Of special note is its contribution to wartime history, when the house became home to Air Chief Marshall Sir Arthur Bomber Harris during World War II and provided a significant focal point for Allied strategy. Singular guests of note were Field Marshall Montgomery, Sir Anthony Eden, Clement Atlee, Dwight Eisenhower and General De Gaulle. Royalty was present too, with King George VI and Queen Elizabeth paying an official visit in February 1944. In 2000, the house was purchased by the present owners from the RAF and converted into the impressive family home it is today. Significant investment was made to return it to a comfortable family home with generous guest/staff accommodation, as well as a home based business. Largely two storeys, the house is built of brick with pale stucco render, essentially composing a U-shape including a beautiful converted barn to the rear. The windows are a mixture of sashes and timber casements, with bay windows to the front and rear of the house. A particular feature is the master en suite windows with heavy double glazing, reputedly part of a panic room installed during the Gulf War in the 1980s. The main part of the house, leading from an impressive reception hall with its sweeping central staircase, appears to date back to the 1830s. The drawing room, converted from two original rooms, lies open to the hall and enjoys a triple aspect and period central fireplace. French windows open 2

directly onto the dining terrace and formal gardens. To the other side of the hall is the dining room, with its own fireplace and bay window over the front drive. From here the inner hall with flagstone flooring, leads back to the study and guest cloakroom and gives access to the large cellar. The ground floor continues through an impressive range of reception rooms and utility spaces, with features being the bespoke, hand built kitchen opening into the orangery and the double height converted barn. Whilst currently serving as office space, it would make an impactful entertaining room, with its own service kitchen and selfcontained rear access. The first floor offers a range of bedroom suites, including the bomb proof master en suite bathroom, with a total of eight bedrooms in all and the support of a back staircase. The single storey self-contained studio annexe lies across the courtyard to the main house and presently forms a series of modern office studios, three in all, with a cloakroom. This would lend itself to guest/staff accommodation and benefits from the self-contained second driveway from Springfield Lodge. The Lodge itself could provide a rental income and enjoys a secluded privacy to the main house and again affords a variety of options for ancillary accommodation. Our detailed floor plans illustrate the size and scope of all three buildings. Close to Village Life The property is located in an elevated level position, surrounded by the rolling countryside of the Chilterns in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. There are highly regarded first and middle schools just over half a mile distant, along with girls private schooling, with Pipers Corner under a mile walk away and Wycombe Abbey under four miles away in nearby High Wycombe. 5

The village fully serves day to day needs, offering a supermarket and a wide variety of independent shops, boutiques, restaurants, a post office and features like the independent Blue Door cinema. Home to the Roald Dahl museum, the village houses the Gateway School (one of the leading Preparatory schools in the south east). Landscaped Gardens and Grounds, Tennis Court and Fields The large level grounds are a real feature of the house and include formal gardens and adjacent fields. The present owners have invested in landscaping the gardens, which include a screened tennis court, orchard and secluded seating areas, opening onto the neighbouring fields. The house enjoys a generous private driveway and the lodge has its own self-contained drive, which in turn leads to the studio annexe and the rear courtyard. There are lovely views from every angle and the whole setting enjoys a high level of privacy. Outbuildings include a boiler room, wood shed, two store rooms and two double garages.
