History The Cambridge Redevelopment Authority (CRA), established in 1956, is responsible for the management and implementation of urban redevelopment projects and other community development activities in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Since its creation CRA has administered many projects including the Kendall Square Urban Renewal Project, the Wellington-Harrington Neighborhood Renewal Project, the Walden Square Urban Renewal Project, and the City-wide Housing Rehabilitation Program, among others. - Page 3-
As of 2012 CRA urban redevelopment projects had resulted in approximately 6 million square feet of commercial development and over 2,000 newly constructed and rehabilitated residential housing units. In 1964 CRA actively began work on the Kendall Square Urban Renewal Project, one of the Authority s largest successful projects. Through several decades of targeted development the Kendall Square area has been transformed from an area of empty industrial space to an active and growing center of commerce. In 1968 the Wellington-Harrington Neighborhood Renewal Project became the nation s first resident-controlled Model Cities program. In partnership with Just-A-Start -- a Cambridge based non-profit organization dedicated to community development through housing services, community engagement, and educational programs -- the Wellington-Harrington renewal involved a program of community recreation activities in addition to property rehabilitation projects. During the 1960s-1990s CRA continued work on the Kendall Square Urban Renewal Area (KSURA), completed the Wellington- Harrington and Walden Square housing projects, and conducted studies for potential work in the Alewife, Central Square, and Harvard Square areas. The Kendall Square Urban Renewal Project is ongoing and remains a major focus of CRA development activities.
