SCOTTISH society of ARCHITECT artists summer exhibition HOUSE FOR AN ART LOVER GLASGOW JULY / AUGUST 2012 KAREN CAIRNS; PRIME POSITION
SCOTTISH SOCIETY OF ARCHITECT-ARTISTS The Scottish Society of Architect-Artists, SSAA, founded in 1987, aims to re-establish and reinforce traditional relationships between art and architecture. Historically the architect was an artist and artists became architects. The SSAA encourages members to continue developing their visual arts skills drawing, painting, sculpture, photography, print-making and other experimental art. It offers opportunities to continue art based educational interests by organising Exhibitions and Awards, Paint and Pint days, print workshops and life classes often in conjunction with Leith School of Art. Both artists and architects develop visual, mental and manual skills. Both work with texture, colour, form and light to manipulate senses in others who use or view their work. Architect-artists are unrestricted in their choices of media or subject matter. Traditional oils, gouache, inks and watercolours now combine with photography, computer generated imagery, and on occassions other experimental media to create vigorous exhibitions which range from monochromatic to vivid colour. Scottish architect-artists have celebrated their 25th anniversary throughout 2012 with a busy programme of events, and the publication of a fully illustrated book the first 25 years. SSAA also enjoys association with the vintage Ligne et Couleur founded in Paris in 1881 and re-established in 1936. SSAA Members exhibit annually with European colleagues in France, Italy, Germany, and Poland, and now invite reciprocal contributions to all Scottish events. Membership of the SSAA is open to all registered architects, retired architects and past and present students of architecture resident in Scotland, together with expatriates.
