Catherine Ryan Gleeson 1855 - March 13, 1932 From an obituary in an unknown American paper Mother of Fenner Resident, 79, Dies in Ireland It is with deep and widespread regret that the many friends in Ireland and America will hear of the recent death of Catherine Gleeson of Drombane, Thurles, County Tipperary, Ireland. Although nearly 79 years old, she had always enjoyed excellent health, so her illness of the past few months and death on Passion Sunday at the Thurles Hospital was a source of intense grief to all. She belongs to the real old Irish stock and was noted for her keen native wit, ceaseless love of prayer and work, and kindly hospitality. In 1927 she braved the wild Atlantic to cross to America where the unspeakable joy of seeing again seven of her children and enjoying their company awaited her. She enjoyed her stay of two years immensely and none of the American wonders surprised her much. She had the distinction of being the mother of sixteen children, fifty-four grandchildren and six great grandchildren. The large and representative funeral cortege from Thurles to Upperchurch leave striking testimony to the great esteem and love in which she was held. After requiem office and high mass she was interred in the nearby cemetery. A solemn requiem months mind mass was celebrated in Drombane chapel April 13, where she worshiped for over sixty years, at the request of her sorrowing children in America. To those children and her host of friends here who have enshrined the loved memory and guiding example of that Irish mother in their hearts, we tender our sincerest sympathy. From an unknown Irish paper Her surviving children are: Mrs. John Reilly, Mrs. Joseph Maloney, of New York City; Mrs. Michael MacMahon, Dan Gleeson, and James Gleeson, of Paterson, N.J.; Mrs. Michael Dwyer, of Cazenovia, N.Y. (daughters and sons); Edmund, Michael and Con, Jack Gleeson, Martin Gleeson (sons); Mrs. John Gleeson (daughter), of Drombane, Thurles, Ireland. On The Family Tree (9) Michael Ryan married a second time, to Catherine Kelly. According to that paper they had children: Johanna, Sarah who married a Ryan, Michael who married M. Short(1) and then B. Buckley (2), Patrick who married?, John, who married a Dwyer and Philip who married? A problem arose in that Catherine Kelly could not be found and the baptismal records for all of Michael Ryan s children listed the mother as Margaret Ryan. As the monument below shows Margaret Ryan did indeed die. Paul Galganski discovered that Michael Ryan had married a 2 nd time. He married another woman named Margaret Ryan. Philip Ryan and Anne Ryan had 11 children. The eldest child was daughter Margaret (Peg) M. Ryan. Her father was a Ryan - Raymond and her mother was a Ryan - Dan. Margaret was born on Jan 14, 1902 in Gortaculrish and she died on May 4, 1980 in Syracuse, NY. This is Margaret Ryan s gravestone in Upperchurch Cemetery. She was the 1 st wife of Michael Ryan. The photo was taken by Jeanie Muncie Bouthillier in December, 2005. McGrath--Ryan-Gleeson Connections 05-01-17a - 7 - Michael F. McGraw, Ph.D.

Michael Magrath and Catherine Hayes of Coolnamoney This Michael Magrath was in Coolnamoney at the time of the 1901 and 1911 census. His family s baptismal records were found among the Upperchurch parish records. There was a John Magrath in Coolnamoney in the Griffith s Valuation, on Lot 6 (3a-1r-2p). There is a single baptism record for a John McGrath and Margaret Ryan of Coolnamoney and that was the baptism of a daughter named Norry on Dec. 3, 1852. This possible connection will be explored further since the Michael below named his first son John and his first daughter Margaret. Michael Magrath b. 1842 (1838?) = Catherine Hayes b. 1869 m. Feb. 2, 1886, Upperchurch Margaret Magrath bap. Dec. 30, 1886 Sps. Thos Hayes and Mary Ryan d. 1972 John Magrath bap. Apr. 7, 1888 Sps. William Hayes and Margt Ryan William Magrath bap. Jul. 22, 1895 Sps. James Ryan and Mr. Matt Dwyer = Edmond bap. May 15, 1878 d. 1971 Willy b. 1911 Michael b. 1912 Mary Kate b. 1914 Babs b. 1916 Edward b. 1921 Bridie b. 1924 Connie b. 1925 = Peg Gleason b. 1915 = J. O Brien b. 1906 = J. O Brien b. 1913 = J. Lanigan b. 1922 d. 1967 = T. Nyhan b. 1921 = Freda Stapleton b. 1936 The family records for the children of Edmond and Margaret Magrath were provided by Jean Schelah. Edmond s parents are William (b. 1850, d. 1881) and Catherine Ryan (b. 1858, d. 1935). It was those records that showed Margaret s connection to Michael Magrath and Catherine Hayes which led to their children s baptismal records in the computerized baptism record in 2000. That was just a lucky catch since that list surpasses the coverage of the NLI microfilm records and the connections continue to grow. Source: The Family Tree was from Jean Schelah who is descended from William s brother Thomas. Thomas immigrated to the US in 1873. Many of Edmond s and his brother William s descendants are still living in the Upperchurch area and visited with Jean during her trip to Upperchurch in 2006. McGrath--Ryan-Gleeson Connections 05-01-17a - 8 - Michael F. McGraw, Ph.D.

Probable Michael McGrath Connections - Grandparents and Parents Clonoulty Michael Magrath = Mary Ryan Patrick 30 Mar 1808 John 2 Dec 1815, Boherlahan No marriage record found in Clonoulty back to the beginning in 1804. This family above had a son named John who could be the John below. The marriage below fits with the baptismal records of the John Magrath and Margaret Ryan below. John Magrath (Clonoulty) and Margaret Ryan (Bishop s Wood) married at Knockavilla, Co. Tipperary, Feb 7, 1836. Witnesses: Joseph Ryan, James Quinlan and Winifred Ryan. John s naming of his first son and first daughter is consistent with him being the son of Michael Magrath and Mary Ryan above. John Magrath = Margaret Ryan Michael 29 Nov 1836, Turraheen Mary 7 Mar 1838, Turraheen Winifred 9 May 1839, Turraheen Daniel 8 Sept 1842, Turraheen Patrick 15 Mar 1844, Turraheen Margaret 1 Dec 1845, Turraheen James 11 Mar 1848, Turraheen John McGrath and Margaret Ryan had a daughter Norry, baptized on Dec 3, 1852 while their residence was at Coolnamoney. This could be the same John Magrath and Margaret Ryan family above who had moved from Turraheen to Coolnamoney. Michael McGrath and Catherine Hayes named their first son John and their first daughter Margaret which possibly links them to the John Magrath and Margaret Ryan above. In the 1901 Coolnamoney census Michael was 59 years old which gives a birth year of approximately 1842. The Michael, son of John Magrath and Margaret Ryan, was baptized Nov 29, 1836. This gives an age gap of about 5 years which is not a real problem given the practice of Irish parents not telling their children their actual ages. In the 1911 Coolnamoney census Michael gave his age as 73 which gives him a birth year of approximately 1838, which is even closer to the 1836 baptism record. Michael s sister Winifred was also found in Coolnamoney and her 2 nd son has the same name as her father. The family was not found in Coolnamoney in the 1901 census. Winifred McGrath = Thomas Ryan Mary Ryan - Feb 23, 1869, Coolnamoney James Ryan - Jul 16, 1870, Coolnamoney John Ryan - Sep 16, 1872 McGrath--Ryan-Gleeson Connections 05-01-17a - 9 - Michael F. McGraw, Ph.D.

This might be the other son of Michael Magrath and Mary Dwyer from the top of the previous page. His first son was named Michael and his first daughter was named Mary and they were in Turraheen Patrick Magrath = Margaret Fahy m. 24 Jan 1837, Turraheen Witnesses Philip Fahy, Edmond Magrath and Mary Fahy Michael 24 Feb 1838, Turraheen Phillip 22 Jun 1840, Turraheen Thomas 7 Aug 1843, Turraheen Mary 18 May 1846, Turraheen Winifred 29 Oct 1848, Turraheen These possible connections described above benefited from several fortunate circumstances. Not every trail will have such a successful conclusion. The primary elements required for this activity are the family trees constructed from the baptism records to form the families. The second of these fortunate circumstances are the census records that connect to the baptism records and then there was the fact that the family was still residing in the same townland. The Irish naming convention allowed a connection to Michael s father in Coolnamoney at the time of the Griffith s Valuation. Here is where some real luck came into the picture. The next family connection was in the baptism records of adjoining Clonoulty RC parish. Michael s baptism record was found there using the naming convention and finding an appropriate age gap. Good fortune appeared once again in the early starting year (1809) of the Clonoulty records and a possible grandfather was found for Michael. Admittedly these connections are only held together by a naming convention, geographic proximity and proper age gaps but the final structure provides a very useful and visual device to guide future research. McGrath--Ryan-Gleeson Connections 05-01-17a - 10 - Michael F. McGraw, Ph.D.
