What type of activity (e.g. housing fair, forum, housing study, etc.) are you planning? County-Wide Open House 3. Describe the proposed activity. Be specific about the details of how the activity will be executed. We will be putting on a large open-house event to promote Lake County as an affordable place to live. Our county is surrounded by areas with very expensive housing and many working people are priced out of the market. This event will help to show people that, with the help of downpayment assistance programs, they may be able to afford to buy a home and realize the American Dream. By partnering with the Chamber of Commerce and related business, we want to show that Lake County is an excellent place to live.

We will have lender participation at the open homes to help explain financing oportunities. 5. How does the activity fit into the association s affordable housing strategy or overall strategic plan? This activity will address our Community Outreach part of our strategic plan, by educating the public in available downpayment assistance, as well as financing options. Our vision is "to help Realtors to improve the consumer experience"; this open house event will help our members to achieve this. 6. What are the expected outcomes of the activity? Date of activity (or timeframe if an ongoing activity): Note: NAR will not consider applications for activities that have already taken place or that will occur before applications are reviewed and processed, which takes approximately six weeks from the submission deadline. Thursday, May 25, 2017 SA 2. What type of activity (e.g. housing fair, forum, housing study, etc.) are you planning? Cedar Rapids Metro Area Affordable Housing Bus Tour 3. Describe the proposed activity. Be specific about the details of how the activity will be executed. The Housing Fund for Linn County will partner with several area affordable housing providers, the City of Cedar Rapids, and the Cedar Rapids Area Association of Realtors (CRAAR) to offer bus tours showcasing a range of existing affordable housing in the community. The tours will be offered to elected officials and community leaders. It is a collaborative effort of several providers who have been part of a group that has been meeting for many years, with a goal of enhancing the provision for more affordable housing in a more supportive and highly efficient manner. Organizations that have been a part of the group, which convenes at the Cedar Valley Habitat for Humanity affiliate office are: Affordable Housing

Network, Inc.; Cedar Valley Habitat for Humanity; City of Cedar Rapids; Hope Community Development Association; Horizons, A Family Service Alliance; Housing Fund for Linn County; Matthew 25; and Neighborhood Development Corporation. The collaboration is planning to offer two bus tours one in the late morning and one in the early afternoon, in order to increase attendance by providing time options. In addition, a lunch will be served to both groups at the same time, which will provide an opportunity for each organization to highlight their accomplishments and give a broader view of all of their affordable housing activities. Each collaborative partner will choose properties they would like to highlight in the tour. Further, properties located in a mix of neighborhoods in a variety of locations throughout the metro area will be selected for the bus tours. A mix of single-family, owner-occupied, multi-family and rental will be selected for the tour, as well. Attendees will be given a map and brief information on each property, so that they can better understand affordable housing initiatives. The bus tours will provide an opportunity for the attendees to more fully witness the feel of the neighborhoods and how the affordable housing fits into them. The tour guides will provide a brief history or information on each property as the bus drives by, allowing the attendees to better understand and visualize the positive impact the housing and its residents have had on the neighborhood. 4. Explain why this activity is needed in your community/state and how the activity will address that need. The goal of the bus tours is to better educate elected officials and community leaders on what affordable housing is, how it fits into a variety of neighborhoods and who may be living in the housing. The collaborative partners have discussed and experienced the public misconception associated with affordable housing. The partners want to demonstrate the positive impact affordable housing and its residents have on communities and neighborhoods. By conducting the bus tours, the collaboration hopes to demonstrate that affordable housing is already located throughout the community and their neighbors do not even realize it. The collaborative partners believe that if bus tour participants can see the variety of types of affordable housing in a variety of locations that it will help dispel the misconceptions that people have about it and garner stronger support in the future. The partners recognize that there are many segments of society that hold misconceptions about affordable housing and its residents: elected officials, city and county staff, developers, and community citizens and leaders. The partners determined that the segment they would first like to target and invite to the bus tours are the elected officials and community leaders, since they are the decision makers and potentially the most influential in garnering support for more affordable housing throughout the community. 5. How does the activity fit into the association s affordable housing strategy or overall strategic plan? The CRAAR has been a strong proponent of affordable housing in this community for many years, recognizing it as an essential ingredient, to not only a healthy housing market but to a healthy community as a whole. Much of the affordable housing stock in Cedar Rapids and the CRAAR was

destroyed during the 2008 flood. Because of this the CRAAR has partnered with the City of Cedar Rapids in creating an affordable housing initiative for the community, not only identify what affordable housing is available but also the current and future needs. For communities to thrive, businesses within those communities must be competitive, and the people employed by the businesses must earn enough at the very least to afford life s basic necessities. Affordable housing ranks within the top three necessities when workers are looking to begin or grow their career. Affordable, urban housing is even more important for millennials and younger generations when considering what community, they want to live, work and spend their discretionary income. 6. What are the expected outcomes of the activity? 1) Elected officials, community leaders and other stakeholders will develop an improved understanding of what affordable housing is, what it looks like and who lives in it. Through partner testimonials, these individuals and groups will see the face of affordable housing. 2) Media coverage of the event will highlight the good work that s already happening in our community and emphasize the need to do more. 3) Partners in the local affordable housing group will band together and further strengthen their collaborative efforts in the affordable housing and neighborhood building sector. 4) Additional partners will be brought to the table, allowing the group to expand its vision and broaden its strategic efforts in the future. 5) The CRAAR and local affordable housing organizations will present a unique, impactful program that will solidify their joint efforts toward realizing the dream of a community where all families and individuals have safe, decent and affordable places to live. 7. Based on the expected outcomes identified in question #6; describe how the association will measure success. The CRAAR will measure the success of the tour by having full attendance on the buses, media coverage from newspaper and local news outlets as well as REALTOR participation. The long term success can be measured by an increase in workforce partnerships with local companies to promote affordable housing, future events that focus on affordable housing and utilization of the City of Cedar Rapids assistance program. 8. Describe the ways this activity will benefit the REALTOR association and its members. One of the initiatives of the CRAAR s strategic plan is to be seen by the public, media and elected officials as the leading advocate for private property rights and real property ownership. The event will help the CRAAR build a stronger alliance with the City of Cedar Rapids and local housing non-profits while educating the public, hence furthering our mission. The members of the Association will be able to market their properties and gain accesses to potential buyers/sellers 9. Describe the ways that REALTORS will be involved in the planning and execution of the activity. CRAAR staff and volunteer leadership will be involved in researching and selecting the housing that will be highlighted. Everyone involved will be asked to promote the event within their offices. The public relations committee of the CRAAR will be asked to promote the event through a myriad of channels. Realtors members will be asked to volunteer when necessary.

AT IO N 10. Describe the ways association staff will be involved in the planning and execution of the activity. The Association Executive will continue serving on the task force as well as volunteer when needed at the event. He will show his support and promote the event when he is meeting community business leaders and at REALTOR events. Staff will help design and distribute promotional material, promote the event on their Facebook page and website. I C 11.
