Adip Intensive Programme Future Cities: Demographic Change and Local Differentiation The impact of architecture as physical artifact on the urban development ----------------- ARCHITECTURE DESIGN INNOVATION PROGRAM GUEST PROFESSOR BOSTJAN VUGA with BIRGIT KLAUCK BOSTJAN VUGA // BIRGIT KLAUCK // DAVID RUIC // JASPER UGRINSKY // NN
ERASMUS offers a short time measure to promote the professional and intercultural competence of students and staff - this is in addition to promoting individual mobility. What is an Intensive Programme (IP )? IP is a compact program of study of two weeks duration, e.g. in the form of a block seminar. The project coordinator cooperates with at least two other ERASMUS partner universities from two different countries.

ADIP - Within the context of the IP we will investigate the potential of architectural interventions as catalyst for future urban transformation and renewal. The focus is on the specific needs of cities without growth - the city of Venice is our case study. By doing so, we will investigate the impact and influence of architecture, as physical artifacts, on the urban structure. Using the method research by design we will develop and test possible instruments in varying scales.

Adip VENICE TODAY s CHALLENGES
Venice: Acqua alta Venice has been completely submersed, a pool in San Marco. On Sunday, Venice has witnessed a record tide, the so called "acqua alta": initially forecasted as 120 centimetres, it reached 149 centimetres and the town has been completely submersed by water.... This exceptional tide has been classified as the sixth ever in the history of " acqua alta. VENICE - GLOBAL WARMING
Venice: Congestion and Stagnation... VENICE - URBAN MOBILITY
Venice: Postcard Image... Venice, the place of longing at the junction of three migration corridors, emerges as a front-line European city and an exemplary prototype of the increasingly globalized city in which a decimated inner-city population meets armies of tourists and a parallel economy supported by illegal immigrants. VENICE - DEPOPULATION
Venice: The Tourist Maze From a peak of 171,000 residents in 1951,the population of the historic center of Venice has fallen to fewer than 62,000 today. Should the trend continue by 2030 authentic Venetians could become extinct and the historic center reduced to a shell subsisting only on tourism. According to recent estimates, 15 million to 18 million tourists have come to Venice over the last year. On some days they easily outnumber residents; during the pre-lenten Carnival there are 150,000 tourists a day. However depopulation of city centers is a problem in many places around Europe.
