwah Square forms the anchor of the city s new Central Business District. The complex emphasizes a sustainable design approach throughout, and looks beyond the LEED certification process to integrate both active and passive sustainable design strategies. Moving towards LEED Gold is challenging in this region, and I applaud the strategies implemented in Sowwah Square, including the use of an environmentally responsive, double-skin façade which positively contributes to the overall energy performance and thermal comfort around the building perimeter, said awards juror Robert Okpala. Mubadala Real Estate & Infrastructure Finalists The Gate Towers, Abu 6 Remez Tower, Tel Aviv, Dhabi, UAE Israel Sorouh Moshe Zur Architects
