Sheltered Housing

What is Sheltered Housing? Sheltered Housing is the term used to describe homes that have been especially designed for people to maintain or regain their independence, but have the peace of mind knowing support is available whenever needed, 24 hours a day, any day. With over 75 years experience we treat every one of our customers with dignity and respect, encouraging independence and choice, and respecting individuals privacy and confidentiality. We have 23 sheltered housing schemes city-wide. All of our accommodation is self-contained with its own front door, kitchen, bathroom, heating, bedroom(s) and call system. The properties we have available are either two bed, one bed, studio flats or bungalows. Who will be providing your support? If you do need support at some point, this is provided to each scheme through our staff teams. Outside working hours, staff are on standby to respond to any emergencies, however we also have 24 hour cover via a call service (Centra). 1

Our team of staff can help with: supporting you as an individual, ensuring that our schemes are well maintained and inviting places to live, contacting you daily in line with the support you as an individual have been assessed to need, letting you know about the services available to you, helping you review your finances, and ultimately increase your income by assessing welfare benefits you are entitled to, promoting your participation and involvement in scheme activities, encouraging links within your community and providing information to you on activities which may be of interest, assessing your needs for any support, after which we will arrange any further support as necessary. This is done through a support assessment, which is reviewed regularly depending on the level of support you receive or as your circumstances change, should any queries arise concerning outside agencies, we will help you to deal with these quickly, our call system (Centra) is aware of any changes in your circumstances, and is kept up to date with this information, at each of our schemes a poster is displayed identifying the schemes designated staff teams. 2

Our staff are not able to help with: administering your medication, providing personal care to you, changing any medical dressings. However, we can help you to find agencies to help with this if required. What does support actually mean? Support is provided according to your individual needs and therefore is unique to you, to help you live as independently as possible. One of the staff team will meet with you and complete a personal assessment plan so we can help you achieve your goals. A support assessment lists any related support that you need to help you sustain your tenancy and remain independent. This could range from help filling in a benefit form to arranging care services or receiving support visits to maintain your emotional well being. Support levels We can offer you up to 2 ½ hours of support per week, which could include daily calls and visits to accommodate your support needs. Please note that your level of support is not permanently fixed once assessed. It is regularly reviewed and can be changed as and when your needs change. The staff team may liaise with other agencies to ensure that your needs are fully met. For example: the National Health Service, Home Care, Health & Social Care and Benefits agencies etc. 3

Call system Every flat within our sheltered housing is equipped with a call service (Centra). Should you need any help in the case of an emergency, then simply pulling on the available pull cords or using your individual pendant (explained on page 5), will provide prompt assistance. The call service is monitored by Centra and is accredited by the Telecare Services Association. Centra aim to answer 96% of all calls within 30 seconds. The process for this response is that they tell you their name and greet you using your name. They then ask why you have pulled the cord or pressed your pendant, and what assistance you require. Centra will only call out staff if there is an emergency. This will be determined by a series of questions to assess whether your situation is urgent, and what is the most appropriate course of action. It could be that the paramedics are required or it may be reasonable that the outcome of the call can wait until your staff team are next due to visit your scheme. In some situations, they may suggest contacting a relative, neighbour or a friend. The staff teams are available to respond in urgent situations and genuine emergencies. Your co-operation and understanding will help ensure that we are available to respond to your emergency, should it ever happen. 4

Pendants A Pendant is a small device which can be worn around the neck or on your wrist, is linked with the call system and can be used to call for help should it be needed. If you feel you would benefit from having one, please ask a member of staff. Social activities A range of activities are held at each of our schemes; the type and frequency of which will depend on what you and the other tenants want and are prepared to organise. Paying for services If you receive housing benefit, full or partial, the cost of your support will be paid for by central government from a fund called Supporting People. However, if you do not receive housing benefit you can pay for the cost of the support service yourself. Any medical, nursing, domestic or personal care is not covered by the Supporting People fund. However, you may be entitled to get some help towards your care charges, if you are on a low income, disabled, chronically sick and have additional living costs. If you think you may be eligible or for more information please contact the member of staff in your area. 5
