RESIDENCE PERSONNEL The Security Office is located just inside and to the right of the main entrance of the residence. The Office of the Residence Life Coordinator is located in Room 115, Grand River Hall. Residence Life Coordinator The Residence Life Coordinator oversees all aspects of residence life for students living in Grand River Hall and Family Residence. Striving to maintain a positive residence community which will support and encourage academic success and personal growth, the Residence Life Coordinator provides guidance and assistance to students in resolving issues and addressing student needs. The Residence Life Coordinator provides training and oversight to the Resident Assistants and encourages teamwork to create a living environment that maximizes quality of life and fosters student development. Resident Assistants (RA s) In addition to the Residence Life Coordinator there are also Student Resident Assistants. These positions will be given to individuals who are registered students in good standing at the College and who live in residence. They are responsible for providing leadership to fellow students, and for helping students to adjust to residence life. They assist in organizing academic, social and recreational activities for residents. RAs are provided training opportunities and are equipped to help residents build a thriving community where all residents are respected and included. Security Officers Security Officers help keep the residence community safe. They conduct regular security checks and enforce College regulations related to health and safety. Security Officers respond to emergency and after-hours calls and refer students to appropriate professionals and resources as needed. Residence Council The purpose of the Residence Council is to motivate residents to participate fully in the life of Grand River Hall and Family Residence. As innovative, visionary leaders, members of the Council develop events and activities that respond to the interests and needs of the residence community. The executive usually consist of a Chairperson, Vice-Chairperson, Secretary and Sports Representative. Their duties include event planning, canteen services and oversight of recycling initiatives. All residents are encouraged to join the Residence Council. To join the Residence Council, you must: Be passionate and enthusiastic about student involvement within residence Be willing to voice the ideas and concerns of the residents in your building / wing / floor Be willing to attend meetings of the Council Engage with community members to encourage their participation in residence life REGISTRATION PROCEDURES Applications Students requiring accommodations must apply by completing a Residence application form and submitting the $25 application fee (at the same time).

The application must be mailed to the following address or dropped off at the Happy Valley-Goose Bay Campus. Mailing Address: College of the North Atlantic PO Box 1720, Stn B 219 Hamilton River Road Happy Valley-Goose Bay, NL A0P 1E0 Students should note that residence space is limited; therefore the College cannot guarantee a room to everyone who applies. Students should apply to residence as soon as they are accepted into a program as rooms will be filled on a first come, first served basis. Before moving into Grand River Hall, students must pay a $50 (non-refundable) confirmation fee. Students moving into Family Residence must pay a $100 confirmation fee. Payment of Fees Residence fees must be paid two weeks in advance on a continuous basis up to and including the last scheduled day of classes/exams or on-the-job-training as indicated in the College Calendar. Students receiving Government Student Aid may be permitted waivers of these requirements, provided they agree to sign over to the College the appropriate portion of their student aid. Residence Check-Out If students wish to move out of residence during the academic year, they must notify the Residence Life Coordinator. Rent is charged on a full semester basis. Students are required to return room keys and key cards and leave residence within 48 hours after their program has been completed. Check In Time Residence will open for students two days before the fall semester registration / start date. The first meal will take place the Sunday evening prior to registration. Anyone arriving prior to this date must make arrangements with the Residence Life Coordinator. Room Assignments The Residence Life Coordinator will make all room and apartment assignments. In Grand River Hall, single rooms are reserved for RA s. A limited number of single and wheelchair accessible rooms are available for students. All other rooms are capable of double occupancy but may not be used to capacity. Students assigned to a double room may be required to share the room with a roommate at any time during the year. Room Key You will be issued one key for your room. In the event that you lose or misplace your key, a loner key may be requested from the Residence Life Coordinator. This key must be returned within 7 days or the key will be considered lost and you will be charged $40 to your student account to cover the cost of rekeying the lock.

The Family Residence, located next to Grand River Hall, features 4 apartments that may be configured into one, two, or three-bedroom units. A child daycare center is connected to the Family Residence. Grand River Hall In Grand River Hall, each occupant of a room is provided with a bed, stationary desk, bookshelves, chair, closet space, and a shared sink. Rooms and Meal Plans Single or double occupancy rooms are available at Grand River Hall. Room assignments are for the semester and cannot be altered until the next semester. A meal plan is required of all students in Grand River Hall. The meal plan consists of 14 meals, Monday to Sunday. A continental breakfast is also available free of charge from Monday to Friday. Meal plan prices and room rates are subject to change. There are rooms in Grand River Hall equipped to meet the needs of mobility-impaired students. These rooms are located on the first floor. Students interested in these accommodations should specify such on their application form, and are encouraged to visit the College to determine if the accommodations are suitable to their needs. Family Residence Each apartment in the Family Residence is equipped with a kitchen, living room, bathroom, and closet space. One, two, and three-bedroom units are available. Each apartment contains basic furnishings including table, chairs, sofa, beds, and a closet organizer/clothing storage unit. Students living in the Family Residence must provide their own linens and kitchen utensils. Any additional furniture required is the responsibility of the student. Meal plans for the College Cafeteria are not available to students living in Family Residence.

COMMON AREAS Downstairs Lounge The downstairs lounge is available to all residents and their guests and is equipped with leather couches, a flat screen TV with cable, DVD player, pool table, ping pong table & foosball table. Kitchen The kitchen is located on the first floor and is equipped with a refrigerator, range, freezer and a microwave. Please refrain from cooking meals with fish and nut ingredients. Upstairs Lounge The upstairs lounge is available to all residents and their guests and is equipped with gym equipment, a flat screen TV and cable, and a DVD player. Study Room The Study Room is located on the first floor and is equipped with three computer workstations featuring internet connectivity. A great space for small-group meetings and tutoring sessions, the Study Room also contains tables, chairs, and a storage closet. Resident Assistant Resource room The RA Resource Room is located in Room 120 and serves as a meeting space for Resident Assistants as well as Council Chambers for the Residence Council. The space features storage shelves as well as tables and chairs setup in a board room configuration. Laundry Room The laundry room is located on the first floor and is equipped with washers and dryers that the residents may use free of charge. NOTICE: WASHING MACHINES USE HIGH EFFICIENCY (HE) DETERGENT ONLY. SERVICES Food Services A cafeteria is located in the main building of the campus which provides daily lunch and dinner. Continental breakfast is also available Monday through Friday. Custodial Services During regular working hours the Residence has a custodian who will clean washrooms, halls and common areas Responsibilities for Individual Rooms When a student signs into a room, he/she assumes full responsibility for the room and its contents and for all activities. General cleaning and tidiness of the bedroom is the responsibility of the occupants. Rooms may be inspected at random. No goods, garbage, paper, sweeping or other refuse shall be thrown out of the windows, swept or thrown from the rooms into the hallways, public areas, stairways or grounds. Students are responsible to remove their garbage and place in the appropriate containers.

Disciplinary action may result from an unsatisfactory report received by the Residence Staff. Firearms and ammunition are forbidden in residence. Cooking appliances are prohibited in the residence bedrooms. When a student checks-out of residence, a thorough room check will be completed. All refuse must be removed from the room and all effort should be made to leave the room in the same condition as when you moved in. A cleaning fee will be charged to your student account if the room was left in an unsatisfactory condition. The cost of damages beyond those of normal wear and tear will be reported to the Campus Office and the cost added to the students account at the College. When leaving your room for any extended period, make sure that the heat is turned down, the lights are turned off and the window is closed and locked. Turn off alarm clocks while out of the residence for an extended period of time (i.e. weekends and holidays). Coveralls and work boots are not permitted to be worn in the residence lobby or rooms. These items should be stored in the student lockers in the College. Parking Parking is available in front of the residence building. Designated parking for residence staff is marked. Internet Free wireless Internet is available to all students in Grand River Hall who have their own computers. Students living in Family Residence are required to secure their own internet connection. REMEMBER: INTERNET SERVICE IS FOR SCHOOL AND COMMUNICATION USE ONLY. DOWNLOADING OF MUSIC, MOVIES, ETC. WILL REDUCE THE SPEED OF SERVICE FOR ALL USERS.

Mail Service Mail is delivered to the Campus office of the College. Mail is picked up and delivered to students daily (Monday to Friday). Students must inform their correspondents of their change of address prior to leaving the residence. You may also email your work order to steven.rogers@cna.nl.ca Laundry Room In the case of a broken washer or dryer, an out-of-order sign must be placed on the broken unit and residence staff should be notified of the problem as soon as possible. Telephones/Cable Pay telephones are located on each floor of Grand River Hall and student bedrooms are equipped with telephone and cable access (student cost). There is a courtesy phone available in Grand River Hall where students can make calls free of charge. For phone hookup and costs students can contact Bell Aliant at 1-888-214-7896. For cable hookup and costs, students can contact Eastlink Communications at 1-888-345-1111. Students living in Family Residence must secure phone and/or cable connection at their own cost. Bedding Students are responsible for providing their own bed linens and pillows. Allergies/Sensitivities Due to allergies/sensitivities to scents there is to be: 1. No strong perfume, spray, candles or scents used in any area of the residence 2. No peanuts or peanut products consumed or prepared in residence 3. No fish or fish products consumed or prepared in residence Burning of candles (scented or nonscented) is strictly prohibited. CODE OF CONDUCT Co-operation and Consideration The key to successful residence living is in the co-operation with and consideration of one s neighbors.

Quiet Hours In addition to regular study and quiet hours, one floor of the residence may be designated quiet for extended periods of time. The objective of this quiet floor is to provide an atmosphere which encourages academic achievement to students who are serious about their studies. Examples of unacceptable behavior include the following: The use of stereo equipment (ie; amps) TV s and radios at a volume that can be heard outside the room Room doors being left open while there is noise being made in the room Congregating in the common areas Any noise that interrupts other students studying Excessive noise will not be tolerated. The volume of equipment such as amplifiers, televisions, stereos and radios, as well as voice levels must not inconvenience other students in residence. Study hours will be from 8pm to 10pm Sunday to Thursday Quiet hours will be from 10pm to 7:30am Sunday to Thursday and from 12am to 12 noon Friday and Saturday All hours other than study hours and quiet times are considered to be relaxation time for residence students. Students should have respect and consideration for others who may be studying. Mature, considerate behavior is expected of all residence students at all times. Students who do not respect the "Study Hours and/or the Quiet Hours guidelines will be subject to disciplinary action. Security Students will be given a room key and a front entrance key card/code which gives you access to the building when the doors are locked. These need to be returned at the end of the semester and when moving out. The College does not assume responsibility for any personal property in students rooms. The College reserves the right to enter a student s room to ensure the occupancy agreement and rules and regulations are not being violated. College staff may also enter rooms to conduct cleaning inspections during the semester, and room condition inspections at check-in or check-out. College staff may also enter rooms for inspection/maintenance related to occupational health and safety. Absence from Residence Students are encouraged to leave information with the Security Office and/or residence staff as to their whereabouts when they are away from campus overnight or for an extended period of time. College Regulations Students are responsible for reading the information in the Occupancy Agreement, Residence Regulations, and College Policies. Courtesy Rule : Upon having a guest in their room, each resident must ensure that their guest does not, in any way, inconvenience their roommate (if applicable). Hence, every resident is responsible for ensuring that their rights as a resident are not neglected or ignored by their roommate or any other

resident and/or guest in the residence. If such circumstances arise, the roommate should submit a complaint to the appropriate college residence staff. Residence rules are applicable to all visitors/guests. Residents are responsible for the conduct of their visitors/guests. If a visitor/guest violates these rules, the host/hostess will be held accountable. Residents are prohibited from giving their keys, door codes, or key cards to their visitors/guests. Visitors/guests must stay in the room that the resident has been assigned and must be accompanied by their host/hostess to such common areas as the upstairs and downstairs lounges, the kitchen, and the laundry room. All visitors must be 18 years of age or older. Room Vacancies The college reserves the right to reassign individuals to different rooms to meet operational requirements. Fire Regulations Tampering with life safety equipment (i.e. fire extinguishers, fire alarms, etc.) is a criminal offence (Section 437 of the Criminal Code). Using an emergency fire exit for purposes other than evacuation is prohibited. Occupants are responsible for becoming acquainted with fire regulations and evacuation procedures. Residents are encouraged to be on-site and to participate in fire drills that occur in residence. RESIDENCE DISCIPLINARY PROCEDURES In order to maintain students safety, comfort and welfare as well as the best interest of the College, and in order to deal with students fairly, consistently and expediently the following Disciplinary Procedures will apply. Disciplinary Procedures All students in residence must abide by the rules and regulations established and published. Security Officers, Resident Assistants, and the Residence Life Coordinator shall be empowered by the College to report breaches of regulations by completing an Incident Report Form and issuing a fine. Breaches of the Residence Regulations, Occupancy Agreement, or Code of Conduct may result in other disciplinary procedures including eviction from residence.
