A PLACE TO CALL Limavady town, surrounded by the stunning Roe Valley on the north coast of Northern Ireland, is a hidden gem between the country s second city, Derry/ Londonderry and the iconic Causeway coast. Mussenden Temple, Limavady The busy market town - with a population of more than 12,000 - is dominated by the towering Binevenagh, and borders the River Roe as it meanders its way from the Sperrin Mountains, down to the Foyle estuary. Known for its huge tourism potential, Limavady is home to the Roe Valley Country Park, one of the most visited landmarks in Northern Ireland. The town also hosts an array of popular annual events, including the Danny Boy Festival, the Limavady Jazz and Blues Festival, the Roe Valley Folk Festival and the Stendhal festival. The exact origin of Limavady is unclear, though estimates date it to be around the 5th century AD. One of the earliest records describes how Saint Colmcille presided over a convention at Mullagh Hill, just outside the town, in 575 AD. The meeting was to determine the future of the Irish colony that had settled in the South West of Scotland. The town is famous for supplying the music to the world famous Danny Boy song. It was from a fiddle player in Limavady that local woman Jane Ross first heard the melody.
