Chapter Events & Programs Allied Members have the opportunity to show their support, not only for AIA Richmond, but for the entire design community through participation in, and sponsorship of regular AIA Richmond events. Specific events may vary year to year. Below is a description of the typical yearly programs. Front Porch Front Porch This is one of our newest public outreach ventures, and one of our best attended, attracting hundreds of people each year. In an effort to foster closer working relationships with our region s creative community, we invite artists, advertising professionals, techies, bankers, art patrons, politicians, local government leads, gallery owners, art students, interior designers and craftsmen to a single, unstructured event where they may mingle and make connections that will help advance a collective creative voice for the Richmond area. This is yet another opportunity for Allied members to meet individuals who work in the many fields that are related to the practice of architecture and design. Architecture Week This is a unified, statewide, AIA public outreach effort undertaken simultaneously by all five Virginia AIA chapters. Events are geared toward making the public aware of the role of architects, and the importance of architecture in today s world. Programs include building tours, lectures by prominent architects, and exhibits. Allied Members will have the opportunity to expose their products to an audience beyond the architecture field. Additionally, publicity for this event offers all members an excellent opportunity to reach a target audience of the consumers of the many services offered by our members.
Chapter Events & Programs (cont.) Annual Design Awards Annual Design Awards Year in and year out, this is one of our most popular programs. Each year, AIA Richmond recognizes exemplary projects, their architects, consultants and their clients for outstanding recent work, as well as those architects who have provided a lifetime of outstanding service to their profession and the community. Allied Members will have an opportunity to socialize with many of the chapter s most widely-known practitioners, and learn what makes a great building in the eyes of the awards jurors. In addition to participation in this prestigious event, opportunities for sponsorship are available. Fall Lecture Series This year we will host our first annual Fall Lecture Series - a series of four lectures in September and October by prominent architects, artists, engineers and associated creatives with a focus on design. This will be a very high profile, well advertised series of public events that will offer sponsors high visibility. Golf Tournament / Paddleboard the James The AIA Richmond Golf Tournament is a yearly event which offers the rare opportunity to spend a relaxing afternoon playing golf, followed by cocktails for the members and guests. Participants in this event have included contractors, developers, building owners, engineers and others in the design and construction community. And, if golfing isn t your thing, we have a tandem event sharing the day - paddleboarding on the James River. Paddleboarders and golfers meet for cocktails at the end of the day at the clubhouse. Chapter Events & Programs (cont.) Holiday Party This is an opportunity for all AIA Richmond members to socialize, share in the season, and reflect on another year gone by, while looking forward to the future. Allied Members, like all members, are invited to socialize and enjoy the company of friends at this memorable event. Legal Forum Each spring, AIA Richmond joins with a major provider of design professional s liability insurance, to bring together many of the areas leading construction practice attorneys for discussion of the issues most relevant to the design profession. As an Allied Member, you, like our architect members, will have an opportunity to participate in this discussion of the latest legal issues facing the industry. Professional Development Series (monthly) These programs serve all AIA members and are intended to provide all of the necessary continuing education requirements for the year. Topics range from technical to design related issues, and include building tours. As an Allied Member, you are offered exclusive hosting opportunities for these programs to share your products and expertise with our membership. COTE (Committee on the Environment) The mission of the Committee on the Environment (COTE) is to provide the AIA with knowledge about environmental issues and policy matters affecting the practice of architecture. The Committee supports cooperation with educators and institutions of learning, manufacturers, government agencies, environmental organizations, and industry groups in advancing environmentally sound design processes and standards as well as environmentally innovative materials and integrated systems. They host and highlight sustainable projects within the Richmond region as a bi-annual on-site tour titled: Sustainable Richmond Tours. The focus of the tour is to have a critical discourse about particular strategies and provide opportunity to hear from not only the building owners but also installers, inspectors or any other entities that were involved in helping make the strategy/ies work. Richmond Women in Design (RWiD) Richmond Women in Design began in January 2010 to create a forum for women architects and professionals from allied fields to come together for education, mentorship, camaraderie, community outreach, programs and research. RWiD is affiliated with VSAIA s Virginia Women in Design and is a committee of the Richmond Chapter of the AIA. Our members are architects, engineers, landscape architects, interior designers, graphic designers and others involved in the designed environment. Events are typically scheduled for the first Wednesday of each month and the location revolves, depending on the program. Membership is free, thanks to the generous support of sponsors. Young Architects and Interns Forum (YAiF) These programs are geared toward interns who are currently pursuing licensure or are recently licensed. Programs generally vary from social events and hard hat tours to seminars and lectures by guest speakers. Programs are focused on topics of interest to emerging professionals.
