Tibbits Booster Board AUG 2016 Tibbits Booster Newsletter Congratulations to Nancy Sprow, July Volunteer of the Month! Nancy has been a volunteer for Tibbits for approximately 20 years! She is a valuable usher and tour guide. Nancy has been on several tours herself and believes that having a good tour guide is important to keep the group interested. Nancy used to live in Hillsdale County, where she raised her family. She moved to Coldwater after her husband passed. Another Tibbits volunteer suggested she start to volunteer for Tibbits and she has been here since. Nancy is retired from Southern Michigan Bank & Trust and has in the past lent her financial expertise to the Booster Board as Treasurer. She enjoys history and believes we should continue to preserve it, such as having a building like Tibbits to enjoy for many more years to come! She is an active member of Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) and also volunteers at the Burnside Center. One of Nancy s hobbies is walking and you can often find her walking around Coldwater. She also has become interested in genealogy; ATTENTION ALL TIBBITS VOLUNTEERS, FOUNDATION BOARD & STAFF S A V E T H E D A T E MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 19 is the Annual Booster s Board meeting. Cheers to 10 Years!! Boosters Celebrate 10 Years! Volunteers enjoyed an Ice Cream social celebrating 10 years of the Tibbits Boosters, formed in June, 2006. Even though the evening was hot, the ice cream was cold. Each volunteer made their own sundae choosing from many toppings. Staff, cast and crew made appearances. Charter members were honored. Memories were shared through visiting with friends, the Booster scrapbooks, and programs which included Booster Charter Members Marv & Betty Malovey, Diane Riegel, Shirley Easterday, & Marisue Taylor (Above) enjoy the Boosters Annual Ice Cream Social with other volunteers at the 2016 event.

Meet Joan Waterbury Member-at -Large Booster Board Member Joan, although a very active member, has only been a Booster for three years, and a Booster Board member for two years. She became involved with the Tibbits through her close friend, Darene. Since joining the Boosters, Joan volunteers weekly for office work, putting a lot of hours in with the cross-over to our new system two years ago, ushers during the Entertainment Series and Summer Theatre, and has worked at various booths for the Boosters. Currently, Joan serves on the board as Member at Large, and heads up the Bulk Mailing/Program committee. We are sure that many of you have received calls from her asking for your assistance in folding programs for our Entertainment series and Popcorn Theatre. Joan also assists in getting all of the articles collected for our monthly newsletter, and keeping us on schedule to send them in a timely matter. Joan was born and raised in Coldwater, you may remember her as Joan Gochenour, and together with her late husband, Emery, raised their two sons, Mike and Eric. She is also the proud grandmother of three grandchildren. Joan retired a few years ago from Angola Personnel, where she worked for over 15 years doing the accounting. She still works part time doing accounting, and helps with the books for the Eastern Star organization. Joan loves to read and crochet, and is an active member of the Eastern Star and the Early Bird book Club in Quincy. When asked why she likes volunteering at the Tibbits, she says, Volunteering at the Tibbits allows me to be involved with the community, and make many new acquaintances. Thank you, Joan, for all you do to help the Boosters and the Tibbits. Volunteers Needed Smith Memorial Concert Measure for Measure : Featuring the Men s Glee Club of the University of Michigan. Tibbits Tidbits When Tibbits was founded in 1882 what else was happening and what did the world look like? Chester A. Arthur, the one with the extravagant whiskers, was President. He had become President in 1881 after the assassination of President Garfield and served for one term. As it was the height of the Victorian Age the ladies were wearing bustles, corsets, and ruffles. The men would come to the theatre in wing collars, frock coats and top hats. I bet it was quite a grand sight to see the citizens of Coldwater descend from their carriages and enter the theatre on opening nights. Also in 1882 P.T. Barnum bought his most famous Elephant, Jumbo. The US Senate ratified the treaty establishing the Red Cross. The outlaw Jesse James was killed in St. Joseph, MO. On Aug. 8 there was snow falling on Lake Michigan. Tchaikovsky s 1812 Overture opened in Moscow. The first string of Christmas tree lights was created by Thomas Edison. However, it was still gas-lights in the White House, as well as
