NASW Social Work Pioneers ABOUT THE PIONEERS The NASW Social Work Pioneer Program was created to honor members of the social work profession who have contributed to the evolution and enrichment of the profession. The Pioneer Program identifies and recognizes individuals whose unique dedication, commitment, and determination have improved social and human conditions. Pioneers are role models for future generations of social workers. Their contributions are reflected in every aspect of the profession, as well as in the establishment of social policies and human services programs. They have accomplished this through practice, teaching, writing, research, program development, administration, advocacy, legislation, and election to public office. In honor of my special friend and colleague Betty McCullough Spencer, NASW 2012 Pioneer, who is receiving this award posthumously. Patricia Wood Davis There can be no greater distinction than being a Social Work Pioneer, Congratulations! Having served our noble profession for over 50 years (34 at LSU), I came to realize of late- after retiring- that there is a summer after quarter of a century of past Dean winter (1986-2010). You, the Pioneers, are the future of this challenging calling. I fear at times social work will become its own nemesis. The goal of social work has always been the end of itself; a counterfactual ideal which we may never accomplish. I therefore urge, be the candle rather than becoming a mirror! Let your indelible optimism strengthen practice of hope to achieving a society without injustice. Love and Peace Brij Mohan In honor of Bob Connolly, Social Work Pioneer and friend, for his service to our field as well as his support to me and the countless others lucky enough to have crossed his path Sherry Parrish Congratulations to our new pioneers. Your records speak volumes about yourself and our profession. I regret not being able to join you this year, because I am attending my 45th college reunion this weekend Bill Pollard NASW Social Work Pioneers 8th Annual Program & Luncheon 2012
