Cemetery Information The old church records state that the cemetery was built and laid out around 1775. This makes it the oldest cemetery in the township. It was originally laid out with a plan to maintain order, which was rare among other cemeteries at the time. Using the plot of land that was chosen for burials ended up being a poor choice. This was due to the large amount of rocks and roots in the ground. A stone wall with cement form was built to surround the 58 X 70 pace cemetery. Burials here fell off very rapidly when the new cemetery at Mt. Zion was started in 1833. It is unknown when the last interment was made. Most of the first graves were marked only with a field stone that contained illegible or no writing. This has made it impossible to determine the first burials. There were no plots dedicated to families and it appeared that each party selected the best available land at the time. 4
