His native town or place observe we may Was Chelmsford Town in Massachusetts Bay There he did first his vital breath draw in There he was born into a world of sin There he did live till he was four years old As frequently he hath his children told Then straight he was brought to Canterbury Town Where none but salvages [sic] could be found Except one family of English blood As I have often heard and understood. Josiah and Abigail Cleveland joined the First Church of Canterbury the authorized Congregational church in 1713. 72 They separated from the church in 1744 and were involved in the organization of a separatist church, 73 as a consequence of the religious fervor known as the Great Awakening which shook New England in the 1740s. Their sons John and Ebeneezer were expelled from Yale for attending Separate meetings in obedience to their parents, but were allowed to re-enter and take their degrees. 74 Josiah Cleveland of Canterbury made his will on 28 Dec 1750. In it he mentions his wife Abigail; eldest daughter, Keziah Morse; eldest son, Josiah; daughters Abigail Adams and Mary Bradford; sons Elisha, John, Ebeneezer, and Aaron; and grandson Benjamin Brown. Among the property bequeathed was a Negro slave named Pompie. 75 Josiah Cleveland died in Canterbury on 9 Feb 1750/51. 76 His will was proved on 5 Mar 1751. 77 In 1753, his son John published An Epicedium of a poetical attempt upon the life and death of Mr. Josiah Cleaveland, which consists of some wretched poetry, if the excerpt in Cleveland Genealogy is any indication.
