Emanuel, 55, failed to get more than 50 percent of the vote in order to avoid a run-off against secondplace finisher Jesus Chuy Garcia on April 7 th. What surprised most of Emanuel s backers, including Congressman Luis Gutierrez and City Clerk Susana Mendoza, was the fact that President Barack Obama s recent visit to Chicago last week could not even spur enough voted needed for incumbent Emanuel. However, Emanuel, who spoke to a large crowd after the election results at the Chicago Journeymen Plumbers Union Hall, stated, we came a long way and we have a little bit further to go. The setback for Emanuel s campaign was quite harsh considering he surpassed his fellow candidates by raising $15 million and outspent them in $7 million in campaign advertising. However surprised Emanuel voters may have been, Garcia, 58, knew a run-off would be possible. Within three weeks of officially announcing his candidacy, Garcia garnered 63,000 petitions and earned the support of Chicago Teacher s Union President Karen Lewis. Garcia, a former state senator and alderman, thanked his supporters on Tuesday night at Alhambra Palace and promised he would work just as hard in the next weeks to convince voters he is better suited to take on the mayoral position. Garcia went on to state, This city needs a mayor who will listen to people, the people who get up every day, work hard, pay their bills, and want nothing more than a good job, a safe neighborhood for their family and a good school for their kids. You are the people who really make this city work. After acknowledgements, Garcia concluded his speech promising change.
