Seminar on Hard Rock Excavation Noise Control 11 Feb 2015 Organized by The Hong Kong Institute of Acoustics, The Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining, Department of Mechanical Engineering of Hong Kong Polytechnic University Supported by The Hong Kong Institute of Environmental Impact Assessment Speakers: Venue: Lawrence Lee, M K Cheung, Alfa Liu, MTR Corporation Limited Room N001, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, Hung Hom, Kowloon

By M. K. Cheung The construction of South Island Line (East) is a designated project under the Environmental Impact Assessment Ordinance (EIAO) in Hong Kong. An Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) tool has been developed for the project and was approved in 2010 during the design stage. An amendment of noise mitigation was further enhanced to suit and optimize their methodology in order to achieve a win win win situation for the Project Proponent, the Contractors and the Stakeholders. The EIA defined two main activities for the South Horizons Plant Building works, namely Slope Stabilization and Rock Slope Excavation. The excavation work was presumed to last for over 2 years by mechanical means involving intensive breaking and drilling with hydraulic breakers and drilling rigs respectively which could potentially generate excessive noise impacts to the nearby high density of residents with nearest 30m away from the work site.

This seminar gave an overview of challenges on the amendment of the construction method and the EIA which included the technical aspects of blasting operation and noise impact from the proposed alternative construction methodology by using opencast blasting in comparison to the mechanical method presumed, where pros and cons were also examined. The seminar was well attended with 60 participants from the government department, consultants, project proponents and contractors.

The Philharmonie de Paris Acoustic Design 18 June 2015, 18:30 20:30 Speaker: Dr. Thomas SCELO, Director Marshall Day Acoustics HK

By William Fung The seminar was jointly organized by the Hong Kong Institute of Acoustics and the Department of Mechanical Engineering of Hong Kong Polytechnic University. The West Kowloon Cultural District will establish a new vibrant cultural quarter located on a dramatic harbour front site in the heart of Hong Kong. It will be developed into one of theworld s largest cultural quarters, blending art, education and public space. In this seminar, the speaker had delivered the technique and skill in acoustics for a highlighted project in France. Dr. Thomas SCELO, director of Marshall Day Acoustics (HK), had introduced by HKIOA to giving a presentation regarding the project reference of the captioned venue. He introduced the conceptual design for the 2,400 seats Philiharmonie de Paris to us. It aimed at balancing early and late acoustic energies by nesting an intimate audience chamber within a larger acoustic volume. The acoustic / architectural concept and its genesis was shared, in addition to the 3D acoustic simulation, challenged by the complexity of the design, modern principles and tools for parametric acoustic design were developed to assist with the acoustic design, which were extensively used to speed up the design and achieve a higher degree of collaboration with the architect. These new tools for acoustic design had been presented in particular how the critically acclaimed Loudness, Envelopment and Clarity were achieved. To balance the early and late energy, in a fixed architecture without variable geometry, coupling calculations were conducted to estimate the presence of a late reverberant field and ensure sufficient strength to the late reverberant response of the hall. These calculations had also been shared. Finally, a new in house tool to measure 3D impulse responses and orchestra interactions were used to validate and commissioned the hall. Quoted comments from the international press around the time of its opening on 14 January 2015 had also been concluded. The seminar was well received by over 60 people participants and sharing the photo of a splendid concert hall.
