2 The 26th International Poster Biennale in Warsaw dates: 9.06 15.07.2018 venue: Salon of the Academy of Fine Arts, Krakowskie Przedmieście 5, Warsaw REGULATIONS GOVERNING THE 26th INTERNATIONAL POSTER BIENNALE IN WARSAW Beginning in 2018, the organizer of the International Poster Biennale in Warsaw also referred to as the (26th) Biennale or (26th) MBP in Warsaw) is the Warsaw Academy of Fine Arts. Co-organizers of the Biennale are the Poster Museum in Wilanow, the Association of Applied Graphic Designers (STGU) and the OOH Agency AMS. The Warsaw Academy of Fine Arts wishes to continue the idea of reviewing international achievements in the field of poster design, a tradition that was introduced in the 1960s by professors that were associated with the Academy and at the same time were the co-founders of the International Poster Biennale, Józef Mroszczak and Henryk Tomaszewski. Not without significance is the fact that this year is also the 50th anniversary of the Graphic Arts Department of the Warsaw Academy of Fine Arts, which has played an important role in the development of Polish poster art. What s more, 2018 also sees the anniversary of the Poster Museum in Wilanow the first museum of this type in the world, which for fifty years has continued without interruption its pioneering, original mission to maintain an archive of the ephemeral art of the poster.
3 THE COMPETITION The dates set for handing over the organization of the Biennale to the Warsaw Academy of Fine Arts oblige us to organize this year s edition on the basis of the following regulations governing the thematic competition. The Thematic Competition This competition takes the form of an open one organized to celebrate the 100th anniversary of independence being re-established by Poland and other countries in the region Lithuania, Estonia, and Czechoslovakia (celebrated in 2018), Finland and Latvia (celebrated in 2017). This competition aims to evoke such values as independence, freedom, tolerance, cooperation. Everyone who meets the competition s conditions may participate. CONDITIONS FOR PARTICIPATION 1. Within the framework of the 26th International Poster Biennale in Warsaw there will be a thematic competition open to all. The organizer imposes no restrictions related to age and education. 2. The subject of this competition is independence and the associated concepts of freedom, equality, tolerance and cooperation. A description of the competition s subject and its historical background can be found in the introduction to these Regulations. A detailed description of the competition s concept can be found at: 3. From among the posters entered for the thematic competition, a five-person jury composed of designers and educators from the Graphics Department of the Warsaw Academy of Fine Arts will select works that will take part in the exhibition. 4. Designs of posters qualifying for the exhibition will be evaluated by an International Jury, which will decide the winners in the thematic competition. 5. Designs should be sent in the form of a print and a digital file by April 20th. Works sent after this date will not take part in the competition (this date is the deadline for works arriving at the organizer s office). a) Digital files must meet the following conditions:

Each participant may submit a maximum of 3 entries. TECHNICAL CONDITIONS GOVERNING THE THEMATIC COMPETITION: 1. Works sent to the 26th Biennale office s above mentioned address must meet the following criteria regarding their format of 100 x 70 cm applies. 2. Posters must have labels affixed in the upper right-hand corner containing information about the work and designer (first name and surname, title of the work in the original and in English, dimensions in cm, and printing technique). Labels and entry forms are available on the website of the 26th Biennale: 3. The shipped posters must be accompanied by a legibly filled in entry form together with a signed declaration that the entrant has read and accepts the Regulations and a statement claiming that the entrant personally and independently designed the poster submitted. 4. Posters should not be glued onto a rigid base or in any way bound. 5. The shipment should be carefully secured. The organizers are not responsible for damage caused during transport. Damaged posters will be refused entry in the competitions. 6. Shipping costs are to be covered entirely by the designers of the posters. 7. Failure to comply with any of the above conditions will result in withdrawal of the artist s work from the competition, the exhibition and the accompanying catalogue. Return of rejected works will be at the entrant s own expense. In the event of the
5 participant failing by July 30th 2018 to apply for a work to be returned, the work will be destroyed. 8. Shipments should be marked: PRINTED MATTER. NO COMMERCIAL VALUE 9. A list of participants whose entries have been accepted for the main and thematic competitions and are to be presented at the exhibition will be published on the 26th Biennale s website:, following acceptance of the entries. QUALIFICATION OF WORKS / AWARDS 1. Prizes will be awarded by the International Jury. The composition of this Jury will be announced on the website: on March 15th 2018. 2. The results of the thematic competition will be announced during the opening ceremony of the 26th International Poster Biennale in Warsaw, which will be held on June 9th 2018 at 18:00, and then published on the organizer s website: 3. The Jury will award the following prizes: 1st prize and gold medal PLN 25,000 2nd prize and silver medal PLN 15,000 3rd prize and bronze medal PLN 10,000 4. The organizers plan to also award sponsored prizes, including Józef Mroszczak Awards commemorating the founder of the International Poster Biennale in Warsaw, traditionally awarded by the Rector of the Warsaw Academy of Fine Arts. THE ORGANIZER S OBLIGATIONS 1. A catalogue is to be published on the occasion of the 26th International Poster Biennale in Warsaw. Participants whose works are selected for the thematic competition s exhibition will receive one free copy of the catalogue. 2. Works selected for the thematic competition will be published on the organizer s website at. By entering a work, its designer agrees to its free publication on the above-mentioned website with the name of the artist and the title of the work, as well as the date of its design and its description.

The organizer reserves the right to not enter a submitted work to the competition if its content or form is inconsistent with the requirements of the competition, in particular with the conditions for participation in the competition. Likewise if a submitted work s content is detrimental to the good name of the Organizer, third parties or is contrary to the law, the Organizer has the right to refuse the Participant entry in the competition. USE OF MATERIALS SUBMITTED 1. The person submitting a poster declares that he independently designed the posters (hereinafter referred to as the Work) sent and referred to in the Entry Form. 2. The Entrant declares that: a) his or her original personal and property rights to a Work are in no way limited or encumbered by the rights of third parties and that the Work does not infringe upon the rights of third parties; b) he/she has not granted any person an exclusive license entitling that person to use the Work; c) has the exclusive right to grant permits for the management and use of the Work; d) the rights and permits referred to below shall include all rights and permits necessary to make use of the Work in the scope specified below. 3. In the event of a third party submitting claims against the organizers of the 26th International Poster Biennale in Warsaw arising from a violation of that party s rights, the Entrant submitting such a work will be required to: a) appear at the proceedings (in the case of judicial proceedings) and take all steps to exempt the Biennale s organizers from participation in the case. b) fully satisfy said claims and thus the release the organizers of the 26th International Poster Biennale in Warsaw from any obligation to pay benefits in this respect;
7 4. The Entrant grants a free of charge non-exclusive license for the use of the Work beginning on the day of the Work being submitted to the 26th International Poster Biennale in Warsaw. 5. The entrant grants the Organizer of the 26th International Poster Biennale in Warsaw the above-mentioned license for use of the Work within the following scope: a) distribution of the Work, i.e. its public exhibition, display and broadcast, and also public access to the Work in such a way that anyone may have access to it in a place and time so chosen, b) recording of an unlimited number of copies of the Work on paper and on information carriers (CDs, DVDs, memory sticks, USB pen drives, etc.), c) saving the Work on a computer s memory, d) placing on the market a copy of the Work, as well as any image of the Work in a fixed form, and in particular the 26th International Poster Biennale in Warsaw may reproduce the Work in catalogues (in printed and electronic versions), leaflets, essays concerning the exhibitions at which it will be exhibited, as well as publish it on the Internet, in social networks, etc. 6. The license referred to in the Regulations governing the 26th International Poster Biennale in Warsaw is non-exclusive and is granted free of charge for an indefinite period. 7. The 26th International Poster Biennale in Warsaw is entitled to grant other entities within the scope defined above sub-licenses for use of the Work (submitted posters and their digital documentation). 8. By submitting a work to the competition, the Entrant declares that he has proprietary copyrights to the submitted digital versions of the Work and grants the 26th International Poster Biennale in Warsaw free, non-exclusive license for an indefinite period to use these under the same terms and conditions governing the Work. 9. In accordance with the Act of August 29th 1997 (concerning protection of personal data, Journal of Laws No. 133/97, entry 883, with subsequent amendments), the Entrant consents to the processing of his personal and contact details as provided in the Entry Card for the purpose of promoting and organizing the 26th International
8 Poster Biennale in Warsaw and events accompanying the Biennale, as well as inclusion of said details in printed and electronically published materials. 10. All disputes will be settled by the Polish courts according to Polish jurisdiction in force in the European Union. 11. Agreement to participate in the Biennale is synonymous with acceptance of the terms and conditions contained in the Regulations.
