The collection is part of the Barre History Collection acquired from the Aldrich Public Library in November 2014. The collection is housed in 2 large-sized boxes and 5 archival flip top boxes, occupying 4.5 feet of shelf space. Custodial Note and Arrangement History The Charles Albisetti papers are part of the Barre History Collection acquired from the Aldrich Public Library in November 2014. They were originally assigned the accession number 98.60 by the Barre Historical Society. Biographical Note The Albisetti family emigrated from Northern Italy in the late 19 th century. John Battista Albisetti (1870-1915) married Adele Maffini (1900-1973), in Barre, Vermont, in 1893. The couple lived on 32 Foster Street in Barre, Vermont, and had nine children, among them: Charles, Josephine M., Stephen, Elizabeth (Emerson), Teresa, and Eda. John Battista Albisetti, sometimes known simply as Battista Albisetti, worked in the granite industry, initially as a carver for Harrison Granite Company, and then as salesman for Wells-Lamson and Jones Brothers Companies. After retiring due to ill-health, John Battista served as city alderman and as justice of the peace for the town of Barre, Vermont. Upon his passing, at age 45, Adele Albisetti ran a guest boarding house at 195 Washington Street in Barre, Vt., for more than 40 years. The Albisettis son, Charles Albisetti, was born on June 25, 1904. He attended grade school in Barre, Vermont, and graduated from Spaulding High School in 1924. Charles Albisetti also received training as an auto-electrician through the correspondence course with the Chicago Engineering Works Review. On June 30, 1934, Charles Albisetti married Irene May Davis. During the Second World War the couple moved to Maine and volunteered for the United States Civil Service, working within Maine s Public Housing Authority. After returning to Barre, Vt.,
Albisetti Family Papers Page 2 Charles Albisetti founded Albisetti City Electric Company and managed business. He also served as chair of the Kiwanis Club of Barre, Vt., and facilitated events and support programs for the town s underprivileged children through committee work. Charles Albisetti and Irene Albisetti also travelled to Italy in the mid-1950s. Charles Albisetti passed away on August 23, 1998. Irene (Davis) Albisetti (1900-1987) was born in Williamstown, Vermont, to Albert E. Davis and Bertha (Clark) Davis of Brookfield, Vermont. Irene attended Brookfield High School and Goddard Seminary in Vermont. Irene Albisetti then completed a correspondence course in writing advertisements for shop windows in 1931. After marrying Charles Albisetti, in 1934, Irene volunteered for the United States Civil Service, and later for the Kiwanis Club of Barre. Irene Albisetti s siblings included: Harold L. Davis, Vera E. (Chaples) and Raymond J. Davis. Irene s brother, Raymond J. Davis, worked in the granite industry and passed away in 1959 in Barre, Vt., in a publicized incident where he was thought to have committed suicide. Irene Albisetti died on October 11, 1987. Scope and Content The Albisetti Family Papers span from 1875-1986 and document the professional and recreational activities of the Albisetti family after their arrival in Barre, Vermont. The collection is divided into the series: I. Charles Albisetti Work and Education IA. Irene Albisetti Work and Education II. Legal and Financial Documents III. Family Papers IV. Photographs and V. Travel and Leisure. This collection is focused on Series I (1910-1973), and documents the education and professional activities of Charles Albisetti and Irene Albisetti in Barre, Vermont, including Spaulding High School printed materials, Albisetti City Electric Company financial records, and Kiwanis Club of Barre correspondence. The first series also documents Irene Albisetti s correspondence course in show card writing, from 1931. Series II shows family members legal and financial documents, beginning with their arrival to Barre, Vt., in the 1890s; this series includes property deeds and marriage certificates. Series III shows family members personal and professional activities, including Adele Albisetti s personal correspondence, as well as family members writings, high school diplomas, and Catholic religious texts. Series IV contains family albums, portraits, and photographs that accumulated with each generation, including early postcard photographs of John Battista and Adele Battista with their children in Barre, Vermont. Series V focusses on the travel and leisure activities of Charles Albisetti and Irene Albisetti, especially within Italy in 1956.
