Descendants of Joseph Adams Generation 1 1. JOSEPH 1 ADAMS was born on 27 Aug 1770 in Redding, Fairfield, Connecticut. He died on 06 Sep 1819 in Stamford, Delaware, New York. He married Sarah Smith, daughter of Abraham Smith and Mary Gales before 1796 in Redding, Fairfield, Connecticut. She was born on 06 May 1776 in Greenwich, Fairfield, Connecticut. She died on 02 Feb 1839 in Hobart, Delaware, New York. Notes for Joseph Adams: Griffen A History of Stamford: "JOSEPH ADAMS was the only one of the name who remained long in the town. He came in 1797 and located on lot No. 97, east of the Town Plot, and was a sincere and honest man of good habits and good economy, and said: "If a man would labor one-half of each week day in the year he could obtain a good living for his family." He prospered in his business and after many years of labor unfortunately he was suddenly seized with a disease of the brain which produced immediate insanity, and though in the strength of manhood it weakened in a few days, and with a pleasant countenance he lay in the embrace of death on the sixth of September, 1819, at the age of 63 years." Joseph Adams and Sarah Smith had the following children: 2. i. SMITH 2 ADAMS was born on 12 Sep 1796 in Fairfield, Fairfield, Connecticut. He died on 05 Aug 1870 in Stamford, Delaware, New York. He married (1) RACHEL TAYLOR, daughter of Zalmon Taylor and Hannah Whitlock on 11 Feb 1824. She was born in Dec 1797 in Fairfield, Fairfield, Connecticut. She died on 16 Jun 1856 in Stamford, Delaware, New York. i PHILENA ADAMS was born on 09 Aug 1801 in Stamford, Delaware, New York. She died on 30 Nov 1884 in Stamford, Delaware, New York. PHIDELIA ADAMS was born on 01 Oct 1806 in Stamford, Delaware, New York. She died on 19 Mar 1889 in Stamford, Delaware, New York. iv. EDWIN ADAMS was born on 24 Jul 1810 in Stamford, Delaware, New York. He died on 02 Apr 1895 in Stamford, Delaware, New York. Generation 2 2. SMITH 2 ADAMS (Joseph 1 ) was born on 12 Sep 1796 in Fairfield, Fairfield, Connecticut. Notes for Smith Adams: Griffen "A History of Stamford" "SMITH ADAMS was a son of Joseph Adams and lived on a part of the farm owned by his father, and possessed the good qualities of industry and honesty, the latter to an extent seldom found among the generality of men, as the following circumstance illustrates: Many years ago each farmer went to New York City with his butter and sold it himself. In those days the butter was carried to Catskill in wagons, when it was placed on board of a "sloop" and transported to New York City. The scheming city purchasers would come on board of the sloop as it lay at the wharf with their butter tryers, and noticing the size of the dairy and the appearance of the packages, would inquire who owned such a dairy, and as the owner was usually near it, a price would be agreed upon, provided the butter suited the customer, who, when opened, would generally find some fault, saying it was too fresh, or too salt, or a little strong, etc. The fault found with Mr. Adams butter by the buyer was, "it was too salt." He replied, "I told our folks it was too salt." This was characteristic of the man, for he would use no deception, and wanted no more for a commodity than its value. He was plain in his attire, void of vanity, a relator of good stories and fond of social

She was born in 1847 in Roxbury, Delaware, New York. She died on 01 Aug 1904 in Hobart, Delaware, New York. Notes for Charles Smith Adams: The Leading Citizens of Delaware County Charles S. Adams represents one of the old pioneer families of Stamford, of which town he is a highly respected citizen. He was born on 29 Jun 1839, in the same house in which he now resides. He is a great grandson of Joseph Adams, a descendant of one of four brothers of the name of Adams who came to New England with the early colonists. Joseph Adams was born in Connecticut in 1740, his father, Abram Adams, being one of the first settlers of that State. Joseph was a farmer, and a soldier of the Revolutionary War. He died in Fairfield County, CT, at a good old age. His son, another Joseph, was born in August, 1770, and married Sarah Smith, born in May, 1776, also in Connecticut. In June, 1797, this worthy couple moved with horse and cart to Delaware County, NY, and settled in Stamford, where they cleared land and built a log house. Joseph Adams, Jr., was a weaver by trade, and followed this occupation to some extent after moving to Delaware County. He was one of the sturdy, courageous farmers of that time, industrious and faithful to his duties, and at his death owned a productive farm of one hundred and sixty-five acres of land. He died 6 Sep 1819, a Whig, of liberal religious views; and his wife

Generation 3 (con't) one hundred and sixty-five acres of land. He died 6 Sep 1819, a Whig, of liberal religious views; and his wife passed away 2 Feb 1839. They were the parents of four children, namely: Smith, born 12 Sep 1796; Philemus, born in Aug 1801; Fidelia, born in Oct 1806; Edwin, born 24 Jul 1810. Edwin is the only survivor of this family; and he is one of the oldest citizens of the town, residing with his son Charles. Smith Adams, son of Joseph and Sarah, was born 12 Sep 1796, in Fairfield County, CT, and was brought to Delaware County by his parents when but eighteen months old. He grew up to a farmer's life, and succeeded to the old homestead, where he died 5 Aug 1870, having passed a useful, successful life. His wife was Rachel Taylor, born in Fairfield County, in December, 1797, a daughter of Zalmon and Hannah (Whitlock) Taylor. She died 16 Jun 1856, the mother of three children, only one of whom, Charles S., of this sketch, is still living. The others were: Sarah Adelia, wife of John M. Bennett, who died in 1886; and Eliza Jane, wife of David Sturgess, who died in 1892. Charles S. Adams was educated in the district schools, after which he gave his attention to farming. His farm contains one hundred acres of land, and here he operates an extensive dairy. 9 Mar 1871, he married Miss Maria M. Ballard, a native of Roxbury. Mr. and Mrs. Adams are the parents of five children -- Francis B., John Q., Eva M., Mary, and Sarah. They are liberal-minded and public-spirited, and Mr. Adams is a Republican. He has made extensive improvements in the buildings on his place, which give evidence of his good judgment and ability. Charles Smith Adams and Mary Maria Ballard had the following children: 5. i. FRANCIS EVERETT 4 ADAMS was born on 20 Dec 1871. He died on 21 Jun 1956 in Stamford, Delaware, New York. She died on 27 May 1948 in Stamford, Delaware, New York. Notes for Francis Everett Adams: Frank Adams and his wife amassed between 1700 and 1800 acres of the Township region of Hobart. His 3 sons and their families operated the various farms as they became adults. Upon Frank's death, the land was split up, but none of the sons proved to be good businessmen, and eventually all of the land was sold. As of 2008, only one small parcel was still owned by direct decendents.

Marriage Notes: (Martha Holmes) Quote from the local newspaper: Generation 4 (con't) About 75 guests gathered at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Thomson, Wednesday to witness the marriage of their only daughter, Martha Holmes to Frank Adams of the Township. It was an exceptionally pretty home wedding. The ceremony was performed by the Rev. C. M. Herrick, assisted by Rev. A.A. Walker. The bridesmaid was Miss Eva Adams, sister of the groom and the best man was Robert D. Thomson, brother of the bride. The bride wore a dainty gown of white brocade trimmed with lace and she carried a bouquet of white roses. The bridesmaid's gown was of cream cashmere, becomingly trimmed with pink satin and she carried pink roses. After a sumptuous wedding breakfast had been served, the bride and groom left on the afternoon train amid the congratulations of a host of friends. The bride looked very attractive in her going away gown of green ladies cloth and beaver. They will visit Sing Sing, New York and Newark before their return. Mr. and Mrs. Adams were recipients of many useful as well as valuable presents. They are both held in the highest esteem by the community and a host of friends wish them happiness in their new life. Another account adds: The bride is one of our most estimable young ladies, a graduate Adams the high school and prominent in church work. The groom is the eldest son of Charles S. Adams, a wealthy farmer and a young man of excellent character. Francis Everett Adams and Martha Holmes Thomson had the following children: i. HELEN MARY 5 ADAMS was born on 12 Nov 1899 in Hobart, Delaware, New York. She died on 26 May 1959 in Medford, Burlington, New Jersey. Notes for Everett Thomson Adams: Everett was known as E.T.. He farmed the orginal family farm owned by his father on Township Road. They built the barn that is present there in the 1950's with all family members pitching in. My father, John Adams, remembers helping build it. E.T was well known as a cattle dealer in the area after he stopped farming full time. Upon retirement, he built a home for he and his wife, Mary, on Pickens Road in Township. Their son,

Generation 4 (con't) retirement, he built a home for he and his wife, Mary, on Pickens Road in Township. Their son, Ronald Adams, built a home nearby. After moving out of the farm, the house there burned, leaving only the "cheese house" and the barn. iv. CHARLES SMITH ADAMS was born on 09 Feb 1911 in Hobart, Delaware, New York. He died on 04 Oct 1992 in Hobart, Delaware, New York. Notes for Charles Smith Adams: Charlie farmed the "Bennett" farm for the vast majority of his life. He lived there with his father following the death of his mother. Charlie retained ownership of several other of the large farm parcels in the immediate vicinty including the "Lower Farm" and the "East Place." A woman named Mrs. Robert McGregor was a live in housekeeper for a significant period of time. The East Place remained a highly valued piece of property with all family members for as long as I can remember. Charlie was largely antisocial and kept to himself. He actively drove trespassers off his land, and in later years kept a number of dogs who were notorious for being mean. Every holiday the major topic of discussion was whether or not "Uncle Charlie" would show up. Mary Adams would delay many dinners hoping he would attend. He rarely did, but the year before he passed away, he surprised everyone by attending an Easter dinner. My father, John Adams, maintained a good relationship with Uncle Charlie despite his antisocial ways. v. J. ROBERT ADAMS was born on 11 Jun 1913 in Stamford, Delaware, New York. She was born on 28 Nov 1911 in Walton, Delaware, New York. She died on 03 Jan 2005 in Oneonta, Otsego, New York. Notes for J. Robert Adams: As a young married man, J. Robert farmed the "Lower Farm" on Reservoir Road in Township for his brother Charles Adams. This location had the ice pond that was vital to life in the earlier days of the region. J. Robert was a farmer on the old "Simmons" farm (alternately referred to as the "Corbin Farm" in Township until the early 70's. At that time they sold the farm, moved into the Village of Hobart and he went to work for the new York State Department of Conservation. J. Robert passed away from a brain tumor. 6.
