Living the Dream 1
A PLACE TO CALL Limavady town, surrounded by the stunning Roe Valley on the north coast of Northern Ireland, is a hidden gem between the country s second city, Derry/ Londonderry and the iconic Causeway coast. Mussenden Temple, Limavady The busy market town - with a population of more than 12,000 - is dominated by the towering Binevenagh, and borders the River Roe as it meanders its way from the Sperrin Mountains, down to the Foyle estuary. Known for its huge tourism potential, Limavady is home to the Roe Valley Country Park, one of the most visited landmarks in Northern Ireland. The town also hosts an array of popular annual events, including the Danny Boy Festival, the Limavady Jazz and Blues Festival, the Roe Valley Folk Festival and the Stendhal festival. The exact origin of Limavady is unclear, though estimates date it to be around the 5th century AD. One of the earliest records describes how Saint Colmcille presided over a convention at Mullagh Hill, just outside the town, in 575 AD. The meeting was to determine the future of the Irish colony that had settled in the South West of Scotland. The town is famous for supplying the music to the world famous Danny Boy song. It was from a fiddle player in Limavady that local woman Jane Ross first heard the melody. Binevenagh Mountain, Limavady Benone Beach, Limavady Limavady has undergone sustained growth during the past fifty years, thanks firstly to significant modern industrial development and more recently to the public perception of the town as attractive and residential. Limavady, a lucrative service hub for the Roe Valley, has seen competition from other retail centres close by, but what seems to set the town apart from other urban shopping centres is an ability to hold onto one off boutique style shops, offering a bespoke, personal service. The town also serves as an attractive and quiet commuter settlement to a number of larger centres, including Derry and Coleraine. A growing selection of restaurants and cafés awaits the visitor to Limavady and the Roe Valley whether you are grabbing a quick latte or lingering over a decadent dinner, the town can cater to suit every taste. There is a vibrant nightlife in Limavady, with a variety of pubs and clubs available in the borough many of which offer live music or entertainment at the weekends and during the summer months.
