SPRED in Bridgeport There are four groups of either children, adolescents, young adults, or adults who live with developmental or intellectual disabilities or learning problems. These people are welcomed to grow in their faith at the SPRED Center on 30th and Lowe Avenue above the chapel. We are looking for more families who have a person who could benefit from the SPRED program of any age or ability. We are also in need of adult volunteers who want to become involved and be a friend to a person with special needs in a small group. If you are interested in learning more about SPRED, visit our Website at www.spredchicago. org or call Elizabeth at 312 842 1039, ext. 13. Our goal is to have someone who represents their pastor from each of our local churches and who is an outreach to these families and to their parishioners who might want to know more. The SPRED program is unlike religious education in a parish. It is a small faith community formed by 8 adult volunteers who welcome 6 friends. You can participate at the SPRED Center on Lowe Avenue. We are not asking you to start the program in your parish. Come and help us since we draw from all the area parishes. An adult volunteer does not need experience with people with special needs just a warm and loving personality open to forming real friendships with others. Find out more by calling Elizabeth TODAY at 312 842 1039, ext. 13. Someone You Should Know A Woman with a Big Heart For the past several years, Santa Lucia School has planned a wonderful school and community event to honor people who have shown their dedication in the betterment of the school. Over the years, the school has recognized a great number of people that the school holds dear to their heart. One of the honorees for this years annual Lead With Your Heart Benefit is Mrs. Marge Piegari. Mrs. Piegari has been teaching for over 38 years! After a well decorated career, she has announced that she will be retiring after the school year ends this June. As so many of us are sad to hear this news, as she is a fantastic and innovative 5th grade homeroom teacher and 4th and 5th grade teacher, we also want to remember all the ways she truly has led with her heart in her years at Santa Lucia School. Many may remember her as the 3rd grade teacher as well as the math teacher for 4th and 5th grades as well. For numerous years, she was the first person children saw in the morning as she was the primary Morning Care teacher. This title was just a bit easier for Mrs. Piegari than other teachers as she lived just a few doors away from the school. And if you think that s great just wait! In addition to the morning program, Mrs. Piegari also spearheaded the bowling league out of the old Nap s Bowl. She was on the committee to begin the tradition of the Kids Kabaret as well as participating in the Cabaret Night for adults! Countless stories still float around about the Cabaret nights from years ago! The teachers and parishioners truly put on some great and entertaining show. Following this tradition, Mrs. Piegari created the children s version with a yearly Kids Kabaret featuring the talents of Santa Lucia School students. She offers students ideas to showcase their wonderful and unique acts. She has been a recurring moderator for the school's Student Council. The kids look forward to her school version of In It To Win It and Jeopardy games each year for Mardi Gras. The Spirit, the school s newspaper, turns out 4 5 editions each year. Mrs. Piegari is the technology coordinator, spending time also teaching the student staff on laying out the actual paper to prepare for print. Due to her great technology skills, she ran a Technology Summer School for a few years. This love of technology and math led her to becoming the 2002 recipient of the Heart of the School Award for Technology. This award is the Archdiocese equivalent of the Golden Apple Award, and quite an honor. Each year, parents and students alike, look forward to her creative ways of math instruction, and her After School Math Club where students learn with fun games and get extra help in areas they may be struggling with. Mrs. Piegari has been the mentor to many, many teachers both in the past, in the present and many students who will go on to be our future teachers! Mrs. Piegari s loving heart doesn t stop at the school. An active member of Santa Lucia Church, she regularly plays and sings at the school s weekly masses. She acts as both Eucharistic Minister and lector at the weekend church masses. She actively works with helping recruit new altar servers each year, training them, planning their special investiture mass, and preparing the monthly schedules throughout the year. She is on the Lenten Committee and helps to plan Lenten activities for the school children, creates wonderful bulletin boards for the church and schedules/arranges weekly Friday Stations of the Cross presented by the children of Santa Lucia. Finally, we can t forget to mention Mrs. Piegari s most beloved roles: wife, mother, and grandmother. Married to her husband and CPS teacher, John Piegari, she cared for him throughout his terminal illness, all the while working full time. The mother of three sons, all of whom graduated from Santa Lucia School, she is very proud to say she has an electrician and two teachers and wonderful boys. Doting grandmother to five grandchildren whom she will be spending her upcoming retirement years with, Mrs. Piegari truly embodies what Lead With Your Heart honoree is all about putting others first, loving with all your heart and doing whatever possible to ensure the success of the students, school and parish. Congratulations Mrs. Piegari! Job well done! Interested in attending this terrific event on Saturday, Feb. 10 at the Old Neighborhood Italian American Club? Please call the school at 312 326 1839 to inquire about tickets! Hope to see you there to honor Mrs. Piegari, a great teacher! Canaryville Library Do you want to learn a new language? Cherub Award at Saint Gabriel Parish St. Gabriel Parish is sponsoring the 5th Annual St. Gabriel Cherub Award Ceremony and Dinner honoring people who have given of their time and talent to the benefit of St. Gabes. The event will be held on Saturday, January 27, 2018 in St. Gabriel School Hall, 4500 South Wallace St., from 6 to l l pm. If your child has played baseball for the Little League in recent years, then you have first hand knowledge of the dedication of this winner of the Cherub Award. John Kozlar has been instrumental in guiding the growth of the Little League in Canaryville for several years. If you do not have a child playing baseball, but you have passed by the Little League Park in the last couple of years, you have witnessed the beautification of a block of real estate dedicated to the children of St Gabriel and Canaryville. John Kozlar has been the driving force behind the creation of this beautiful baseball field. We are grateful for John s dedication to the children of St. Gabriel and Canaryville. If you have attended the wonderful Christmas Eve Mass with St. Gabriel s Children enactment of the Gospel, you have seen the work of Carol O'Connell. Carol is also the creative force behind the beautiful liturgy on Palm Sunday where the passion of Jesus is enacted. Carol has directed both pageants for several years now. She gives several hours of her time rehearsing with the school children to enhance the Christmas and Palm Sunday liturgies. Carol also volunteers as a lector and Eucharistic Minister and has worked on several fund raising efforts as well. St. Gabriel Parish is blessed to have Carol as a parishioner and we are grateful to her dedication to the parish and the church. If you have ever attended one of the monthly meetings of the Canaryville Vets or if you have ever attended one of their moving Veterans ceremonies than you have encountered Tommy Russel. If you have witnessed the funeral of a Canaryville veteran, then you may have seen Tom in action. Tom has been dedicated to honoring and assisting veterans in need for many years. We are grateful for Tommy and the CV A and CVRA members dedication to St. Gabriel. If you have attended St. Gabriel Christmas or Easter Liturgy celebrations; or if you have attended one of the choir concerts in recent months, then you have heard Herb Schellhase s voice. Herb has been a dedicated member of the St. Gabriel choir for many years. Herb has also worked at many of the choir fund raising events. Herb is a kind and generous man and we are grateful for Herb s dedication to St. Gabriel. Join your family, friends, neighbors and fellow parishioners in honoring these four Cherubs at this special event. The Award Ceremony and Delicious Buffet Dinner will cost only $25.00 per ticket. Karen Kramer De La Salle News De La Salle is proud to announce that all eight of our fall team sports will receive the Illinois High School Association s Team Academic Achievement Award for their excellence in the classroom in the first part of the 2017 18 school year. Lauded are girls cross country; girls swimming; girls tennis; girls volleyball; boys football; boys soccer; boys cross country and boys golf. To receive this prestigious plaudit, teams must maintain a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better throughout their respective seasons. This marks the first time in De La Salle history that all the sports in one season have been honored by the IHSA. It s also the initial time that boys football has garnered the distinction. This is so awesome, De La Salle principal Mrs. Diane Brown said. When we talk about student athletes at De La Salle, we always place the emphasis on students as we focus on academics. We want our students to succeed in athletics, but first and foremost, we want them to succeed in the classroom academically and be accepted into the colleges and universities of their choice. I m also very proud of our coaches who are also educators and are working in collaboration with our classroom teachers to make sure our student athletes are very well prepared with their academics. I m so proud of this accomplishment because it lends itself to our academic curriculum and everything that De La Salle stands for. This is awesome news for us. Your Community in YOUR NEWSPAPER The Bridgeport News Your Wednesday Postal Service Asks to Please Clear Snow and Ice to keep Letter Carriers safe as they deliver the mail. With winter upon the city there has been below freezing temperatures and snow on the ground in many places. The Postal Service continues to ask customers to clear snow and ice from sidewalks, stairs and mailboxes, to help letter carriers deliver the mail. Snow and ice make delivery dangerous and slow, said postal spokesper son Tim Norman. Maintaining a clear path to the mail box including steps, porches, walkways and street approach will help letter carriers maintain consistent delivery service and is greatly appreciated. Customers receiving door delivery should make sure their sidewalks, steps and porches are clear. Customers receiving curbside delivery should remove snow piles left by snow plows to keep access to their mailboxes clear for letter carriers. Delivery service may be delayed or curtailed whenever streets or walkways present hazardous conditions for letter carriers or when snow is plowed against mailboxes. The Postal Service curtails delivery only after careful consideration, and only as a last resort, says Norman. Any curtailed mail is attempted the next delivery day. Blue collection boxes also need to be kept clear for cus tomers to deposit their mail and for the Postal Service to collect the mail for delivery. Residents and businesses with collection boxes near their property are asked to keep them clear of snow and ice. The Postal Service receives no tax dollars for operating expenses and relies on the sale of postage, products and services to fund its operations. MUST READ! This is the 8th year our Youth Group has visited the veterans. Pat Gleason, the director of volunteers at the hospital, welcomed us, showed a video and gave an interesting talk about the many ways that veterans are helped there. Afterwards, we broke up into groups, and visited many veterans in their hospital rooms. We brought gift bags filled with items that parishioners at St. Gabriel donated for all of the veterans. The veterans were so excited to receive them! It was truly a touching experience to see our teens interacting so well with the sick veterans and thanking them for their service to our country. A number of the veterans do not receive too many visitors, so they were very happy to see our youth take the time to visit and cheer them up. It was a powerful experience that our teens will never forget! Office of the Cook County Treasurer Cook County Treasurer Maria Pappas announces new programs: Pay online for free; Download your bill; Get your bill by email. Starting today, property owners who use their bank accounts to pay their tax bills online will no longer have to pay a $1 fee, a change designed to boost the growing number of taxpayers who make electronic payments, Cook County Treasurer Maria Pappas said. Removing the $1 fee is just one feature Pappas is offering to make paying property taxes more convenient: To pay over the Internet for free, visit cookcountytreasurer.com and select Make an Online Payment. To receive future tax bills by email, select ebilling. You will no longer receive your bill by mail. To obtain a copy of your tax bill, select Download Your Bill. That bill can be printed and used to pay by mail or in person. Online payments have soared from about 17,000 in 2001 to more than 485,000 in 2016. For property owners paying their taxes using a credit card, third party processing fees apply. Property Tax Bills are due March 1, 2018. Here We Grow Again! We re Royal Bank.
