Archivists and recrds managers ften find themselves acting in a managerial capacity, due t the small staff size in many institutins. Even in larger rganizatins, thugh, archivists and recrds managers need t understand the institutinal structure and culture f their emplyers. The seminar als prvides pprtunity t explre further sme imprtant theretical and practical issues in archives and recrds management. 2 Open Frum: Part f mst class meetings will be set aside fr an Open Frum t discuss issues selected by class members. The frum tpic fr the first class sessin will be devted t individual reprts abut yur internship experiences. During the remainder f the curse, yu will be asked t draw n these experiences in relating management thery t specific institutinal settings. Each student will cnvene ne f the Open Frums, chsing the tpic, suggesting apprpriate (brief) readings, and leading the discussin. Tpic prpsals must be submitted by Octber 5, and readings must be listed and available at least ne week befre yur scheduled date fr the frum. Bk Review: A critical review f ne imprtant bk dealing with a significant issue relating t histry, memry, and recrdkeeping is due Nvember 8. The review shuld summarize and critically examine the bk s implicatins fr archivists and recrds managers. See class schedule fr suggested bks. Written reprts shuld be 4-5 pages, and shuld be distributed t all class members by email r in hard cpy. Research Paper: Yur majr writing assignment is an riginal analytical research paper, n a tpic suitable fr a pssible master s thesis. This will be an pprtunity t explre in depth a significant issue that yu might cnsider fr yur thesis. The paper shuld examine a significant issue in archives and/r recrds management. The paper shuld be 15-20 pages, with a substantial bibligraphy. A research prspectus, including a preliminary bibligraphy, is due Nvember 15. The research paper is due during the week f December 6-10, when we will meet t present ral reprts n yur papers. Grading: Yur grade fr the curse will be calculated as fllws: Bk review and reprt, 25 %; Open frum presentatin, 15 %; Research paper, 35%; Class discussin participatin, 25%.
