Stancil Record Page 10 Willard Grover and Ruby Irene Stancil Creech Ruby is the youngest daughter of James Oscar Stancil and his second wife, Mamie Hocutt. Older brothers were James Jim Orville and Henry Doc Rudolph. Oscar s first wife, Allie Edwards, mother of Guy, Gurnie and Ruth died of T.B. Oscar met Mamie, a tall, pretty and smart teacher with black hair and blue eyes, in the Micro General Store, Johnston County, N.C. They quickly fell in love. Ruby was born at home on Dec. 17, 1926, in Grandpa Henry Stancil s tenant house. Ruby grew up attending Antioch Missionary Baptist Church, Middlesex, N.C. Ruby met her future husband, Willard Grover Creech, son of Joseph H. and Zilpha Creech, in first grade and both from Glendale High School in 1944. Ruby entered Hardbarger s Business School in Raleigh. Grover enlisted in the Army and was sent to Germany. The war ended. Grover entered the School of Pharmacy at UNC-Chapel Hill. Ruby and Grover were in love and ready for marriage. Ruby handwrote wedding invitations. They married March 27, 1948, in the Antioch Baptist Church. Her mother made Ruby s satin gown with covered buttons. Recently, Lou Stancil, wife of Donell, returned an invitation sent to Esther Peedin Stancil. Grover continued his studies. Ruby was hired by the Dean of Dentistry s Office. Ruby organized the Pharmacy Student Wives Auxiliary at UNC and was its first president. Following Grover s graduation in 1954, they returned to Johnston County. Grover and brother Joe, also a pharmacist, owned Creech Drug Company in Selma. Grover was a founder of the Johnston County Pharmacy Organization and first president. During this time, Grover became Ruby Irene Stancil Creech with Grover more involved in the community. He joined the Kiwanis Club, served in many leadership positions including board of directors. He s a life member of the Greater Smithfield-Selma Area Chamber of Commerce, served as President and headed up many committees. Grover received the Community Pharmacy Award, for a life time of service. In 1967, they moved to Smithfield where Grover was co-owner of the Medical Center Pharmacy. Later he founded a construction company, J & C Homes. Ruby served as bookkeeper, interior designer and landscaper. Her natural flair for art and design opened doors as Ruby s skills were in demand. Ruby served as president of the Woman s Auxiliary of the North Carolina Pharmaceutical Association, and now as an advisor. Ruby, an excellent speaker, has spoken at many meetings. Topics included, Happiness is Helping and The Role of the Pharmacist s Wife in the Community. Locally Ruby was active in the Smithfield Garden Club, P.T.A., Cub Scout Den Mother, received the Distinguished Service and President s Awards, American Cancer Society. She and Grover worked for years on the Glendale High School reunion committee. The North Carolina Museum of History wanted a Health and Healing Exhibit, Ruby volunteered for the Pharmacy Committee, charged with creating the 1920s-era drug store. Ruby on her wedding day. Ruby s expertise was called on again for the 100th anniversary of the N.C. Pharmaceutical Association. She helped design and quilt the large wall hanging at UNC s Institute of Pharmacy. Ruby s an accomplished artist, won prizes at fairs. Her paintings include portraits, still-lifes and flowers. Ruby embraces skills her mother taught including quilting, sewing, crocheting and added new ones; upholstery, refinishing furniture and millinery. On Aug. 28, 2002, Grover and Ruby Creech received the prestigious M. Fearing Award for lifelong community pharmacy service from The Campbell University School of Pharmacy. This recognizes outstanding pharmacists for their patient dedication, community engagement and professional involvement. Grover and Ruby were first couple to receive this honor. Ruby and Grover are members of the Sharon Baptist Church, Smithfield, N.C. Grover has served on the board of trustees, Ruby was church historian and both have served in leadership positions. Ruby and Grover were blessed with four children: Philip Haywood, Marcia Ann, Byron Grover and Lucia Michele. Grover relaxes by playing golf. Over the years he achieved his ultimate dream, and three of golf s hardest feats, he made three holes in one! Ruby and Grover s life has reflected their philosophy, We are happiest when we are helping others.

Alice, 90 years old, is the granddaughter of Tempy Ann, and the daughter of Ronia Hill and Stephen Stancil. She grew up on a farm and started dipping snuff when young. Alice liked to play the piano. Alice, a long time member of Bethany Missionary Baptist Church, lives alone and enjoys her flowers. She has vivid memories of Tempy Ann s brothers and reunions at the home of George Ira and Eva Stancil. George told Ronia with a smile that he knew she would be there even if no one else came. Alice s life started out with difficulty most can only imagine. She was a very responsible child and when her grandma, Lina Stancil, was very ill and could not be left alone, Ronia selected Alice to care for her, even though she was only 5 years old. Alice looked longingly as her siblings went to school. Alice was 15 by the time Lina died. Alice is truly self-educated. Tempy Ann Alice Stancil Price Four generations: Brent Price, Sammy Price, Samuel Luke Price and Alice Stancil Price. One of Alice s special memories was in 1933. She and Ronia had dinner with Aunt Minnie Stancil, Uncle Josiah Stancil s wife, shortly before she visited sons Harry, Herbert and Bill in California. Minnie left on April 18, 1933. Ronia asked, How can you get on that plane, Minnie? Minnie replied, Because I have something in California I love! They also visited Glenn and Mozelle Stancil Campbell s home. Mozelle transformed the interior with ingenuity and creativity, it was beautiful. In 1940 Alice met Jimmie Robert Price. He was raised by Milton Price, brother of Fletcher Price Volume 8 Page 11 who married Alice s sister, Ora. Jimmie enlisted in the Army. He guarded prisoners in Wisconsin. Jimmie and Alice were in Smithfield attending the Annual Farmers Day celebration and dance when it was announced the war was over. Alice and Jimmie married on Dec. 31, 1945, in Dillon, S.C. Alice wore a blue suit, black blouse, blue hat, with a black bag and shoes. After the war, Jimmie farmed and then was hired to drive a truck for Swift and Company. Alice worked in a Wendell garment factory. Over the years Alice and Jimmie vacationed at the North Carolina shore, visited museums and attended air shows. Alice became a widow at only 76. She and Jimmie had two sons Sammy Samuel Jay Price and Dudly Douglas Henry Price. Alice is proud of her heritage and the memories that tie her to the Stancil family. Mason Alexander Williams, son of Tim and Beth Godwin Williams, became a Certified Junior Open Water Diver on July 2, 2013. He lives on St. Croix in the Virgin Islands. Carson Rose Williams, daughter of Rose and Johnny Williams, was voted volleyball player of the year in a vote of area coaches and the Jacksonville (N.C.) Daily News sports staff. She attended the invitation-only volleyball camp at Campbell University, Buies Creek, N.C. She is the granddaughter of Hilbert and Margaret Mercer Williams. Hanover is a boarding and training facility for English, western, hunter-jumpers 20 minutes north Wilmington, N.C. They are the grandchildren of Shirley and Reuben Mercer. (Beulah) Rodney Stancil, son of Joan and the late Cecil Stancil, is one of the coaches for the North Johnston High School hunter safety team. The team placed first at the regional competition at Rosehill Farms Plantation in Nashville, N.C. Rodney is the husband of Candace. (Glenn) The families of Barbara Stancil West and Judy Stancil Phillips, Vernard and Magdalene Stancil s children, enjoy many weekends together at the beach house on Topsail Island, N.C. They share stories of Vernard Pops and Magdalene MaMa along with the family traditional foods such as fried chicken, potato salad, blueberry pie, homemade strawberry jam, MaMa s famous Belgian waffles, corn, cucumbers, tomatoes, fried shrimp and fish. They cherish all of the family gatherings at Topsail Island. In memory of Magdalene and Vernard Stancil Their lives were an example we all strive to follow. Their loving family hope floats fundraiser Rodney Warren Stancil and son Garrett, son and grandson of Joan Woodard Stancil and the late Cecil, participated in second annual Hope Floats, a North Carolina fundraiser for the American Cancer Society. They spent seven days traveling in kayaks 200 miles down the Neuse River, from Raleigh to New Bern. This is our first year doing it, and we re doing it in memory of him and in honor of some family members, Rodney Stancil said. We re just trying to raise money for research so we can help somebody. Cecil died in 2007.
