After a nice Christmas Break, the students were excited to continue with the Christmas Season by celebrating an All School Mass to remember and recognize 3 Kings Day. In the Gospel of Matthew, we hear how three kings were led by a bright star to the little stable in Bethlehem to welcome the babe, Jesus. The three kings were named Melchior, Caspar and Balthazar. These wise men presented symbolic gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh. To honor the Epiphany and the 3 Kings, Santa Lucia 1st graders Courtney Beals, Isabella Galvez, and Olivia Barragan, donned the 3 Kings costumes to bring the gifts up to Father Stipe at the All-School Mass. It was a lovely presentation of gifts as everyone joined in singing Christmas carols. Left to right- Isabella Galvez, Courtney Beals, and Olivia Barragan bring the gifts up at an all school mass at Santa Lucia, representing the 3 Kings who visited the baby Jesus.

MeMorare Remember, o most gracious virgin Mary, that never was it known that anyone who fled to thy protection, implored thy help, or sought thine intercession was left unaided. inspired by this confidence, i fly unto thee, o virgin of virgins, my mother; to thee do i come, before thee i stand, sinful and sorrowful. o Mother of the Word incarnate, despise not my petitions, but in thy mercy hear and answer me. As 2016 ended, so did one of the most exciting competitions in American birding history. Some extreme birders compete in what is known as a Big Year, and 2016 was a big, Big Year indeed. The competition involves counting all of the birds you can find within the American Birding Association (ABA) zone over the course of a calendar year. Competitors spend months of time and tens if not hundreds of thousands of dollars flying, driving, hiking, and biking around the country. This year two birders, John and Olaf broke the previous record of 748 species, a record that stood for fifteen years, in July of this year. Since then both birders have added to their lists and at time of writing on New Year s Day, the race is still neck and neck. John has 777 officially logged species, while Olaf has 776, though both have a few waiting to be approved by the ABA. Following this exciting battle of the birders has inspired me to do a Big Year of my own, though one confined to the border of Bridgeport rather than the ABA zone. I invite other Bridgeport birders to join me! The borders of the zone shall stand as drawn on the chalkboard in Polo Cafe; the river to the North and West, the Dan Ryan to the East, and Pershing to the South. The borders are inclusive; for example a bird that you see on the river counts, as does one you see while waiting for the 35th St. bus at the CTA red line over the Dan Ryan. Competition this year looks to be fierce, fellow Bridgeport denizen Stephen Sparrow has already joined the race. I will be publishing my species lists on my new website, https://bridgeportnewsbirder.tumblr.com/. Feel free to write to me with your species lists for me to share at topo.chico@uchicago.edu. And as usual, I welcome questions and comments about birding at that address as well. Happy New Year Bridgeport, and good birding!
