Rmmates The Residential Life staff firmly believes in the value f learning t live with a rmmate. We believe that this challenges yu t wrk tgether t develp respect, acceptance and cnsideratin fr each ther. We suggest that yu discuss such things as sleep and study hurs, cleaning arrangements, apprpriate times fr visitrs and use f ne anther s pssessins with yur rmmate early in the year. In rder t supprt the primary gal f university life, academic pursuits, the Residential Life staff gives the rights t sleep, t study and t reasnable use f the rm precedence abve all thers. The Rmmate Bill f Rights is the primary tl used by the Resident Advisrs and Resident Directrs in redressing grievances between rmmates. Cnflicts Cnflicts between rmmates can revlve arund many issues. Yu are strngly encuraged t discuss the many issues surrunding living and learning in the residence halls. When cnflicts arise, residents are expected t attempt t reslve persnal cnflicts n their wn. If a cnflict has reached an impasse, the Resident Advisr r Resident Directr will act as a mediatr. He r she will prvide pprtunities fr yu and yur rmmate t share yur cncerns with each ther and wrk jintly t develp a strategy fr managing the cnflict. The Rmmate Bill f Rights and any ther prir agreements between yu and yur rmmate serve as tls in reslving this cnflict. The prcess f cnflict reslutin is nging and des nt end with the frmal mediatin. Bth rmmates are mutually respnsible fr fllwing up n all pints in any agreement. Often, new issues will arise, and yu and yur rmmate may need t add t yur current agreement either with r withut the assistance f Residence Life staff. There are certain issues that cannt be negtiated. All residents are expected t adhere t all plicies in the Student Handbk at all times. In any cnflict that invlves a vilatin f University r Residence Hall plicy, the resident respnsible fr the vilatin may be subject t disciplinary actin including but nt limited t a mandated, immediate rm change. 3

Tw peple sharing a residence hall rm may experience difficulties. Residential Life believes that many f these difficulties are manageable, with r withut assistance frm staff. Students will be encuraged t wrk with ne anther t slve disputes. There may be times when mre immediate actin is necessary, and Residential Life staff will intervene when apprpriate. Bill f Rights Althugh rmmate agreements vary frm persn t persn, there are sme basic expectatins that every student living in the Creightn University Residence Halls may reasnably expect at all times. We call these the Rmmate Bill f Rights and they include: The right t use the rm withut undue interference in yur rm. The right t sleep withut undue disturbance frm nise, guests, etc. The right t be free frm fear and intimidatin f physical r emtinal harm. The right t be free frm pressure r ridicule regarding yur chice t drink r nt t drink alchlic beverages. The right t exercise reasnable security precautins, such as keeping the rm dr lcked (which the University recmmends) at all times. The right t have yur persnal belngings treated with respect. The right t a clean envirnment in which t live. The right t free access t yur rm. The right t privacy. The right t have guests wh respect the rights f yur rmmate and ther residents. The right t expect reasnable cperatin in the use f shared appliances (e.g. telephne, refrigeratr, etc.) and a cmmitment t hnr all shared payment agreements. Cmmunity While living with yur peers, yu will have an pprtunity t meet students wh share yur values and interests and many thers wh d nt. We hpe that yu will take the pprtunity t experience and accept the vast diversity in the beliefs, values, and custms f ther students. While at Creightn yu will meet students wh cme frm a rich array f backgrunds, beliefs, and talents. Flr-mates, like rmmates, are challenged t wrk tgether t develp respect, tlerance and cnsideratin fr ne anther. Creightn University values student behavir that demnstrates mutual respect and cncern fr thers. Agreements: T frm a Cmmunity Agreement, yur cmmunity may be asked t persnally craft a dcument t suit its needs and expectatins. Yur Resident Advisr will begin the Cmmunity Agreement prcess at ne f yur first flr meetings t facilitate the develpment f a strng cmmunity n yur flr. Cmmn Areas: Individual(s) wh intentinally r accidentally cause damage, theft, r lss f service in cmmn areas f a residence hall will be charged the cst f repair, replacement, r restratin f the prperty r special service. All charges will be divided equally based upn ccupancy at the time f damage. Quiet Hurs : The University values the right t sleep and study in the residence halls. We therefre maintain that a student s request fr quiet supersedes anther student s right t play music, visit with guests, r engage in any ther activity. Quiet means that music, vices, and/r ther nises cannt be 4

heard in the hallway r in any rm dwn the hall, r abve r belw, when a resident s dr is clsed. If repeated vilatins ccur because f the inapprpriate use f stere r ther musical equipment, yu may be required t remve the stere r musical equipment frm the residence hall fr a specified perid f time. Residential Life requires that quiet, as defined abve, be maintained during the fllwing hurs: Sunday thrugh Thursday: 7:00 p.m. t 9:00 a.m. Fridays, Saturdays & Hlidays: 11:00 p.m. t 9:00 a.m. The right t sleep and study takes pririty ver all ther activities and privileges. Althugh quiet hurs cannt be shrtened, yur flr may chse t extend quiet hurs while develping yur Cmmunity Agreement (See Cmmunity Agreements, abve). During final exam perids, starting at nn the Friday prir t Finals Week, quiet hurs are in effect 24 hurs a day. In sme cases, staff may impse extended quiet hurs fr a specific timeframe if it is deemed beneficial t the wing, flr r hall cmmunity. Althugh specific quiet hurs exist, curtesy is expected at all times. When thers are nisy, it is yur respnsibility t first speak t the persn making the nise and request that he/she be quieter.
