The Award is an international open call for an emerging artist to realize a major site-specific work at Frieze New York, May 3 6, 2018. Frieze is currently accepting artist applications for the Artist Award, which is supported by the LUMA Foundation and forms part of the fair s non-profit program. Adrienne Edwards will collaborate with Frieze for the first time, as the of the Artist Award at Frieze New York next spring. Edwards is a renowned curator, scholar, and writer with a focus on interdisciplinary art, performance and artists of the African diaspora and the Global South. Proposals for this year s edition will be reviewed by a selection panel unique to the Frieze New York 2018 fair, chaired by Loring Randolph (Artistic Director, Americas, Frieze Fairs) and including Adrienne Edwards, Liam Gillick (artist) Eungie Joo (San Francisco Museum of Modern Art) and Pablo León de la Barra (Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York). The Award will include a budget of up to 30,000 USD for production, research and development, artist fees and travel expenses. Victoria Siddall, Director of Frieze Art Fairs, commented: Frieze New York has always been a fair at which artists debut new projects, often specially conceived for this environment. I m thrilled to be introducing the Artist Award which is a great continuation of this and offers a unique opportunity to an artist, under the expert direction of Adrienne Edwards and with the generous support of the LUMA Foundation. With Edwards joining international curators Andrew Bonacina, Toby Kamps and Ruba Katrib, the fair continues to significantly develop its program. Loring Randolph, Frieze s Artistic Director of the Americas in New York stated: Adrienne Edwards is a pioneer in her field, challenging traditional distinctions between the visual and performing arts. I cannot wait to work together with Edwards, and I am honored that she has accepted the role as of the esteemed Artist Award. About the Frieze Artist Award, supported by the LUMA Foundation The launch of the Artist Award in New York follows an established program of Artist Award commissions at Frieze London. The 2017 Frieze Artist Award winner (London) was Kiluanji Kia Henda, whose two-part installation took the cult of Marxism-Leninism in Angola as its starting point. Previous award winners in London include Yuri Pattison (2016), Rachel Rose (2015) and Mélanie Matranga (2014). The Frieze Artist Award sits within a rich history of artist awards presented at Frieze Art Fairs, including the Emdash Award (2011 13) and the Cartier Award (2006 10). Explore all projects here.
