Presentation by Jean Marc Ibos et Myrto Vitart Grand Prix national de l architecture 2016 As we wanted to give an international dimension to the event, to strenghten the awareness of the students about the major issues in society and to promote interplay in contemporary issues, we have chosen to organize our Master Class in Venice, concurrently with the International Biennale of Architecture. The theme will be related to the one of the Biennale, titled Freespace, a word which describes a generosity of spirit and a sense of humanity at the core of architecture s agenda, focusing on the quality of space itself, according to Yvonne Farrel and Shelley McNamara, commissioners of the Exhibition. The location of the Arsenal in Venice corresponds to the project thanks to its scale, to its urban, environmental and architectural potential. The Arsenal of Venice is an outstanding place of the European industrial history where took place, as far back as 14th century, a process of standardization in the manufacture of boats. It allowed a very important production and an efficient maintenance of the fleet, thanks to interchangeable pieces. Another point of the system, that contributed to the historical booming of the town, is the sharing of the means, the War galleys being at peace time available for the merchants and rapidly ready to be used in case of war. That flexibility of the means and variety of uses appear once more relevant in our restricted resources world. As a perfectly limited territory in the town, the Arsenal site raises the question of the limits and how to get over it. As historical frontiers are part of the identity of the place, the conditions for its opening to the town will have to be imagined. At the time when the residents are repossessing this major place, the location of the Arsenal focuses attention. In a mainly touristic town, the students will have to think about the opportunity of the reactivation of the productive potential of the site. Venice is a heritage city, where any contemporary intervention has an impact which goes further than the simple limit of the project. It includes a notion of common good that has to be highlighted. It requires to find the scale said Le Corbusier thinking of his hospital in Venice. The purpose of the Master Class is altogether part of the major actual debates on the evolution of our historical towns that must face two issues: the world globalization of trade, its consequences and the necessary preservation of the resources. Freespace underlines the concepts of freedom and generosity that allow to manage these transformations in an open-minded and humanist perspective. The theme is open to any interpretation by the students during this week where sharing of ideas and proposals will be the essential purpose.
