Ayresman had been in the Wabash service for ten years and had made many friends in Decatur and at other points along his run. He was a U.S. Representative, a U.S. Senator, and the Democratic Party nominee for President in the 1860 election, losing to Republican Abraham Lincoln. Obituary Stephen Ayresman Stephen Ayresman, a pioneer citizen of Ford county, died at his home in Derby at 2:00 a.m., on Monday, April 1, aged 76 years, 2 months and 13 days. He had been in failing health for some time. Stephen Ayresman, son of Jacob and Julia Ayresman, was born Jan. 18, 1859, at Stanford, Illinois, and was one of a family of eight children. When he was nine years old the family moved to Ford County and made their home in the Derby neighborhood. He grew to young manhood in this community, and on Dec. 29, 1883 was united in marriage to Miss Emma Fawver, of Saybrook and they established their home north-west of Derby, where he farmed for five years. Following this he moved to Derby and for several years was manager of the J.H. Holmes grain elevator. In 1904 he took charge of the business of the Gibson City Farmers' Elevator, which he conducted with splendid success for nineteen years. When he left this business in 1923 he again took up his work on the farm which he continued until about five years ago when his failing health compelled his retirement. In all of his business affairs Mr. Ayresman was a man of highest integrity, and scrupulously honest, and he held the confidence of all of his associates. In his community it always was a pleasure to him if he could do some kindly service for some of his friends, and always was ready to help them when trouble and sorrow came to their homes. In these ways he endeared himself to all, so that among the younger people he was known as Uncle Steve. He loved his home, and found his greatest joy in the affection and companionship of the family circle. When his tow sons were married their wives where received as though they were his own daughters. While a Sunday school was conducted at Derby he was a faithful worker, and for years conducted the singing, for he loved music. among fraternal orders he was has been a member of Hesperon Lodge, No. 123, Knights of Pythias for many years. His last illness was of about six weeks duration, and at times his suffering was intense. Through it all he was most patient, and never forgot to express his appreciation of any service, however small that was given to make him more comfortable. His death occurred at 1:30 a.m. Monday April 1st, at the age of 76 years, 2 months and 13 days. Mr. Ayresman is survived by his wife, one son, Lee, living near Harpster, two grandchildren, Donald and Bernice Ayresman, children of his deceased son, Earl, and one brother Albert, of Coal City, Illinois. Funeral services were held at 2:00 o'clock Wednesday afternoon at the Methodist church, in charge of Rev. A.H. Flagge. Interment was in the Gibson cemetery. She came to Ford county when she was 8 years old the family settling on a farm several miles southwest of Gibson City. When se was a young girl she united with the Salem United Brethren church, a country congregation which has long ago disbanded. She was married to Stephen Ayresman of this community Dec. 29, 1883. Mr Ayresman died April 1, 1935, age 76 years. Two sons were born to this union, Elton Earl, who died Nov. 2, 1918, at the age of 29 years, and Lee of this neighborhood, who survives. Mr. and Mrs. Ayresman had a homestead at Derby, four miles west of Gibson City, where they had lived for forty years, and where Mrs. Ayresman's death occurred at 7:00 p.m., on Thursday, Oct. 10, at the age of 77 years. She had been in poor health for several months, and bedfast since last June, with a complication of diseases incident to old age. Funeral services where held from the Methodist church Sunday, Oct. 13, at 2:30 o'clock, in charge of the pastor, Rev Donald H. Gibbs. Burial was in Gibson Cemetery.
