SALZBURG AUSTRIA PANZERHALLE 0 PANZERHALLE INVITES YOU TO A DISCOVERY OF SPACE. IN A WHALE OF A SPACE, THE MELODIOUS SPATIAL CURATION ENTICES YOU TO THINK BIG AND STROLL AROUND. THE TWO-STOREY BRINGS OUT THE BEST IN MINIMALISTIC TECTONICS WHILE BEING REINTERPRETED IN MANY REGARDS. AND WHEN THE ARCHITECTS OF SMARTVOLL REIGNED VICTORIOUS AT THE INTERNATIONALLY ADVERTISED CONTEST FOR THE IN PANZERHALLE IN 0, THEIR DESIGN SCHEME CAPTIVATED THROUGH SPECIFIC, SPATIAL DRAMATURGY. Renowned Austrian architect Adolf Loos once said: I never play with the façade, I do not live there. As Loos has concerned himself with definitions of space, smartvoll does the same, more than 00 years later. The design studio approaches the project with a notion of preserving as much as possible of the original design while cultivating a minimalist feel reminiscent of Loos s design ethos. A special focus lies on the exhaustion of materials and of what is technologically possible. Architecture unfolds on the inside. The room and material concept develops the encountered and retains the established. Smoothed and waxed concrete is one of the decisive materials for shaping the interiors. We wanted to revitalise the space s original charm. Magnanimity and a spatial experience of both storeys were priorities; in all dimensions, reveals smartvoll s Phillip Buxbaum, lead architect of this project.
PANZERHALLE 0 HONEST REVIVAL Preservation of the building makes complete sense in order to retain its unique charm. The Loft is not only being preserved but it is being enriched by completely new qualities. In order to ensure consistent airiness and brightness throughout the entire space, smartvoll forgoes the idea of typical galleries and to basically leave the upper ribbon window-free. Bedroom, bathroom and guestroom are distributed throughout the space as separate bodies. The epicenter of the room is the kitchen that features a seven-metre-long block. The entire composition is being rounded off by a concrete sculpture in a form of a staircase, which not only opens up all rooms, but also appears to be supporting them. Backing his idea on the staircase construction, Buxbaum shares: Through the stair sculpture, which spans across the rooms, you do not see the way between the levels as a vertical functional connection, but rather as an exciting spatial experience.
