Movingonintheagenda,fromthesixworkshopproposalsreceived,threewererecommendedforfundingby thestd.alloftheseproposalswereapprovedforfundingbyecm119.workshopnumber75wasproposedbypstd andempdandisentitled"sheathphenomenainplasmaprocessingofadvancedmaterials".itwillbeheldfrom19th 23rdJanuary,2015inCerkljenaGorenjskem,Slovenia.Workshopnumber76,proposedbyASSD,TFD,andSSD,willbe heldfromjuly6th 10thinAvila,Spainwilldealwiththephysicalpropertiesofultrathinoxidefilms.Workshopnumber 77,finally,wasproposedbyVSTD.ItwillbeheldfromAug1520ororAug28Sept3,2016inFuefuki/Japanasasatellite meetingtoivc20inkorea.itwilldealwithsurfaceprocesses,gasdynamicandvacuumtechnologyofcryogenicvacuum systems. Concerning workshops and schools submitted it can be observed that several proposals had a very high scientificandtechnologicallevelsothattheprocessofselectingthebestproposalshasbecomeverycompetitive.inthe nextecmsseveralotherexcitingproposalsareanticipated. Finally,theVenueanddatesofECM121wasdecided.ECM121,whichalsowillincludetheIUVSTAhighlight seminarwillbeheldinconjunctionwiththe2015avsinternationalsymposium62.thisavs62symposiumwilltake placeinsanjose,california,frommonday,october19tofriday,october23,2015.thehighlightseminarisscheduled forfriday,october23andecm121willtakeplacefromfriday,october23tosunday,october25,alsoinsanjoseat thesamemeetingsiteastheavs62. BeforeECM119wasadjourned,thehistoryandthemainfieldsoftheCroatianVacuumSociety,werepresented bythecouncillorofcroatiaandpresidentofthecroatianvacuumsociety,slobodanmiloševi. AfterthesuccessfulcompletionoftheSundaymorningmeetingstheparticipantswereinvitedtohavelunch andtocontinuediscussions.alldelegatesagreedthatthiswasanexcellentandproductive. In the afternoon following ECM 119many delegates were transferred to the conference site of the 16th InternationalConferenceonThinFilms(ICTF16)whichwasalsototakeplaceintheCityofDubrovnikandwasan extremelysuccessfulmeetingwithmorethan300participantsfrommorethan30nations.

The16thInternationalConferenceonThinFilmswasheldinDubrovnik,1316October2014.Itwasjointlyorganizedby three national vacuum societies Croatian, Hungarian, and Slovenian under the general sponsorship of the InternationalUnionforVacuumScience,TechniqueandApplications(IUVSTA).Thecollaborationamongoldfriendswas exemplarywe understood each other without much words. A massive contribution came from the International ProgrammeCommitteeresponsibleforthescientificprogramoftheconference.Everythingwasinplacehoursbefore theconferencestart. theictf16. The conference lasted four days with three parallelsessionsoccurringdaily.eachdaybegan with the plenary lecture by one worldrenown speaker Sir Andre Geim, Joe Greene, Lars Hultman,andMasakazuAono,respectively. Seventeen invited talks gave insight into the stateoftheart of fourteen topics of the conference.thebodyoftheconferencewere116 oral and 136 poster presentations. The oral sessionsweremostlydevotedtooxidethinfilms (25), Thin films for optoelectronics, nanoelectronics and spintronics (19), and Innovative Methods of Thin Film Analytics and StructuralCharacterization(15).Allpresentations werefollowedbyquestionsanddiscussionscut shortonlybynexttalks(butcontinuedduringthe coffeebreaks,withicecreamalsoserved).poster sessions discussions were even livelier, stimulated by a free beer. A selected papers presentedattheconferencewillbepublishedin aspecialissueofthinsolidfilmsproceedingsof Therewereabout320registeredparticipantsfrom41countries83studentsamongthem.Theparticipantscame fromrepublicofkorea(61),croatia(30),france(23),austria(18),japan(18),germany(16),etc.overall2/3ofthem fromeurope.womenwereabout25%ofactiveparticipants. AshortcourseThinFilmNucleation,Growth,andMicrostructuralEvolutionlecturedbyProf.JosephE.Greenewas attendedby20listenerswhofilledtheroomtothemaximumofitscapacity. 4 P age

AttheclosingceremonytheawardswereannouncedfourIUVSTAElsevierStudentAwardsasasupportforattending theictf16,andfiveawardsforthebestoralorposterpresentationsbythestudents. TheconferenceprogramalsoincludedDubrovniksightseeingguidedtourwhichendedwiththeconferencedinner, singinganddancing. IUVSTANEWSBULLETIN 13th European Vacuum Conference, 8-12 September, Aveiro, Portugal OrlandoTeodoro,odt@fct.unl.pt The 13th European Vacuum Conference (EVC13) was held in Aveiro, Portugal from 812 September. It was a joint organizationoftheportugueseandspanishvacuumsocieties. ECV13 provided a useful and wellsupported forum for scientists to exchange the latest developments in vacuum technology and vacuumrelated science. However, this conference gathered experts not only in fields like vacuum generation,vacuummeasurementandlargevacuumsystemsbutalsointopicsassurfaceandappliedsurfacescience, coatings and nanotechnology. Special emphasis was given to hard coatings with the dedicated sessions of the 7th EuropeanTopicalConferenceonHardCoatingsandtooxidesurfaceswiththeSpecialSymposiumonUltrathinoxide filmsandoxidecoatingsapplications. AlthoughtheSchoolhasbeengearedtowardsthelevelofaPhDstudent,advancedundergraduateandMasterstudents, aswellaspostdoctoralresearchershavejoinedintheschool.intotal,33students,mainlyfromeu,russia(2),fareast (2),theUSA(1),Iran(3;conductingtheirPhDinVienna)haveattendedtheSchool.ThemainpurposeoftheSchoolhas beentoprovidegraduatestudents,phdstudentsandyoungresearchscientistsworkinginthefieldoflaserengineering of surfaces and coatings with robust fundamental roots that are often lacking in their training, so that they could profitablyinteractwithcolleaguesworkinginareasneighboring,butnotcoincident,withtheirownresearchfield.this researchareausuallyinvolvesplentyofquestionsrelatedtovacuumscienceandtechnology. 7 P age

Prizeswereawardedinaclosingceremonyforthebeststudentscontributions.Theschoolwasconcludedbyaround tablediscussionamongallstudentsandlecturersaboutthescientificexperience,exchangeandprofessionalpossibilities intheareaoflaserengineeringofsurfacesandcoatings. Questionnaireswerefilledbythestudents.Therewasaverypositiveresponseabouttheschool,itscontentsandquality. Someminorcriticismsweretheshortbreaksbetweenthelectures,whichhavebeencausedmainlybytheintensive discussions developing after the lectures between the students and the lecturers. Besides the invited presentations, four contributedtalksand11postershavebeengiven.theworkshopwasorganizedbythe NanometerStructuresDivision withsupportbythesurfacescienceandtheappliedsurfacesciencedivisions.theorganizingcommitteewithhongjun Gao,InstituteofPhysics,ChineseAcademyofSciences,Bejing,PRChina,MarkusKratzer,UniversityofLeoben,Austria, andthomasmichely,universityofcologne,germany,andwaschairedbychristianteichert,universityofleoben, Austria.TheworkshopwasopenedbythemayoressofEisenerzandtheRectoroftheMontanuniversätLeoben(Austrian SchoolofMines)thatwascoorganizingthemeeting.Twoeveningsessionsweredevotedtoposterpresentationswhich startedwithanoralannouncementbyeachpresenterwithina5minshorttalk.thejuryleadbypatriciathiel,iowa State University, US, selected the two poster prizes sponsored by the Austrian Vacuum Society. JohnL.RobinswasborninPerth,Australiain1935.Heobtained aphdinphysics(1962)fromtheuniversityofwesternaustralia (UWA).HethenheldresearchappointmentswiththeNational ResearchCouncilinCanadaandCornellUniversityintheUSA beforereturningtoaustraliaasaqueenelizabethiifellowin 1966.Duringtheperiod1968 1994,hewasamemberofthe academicstaffoftheuwa.afterretirement,hewasnominated asanhonoraryprofessorandseniorhonoraryresearchfellow. HisconstantandstrongdedicationtotheUniversityofWestern Australia had been recognized through the award of the Chancellor s Medal in 1999. John's contribution to his Alma Mater'scentenarycelebrationsin2013wastowriteandpublish a 'History of the UWA Physics Department, covering every aspectofthedepartment'sfirsthundredyears.inadditiontohis UWAappointment,JohnRobinswasalsoaVisitingProfessorat Curtin University of Technology and an Adjunct Professor at Murdoch University, both in Western Australia. During his period of activity, he also spent periods of study leave at CambridgeUniversityandtheUniversityofYorkinEngland,theNationalBureauofStandards(nowNIST)intheUSA andshizuokauniversityinjapan.hisresearchinterestswererelatedtovacuumscience,thinfilms,surfacephysics andmaterialsscience.hepublishedapproximately55scientificarticlesincludingthreebookchapters.hehasbeen theaustralasianeditorforthejournal"vacuum"andmemberoftheeditorialadvisoryboardsof"vacuum"and "ProgressinSurfaceScience". ProfessorRobinswasaFellowoftheInstituteofPhysics(London),aFellowoftheAustralianInstituteofPhysicsand afoundationmemberofthevacuumsocietyofaustralia. ProfessorRobinsservedIUVSTAinmanycapacities:asRecordingSecretary(198083),WelchScholarshipTrustee (19861989),CouncilorandAlternateCouncilorforAustraliaforvariousterms,VisualAidsEditorinChief(2001 2007),PresidentElect(1992 1995),President(19951998)andPastPresident(19982001).HewasEditorofthe 2ndeditionofthe HistoryofIUVSTA anditscompanionvolume ShortHistoriesoftheNationalVacuumSocieties withiniuvsta publishedin2001. JeanPaulLangeronwasborninLeCreusot(Burgandyregion,France).Hecompletedhisdiplomaasengineeratthe EcoleNationaleSupérieuredeChimiedeParis(NationalSchoolofChemistry,Paris)andreceivedhisdoctor sdegree from the University of Paris. He spent his entire scientific career at the Centre d Etudes de Chimie Métallurgique (InstituteforChemicalMetallurgy),alaboratorybelongingtotheNationalScientificResearchCenter(CNRS)andlocated invitrysurseine,(parissuburbs). TheearlyworkofJeanPaulLangeronwasrelatedtothepurificationof zirconium by zonemelting and the influence of impurities on the mechanicalandelectricalpropertiesofthemetal.withthehelpofhisco workers, he soon extended this work to other metals such as molybdenum.havingnoticedtheimportanceofsegregationofimpurities tothesurfaceandthegrainboundariesonmetalproperties,hestarted in1975toapplyaugerelectronspectroscopy(aes)tostudysegregation andpassivationphenomena.hequicklyexpressedaparticularinterestin the development of formalisms for a quantitative approach to Auger electronandphotoemissionspectroscopies,whichledhimtodiscussand collaboratewiththebestinternationalexpertsinthefield.hisexpertise andpatiencetounravelthemostcomplexspectrahavealsobeenmuch appreciated by the aeronautics industry, for which he remained a consultantuntil2010. JeanPaulLangeronwasaFellowoftheFrenchVacuumSociety(SFV),inwhichhewasveryactive,includingasPresident (19811983;19841985).HerepresentedtheSFVwithintheInternationalUnionforVacuumScience,Technologyand Applications(IUVSTA),asamemberofseveralscientificdivisionsuntil1992andasCouncillororAlternateCouncillorfor Francefrom1983to1995.Heorganisedorcoorganisedseveralinternationalmeetingsorconferences,includingtwo IUVSTAworkshopsonAES(11thIUVSTAWorkshop,St.PierredeChartreuse,1995)andXPS(34thIUVSTAWorkshop, SaintMalo,2002). SergeChoumoffwasarenownedexpertinthefieldofleakdetectionandvacuummetrology.TheJHPgauge(Jauge HautePression,orChoumoffgauge),describedintheearly70 swithiapteffascoauthor,provedtobeoneofthemost reliablehighpressureionizationgauge,althoughnotcommerciallyavailable.duringhiscareerasengineer,heworked forseveralcompanies(compagniefrançaisethomsonhouston,sociétégénéraleduvide(sogev),thomsonbrandtand HotchkissBrandt Sogeme (HBS)). In particular, he had been a major player in the design and implementation of Europeanspacesimulators. Serge Choumoff was a Fellow of the French Vacuum Society (SFV), in which he was stronglyinvolved,serving aspresident in19641965.heorganisedorcoorganised a numberofmeetings,includingthe1stinternationalcongressonthevacuumtechniques inspaceresearch(paris,1964)andwasveryactiveintheshortcoursesprogramme developped by the SFV. He represented the SFV within the International Union for Vacuum Science, Technology and Applications (IUVSTA), as a Councillor or Alternate CouncillorforFrance(196880and198392)andservedasTreasurerduringthe1977 1980triennium.HeremainedhighlyinterestedinIUVSTAmattersuntilhisdeath,closely followingthepreparationofivc19(paris,2013).sergechoumoffwasalsoafellowof theamericanvacuumsociety. Serge Choumoff was not only a top scientist but also a man strongly committed to fighting against nazism. Arrested in 1942 for having supplied components for radio transmitterstothefrenchresistance,hewasdeportedtogusenandmauthausen.from 1997,hepublishedseveralhistoricalstudiesrelatedtoconcentrationcamps.
