The National Architectural Accrediting Board (NAAB), which is the sole agency authorized to accredit US professional degree programs in architecture, recognizes three types of degrees: the Bachelor of Architecture, the Master of Architecture, and the Doctor of Architecture. A program may be granted a 6-year, 3-year, or 2-year term of accreditation, depending on the extent of its conformance with established educational standards. Doctor of Architecture and Master of Architecture degree programs may consist of a pre-professional undergraduate degree and a professional graduate degree that, when earned sequentially, constitute an accredited professional education. However, the pre-professional degree is not, by itself, recognized as an accredited degree. The School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC), Department of Architecture, Interior Architecture and Designed Objects (AIADO) offers the following NAAB-accredited degree programs: M. Arch. Option II (60 graduate credits, requirement: pre-professional M. Arch. (102 credits, requirement: non-professional Option II (60 graduate credits, requirement: preprofessional (102 credits, requirement: non-professional The National Architectural Accreditation Board recently visited SAIC's Master of Architecture program, and has granted re-accreditation to the program retroactively to January 2014. The program was given a full eight year time frame before its next re-accreditation visit in 2022. The Master of Architecture program cultivates a new type of architectone who is grounded in practice, but who also incorporates perspectives from other creative disciplines and draws upon collaborations with artists and designers to become a truly innovative explorer of architecture. SAIC s NAAB-accredited Master of Architecture (MArch) program features a thematic cluster of courses integrated around the social, technical, and material conditions of architecture. Students learn the analysis of event, function, emerging technologies, and invention through hands-on construction.
