The Scottish Society of Architect Artists was founded in 1987 by a group of architects and students interested in the wider visual arts beyond architecture drawing, painting, sculpture, photography, print-making and even experimental art. The Society is a registered charity, and while remaining entirely independent, it is an associated society of the Royal Incorporation of Architects in Scotland. Introduction by Ian Stuart Campbell, HonFRIAS Throughout history, architects were artists - and artists often became architects. Both recorded details of contemporary society and effectively were curators of cultural history. Both disciplines traditionally share ambitions to create and communicate ideas. Both appreciate and in parallel have developed visual, mental and manual skills. Such strong links between art and architecture have given rise to active groups of architect artists throughout Europe. In 1935 Ligne and Couleur was established in France. This organisation grew out of an even earlier [1881] arts and crafts group who had exhibited under an ambiguous name lovers of nature. They produced regular exhibitions in Paris until 1914 when the first world war put an end to such activities. Reconstituted as ligne et couleur they held their next exhibition in 1936 at the Galerie Charpentier in Paris. Again war disrupted their annual programme until 1946 when their ninth exhibition was held in Galerie Fontan, 137 Boulevard Saint Germain, Paris. This event reportedly marked a significant increase in enthusiasm, numbers and quality of exhibitors. In 1958 a sister society formed in Germany, and since then others have evolved in Hungary, Poland, Italy, and Romania. In 1987 the newest group was established in Scotland. Since then, The Scottish Society of Architect Artists, [SSAA], has successfully fulfilled its declared aims and objectives: i) encourage architects to develop their skills in painting, sculpture, and related arts and crafts and ii) to provide opportunities to exhibit and sell their work. Each year the SSAA Call for Entries receives a positive response. More than 100 works including, seventeen from European societies were exhibited in June 2011 at the Maclaurin Gallery in Ayr. A healthy variety of subject matter included: portraits to landscapes; urban to rural; vernacular to modern; nautical to botanical; and perhaps less usual for architects, - still life and life drawings. The SSAA has also created opportunies to discuss and develop artistic skills with regular paint and Pint days which have proved sociable, accessible and popular. A number of life classes have been organised in conjunction with the Leith School of Art. SSAA has become a regular and valued participant in European Expositions in France, Italy, Germany and Poland. In return European Architects now regularly submit work to the SSAA annual exhibitions. This reciprocity between Scotland in Europe, widens our cultural horizons and exposes Scots architect artists to some quite playful and flamboyant influences. Architects are sometimes accused of being reluctant to let their hair down, yet if art can bring a smile to our faces, it must surely be worthwhile? Membership of the Society is open to architects and students, and to persons involved in architectural practice in Scotland, past and present. A recent Rule change allows expatriots to become members of the Society. WINTER EXHIBITION PRIVATE VIEW Joyce B Deans Room, 15 Rutland Square. The well attended opening of SSAA Winter Show took place in Edinburgh on Tuesday evening, 22nd November 2011. Following two years of heavy snow in December it was agreed that the SSAA Winter Show should be extended into November this year. This required an earlier Receiving Day and in consequence some exhibitors were unable to provide JPGs of their works in time for inclusion in this e-catalogue. As a result some works have been omitted and others photographed in situ giving, in some cases, unfortunate reflections from glass and slight distortion. The works featured here are not comprehensive but the selection is intended to give a flavour of the variety of subjects and techniques on show. The exhibition will remain open until 21st December 2011.
