Havng learned the mllng trade, he found employment as a mller for sx years here before he began farmng on a tract of one hundred acres of land, whch he purchased near New Kngston, and whch s now owned by hs son Oscar. The custom of the early day was to gather the ashes from the burned log heaps and sell them at these asheres, of whch there were several, where they were made nto potash and pearlash for the market.
